An aide to Mexico’s president has lost his job after allegedly swiping BlackBerrys off a table outside of diplomatic talks taking place in New Orleans this week…
Rafael Quintero Curiel, who coordinated Mexican journalists who follow the president, was confronted Tuesday by Secret Service agents at the New Orleans airport and then by Mexican officials once he returned home…
Video surveillance cameras apparently caught Curiel taking the devices, which is how the Secret Service agents were able to track him down so quickly.
The White House said the BlackBerrys were recovered but declined further comment.
Maybe they were just souvenirs?
You would think that there would be a secure holding area for these Blackberrys since they probably contained sensitive information. A don’t expect the Mexican government to do anything of any substance as this guy was probably spying for them in the first place.
I heard that this happened in the White House. Sounded too bizzare then.
#1… the guy was fired.
It turns out that Fox News got it wrong and did report that this happened at the White House (Fox making stuff up?!?). So someone must have told me what they heard on Fox.
Anyhow.. the guy claims he gave them to his driver to take to the hotel. First, the SS can verify if he still had them on him when he was stopped the airport. If so, then they guy is lying.
If he really did “assume they were left behind”, and give the to a driver (cab driver) to give to a hotel, then the guy is an idiot. Somewhere along that convoluted chain of custody those devices are going to get stolen or lost.
If he truely cared about this, then he would have pointed out to the embassy staff that there were BB’s left, and let them take care of it.
The guy is thief. I wouldn’t buy his story if I were on a jury.
See this is why I don’t let my kids watch Dora
SWIPER, NO SWIPING!!!!!
#3 of course he got fired. He fucked up and didn’t make it out of the country with the devices and the Mexican government had to show that they had no involvement, which we know they did.
Maybe we just wanted some of that protection down south.
I’m imagining a device with a USB connection that closes the BB in a few minutes, maybe just the contents or a hidden app that forwards those emails… wouldn’t that be nifty, maybe it could also do this through it’s bluethooth.
The most likely explanation is that Rafael is both a thief and stupid (a stupid thief), any explanation that they gave trying to justify his actions is not credible.
If this guy gets some punishment for his action, it will be in USA courts; if they leave him in Mexico, he will get another job in the Mexican Government in a year, the proof is that in Mexican TV they tried to cover the information.
The Mexican Gvt is too lame and stupid to spy on the US, if this guy is their 007, well, nuf said.
