A who’s who of technology and telecommunications companies announced Wednesday that it intended to build the first of a new generation of nationwide wireless data networks.
The consortium includes a disparate group of partners: Sprint Nextel, Google, Intel, Comcast, Time Warner and Clearwire.
The partners have put the value of the deal at $14.5 billion, a figure that includes radio spectrum and equipment provided by Sprint Nextel and Clearwire, and $3.2 billion from the others involved.
They expect the network, which will provide the next generation of high-speed Internet access for cellphone users, to be built in as little as two years, but there is no timetable on when it will be available to users and the price is not determined. The partners are seeking to beat Verizon Wireless and AT&T Wireless to the market.
There’s a lot of money changing hands; but, no guarantee that anything more than paper-pushing will result.
I only wish. We have fair-to-middling cable broadband, right now; but, competition from Wi-Max might push Mr. Comcast away from slopping at the monopoly trough in my neck of the prairie.
I’m curious, if Walmart rolled out WiMax at all of their stores, for about $15 a month, would you guys still be whining about the high cost of low prices?
Unless it’s a better value (significantly cheaper, or faster for the same price) what I can get now, I don’t see why I would be interested.
I’d rather use dial-up than buy broadband or for that matter anything from Walmart.
There is a point where one has to make a stand at the expense of cheap.

I don’t give a rat’s ass about WiMax but I certainly do appreciate those booth babes!
You may not give a rat’s ass about WiMax but I can guarantee you’ll be using it before long. The girl in the middle, I’d make soup our of her dirty underwear.
It will become available about the same time as GM’s electric car.

At the moment, I have a black bear in my backyard and the nearest city is three and a half hours to the east or three and a half hours to the west.
I could be wrong but I doubt if I’ll see WiMax here anytime soon. We just got high speed. 🙂
I like all the ladies in the picture but I find the two on the right to be particularly fetching, particularly the far right. I was breast fed, hence I don’t require large udders attached to a female.
I hadn’t quite realized (#6) there were those commenting here who contributed to the first edition of Psychopathia Sexualis.
DAMN! Must be really cold in that room, check out the girl on the right and the one on the left.
I have friends and family who work at Ericsson, so I’m not impartial, however WIMAX is crap.

Doesn’t seem very happy.
#8 – At the moment, I have a black bear in my backyard…
WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY SO!
Christ, we need to mount a rescue operation right now! How did you manage to get yourself trapped out there in killer bear country? Can you build a fire? Maybe the helicopter can see the smoke. I hope we have enough fuel!
It always amazes me at the talk of WiMax
When projects are announced with a fanfare – when they are finally up and running its always about 3 times the initial cost that was touted
On top of that you never really hear of anyone talking of the great levels of service quality
If internet speeds were that good you would hear people in blogs and forums saying that Wi Max is the best thing since sliced bread and should be available everywhere
You would be better off with erratic hotel wi fi than most WiMax speeds and service levels
#8 – If my mother looked like the one in the middle I would have breast fed until I was 21.
Be nice to the bears!
I didn’t realize silicon and peroxide were WiMax signal enhancers. Maybe it’s the empty space between their ears that cause the signal to get stronger due to echo…..
I live in Vegas, tomorrow those girls will be standing in front of a booth selling Rap records and then back to their jobs at the strip club on the weekend.
the girl on the left and the one in the middle seam to be natural beauties… the one on the right is a faker.
They sure are dressed rather glamorously for booth babes.
…what’s wi-max?

Hey… …OFTLO… …leave those bears alone!
They are neighbors, after all. Be gracious, be hospitable but don’t feed them. Don’t scare them unnecessarily. Never try to kiss them on the lips!
By the way, fires are strictly verboten, helicopters make way too much noise for my peace of mind and you could run a small country for a week with the fuel costs for one slick for one day.

As long as the bruins are nice to me…
🙂
WiMax – Not More Bars, but More BOOBS !!! At least SIX of them !!! Let’s have more Boot Babes !!!
I’ll believe it when I see it. I am not sure if any other country is looking at this technology except for the USA. Do we actually need this technology?
#1 – I pay 15€ a month for 20 mb downstream in Italy. I pay nearly $70 for 20 mb downstream here in the States.
