Fossett, 63, took off Sept. 3 from Barron Hilton’s Flying M Ranch, south of Yerington, in a small plane on what was supposed to be a short pleasure flight. During a monthlong search, ground crews, the Nevada National Guard and the Civil Air Patrol scoured a 20,000 square-mile area, but turned up no sign of Fossett or his plane. Hilton, the hotel magnate, later voluntarily sent the state a check $200,000 to cover some of the search costs. Fossett was declared legally dead Feb. 15 by an Illinois judge.
Billing someone for the costs of a search is unusual. On Tuesday, before Kieckhefer revealed the governor’s plans, state Emergency Management Director Frank Siracusa said state and local government search and rescue workers have a long-standing tradition of not charging when they hunt for missing persons, even for multimillionaires such as Steve Fossett. “We do not charge the rich or the poor,” Siracusa said. “There is no precedent where government will go after people for costs just because they have money to pay for it. You get lost, and we look for you. It is a service your taxpayer dollars pay for.”
If they start charging for rescue operations, is your ability to pay going to affect the quality of service? Negligence and stupidity is one thing, but where do you draw the line?
Seems to me “the law” should be clear and express on the ability to charge for search and rescue? If so, follow the law.
No “requests” otherwise. No such thing from “the State.”
In normal operation, the search and rescue funds are one of those wealth transfers from the poor to the rich. Everyone pays into it, the rich disproportionately benefit from it–happens all the time. Then you get Katrina, and millions are spent rescuing the poor. Probably a net benefit “ovrall” to the poor.

There’s plenty of class distinction. The problem with Marxism is, it is based on the idea that you cannot change your class. In the U.S. nothing says you can’t. Work hard, learn things, keep an eye on your future and you can do well here. Case in point, I grew up dirt poor. I’m not rich now, but I’m comfortable in my job as a professional geek, while my wife earns good money as a nurse (and she grew up with 1 pair of shoes from ages 12-17).
So all you Marxist believers out there==put your fingers in your ears and sing “oh poor me, oh poor me” as you customarily do to any reality of class distinction in the U.S. It’s that very “victim mentality” attitude that will ruin your children. Losers.

#29. I share your sigh, it seems that either the original reporter got this wrong, or the Governor caved because of the bad publicity…who knows? In any event saying Nevada is strapped for funds would seem bogus. I have no facts and since I am on the road, no time to research, but it would seem tax revenue from Vegas, Reno and all the Cat Houses, not to mention the Fed Gov, which owns most of the state, Military bases etc….and a very thin human population (have you ever driven HWY 50?), would imply different.
I could be wrong.
31 bobbo. I think people with the unfair advantage of being healthy with bourgeoisie winning personalities and good looks should be taxed and disfigured so that we can all truly be equal without the benefit of mere luck.
