    Excellent vid!

  2. bobbo says:

Need more details. Where was the drone?

    Russia attacks Georgia–wtf?

    But yes, cool vid.

  3. pat says:

Great vid. Love how the Russians are saying it was some rebel group!

  4. pat says:

#2 – “Where was the drone?”

From the terrain I’d say over the Black Sea somewhere.

  5. DarthDemo says:

OK, let me get this straight: 1) The MIG is a Russian fighter aircraft. 2) Georgia does not possess them. 3) A MIG can shoot down an inexpensive, pilotless aircraft with a missile at a cost of USD $500K per missile. 4) Georgia must therefore attack Russia with many, many inexpensive UAVs for each one MIG that Russia possesses. 5) Russian economy returns to former Soviet glory.

  6. RBG says:

    It’s ok. It’s just a taking-Texas-from-Mexico sort of thing.

“Last week, Georgia accused Russia of trying to annex Abkhazia and South Ossetia by deciding to seek closer ties with them.

Russia has said its proposal is aimed at protecting the rights and legal interests of Russian citizens, who make up the majority of the population in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Russian and UN peacekeepers have been deployed in the two regions since the early 1990s, when violence broke out as they broke free from Georgian control.”

didn’t WW2 start in somewhat this way?

  8. bobbo says:

#6–RBG==sorry. Your reference better than mine.

  9. eyeofthetiger says:

Low from behind? Works good with MILF’s full of tequila but exploding debris falling down on your MIG?

  10. pat says:

#9 – If you look again he came in from 7 or 8 o’clock low…

  11. M Garrett says:

What a collosal waste of a missile. Maverick would’ve used his guns …

  12. bobbigberries says:

Let’s give the Georgians a couple of Predator B’s loaded up with stingers or sidewinders.Kinda even things up a little.

  13. Phillep says:

That’s supposed to be a resource rich area, isn’t it?

  14. Jägermeister says:

    #13 – Phillep

Yes, agricultural products such as tea, tobacco, wine and fruits…

  15. Ah_Yea says:

Let’s see the Russians talk their way out of this one!

  16. GigG says:

#9 No crap. To bad the Mig didn’t suck up some UAV parts and crash. They would have been laughing for months in Georgia.

  17. pat says:

#15 – They already said that is was a bunch of rebels… They’ve yet to exlain how they stole a Russian Mig and were guided to the target by the air defense system. Mere details.

I’m sure the media will have intelligent follow up questions…

  18. GigG says:

One other thought. If Georgia was in NATO, as has been proposed, we’d be at war with Russia now.

  19. Pipponn says:

Where: Georgian UAV=USA UAV spy plane

  20. pat says:

#19 – “One other thought. If Georgia was in NATO, as has been proposed, we’d be at war with Russia now.”

Or, more likely, the Russians wouldn’t have sent a
plane in. Kinda like the situation in former West Germany… History isn’t your strong point is it?

  21. Jägermeister says:

    #20 – bonham

Thanks. The last part wasn’t in the other video.

  22. GigG says:

#21 and ironic humor obviously isn’t yours.

But, if you ythink mere NATO membership will stop bad things happening to all members then we should disban the UN and have everyone we like join NATO.

  23. pat says:

#23 -“But, if you ythink [sic] mere NATO membership will stop bad things happening to all members…”

Stopped Russia from attacking ANY NATO members. Who’s talking about “bad things”? I guess reading isn’t a strong point for you either…

  24. edwinrogers says:

I love how the camera panned downwards just before impact. The operator obviously had a bad feeling about the plane.

  25. RBG says:

#20 Bonham’s part 2 video shows where the incident takes place relative to the Abkhazia-Georgia border. Match the coastline details to a map & you can place yourself pretty much where the shootdown took place in Google Earth.

So, as I see it, a Mig29 was stationed way up the coast at an airport near the city of Gudauta in Abkhazia, Georgia, as the on-camera fellow points out and we see on “radar”. First question: With their sophisticated tracking, did Georgia watch this Mig originally land there? (Maybe that is why the UAV was sent?) Second question: How can Georgia hope to hold Abkhazia as sovereign territory if they can’t even stop a foreign Mig from landing where it wants? (Google Earth photos shows & pinpoints sightings of other Russian aircraft I noticed.)

The “radar” animation shows the UAV (or possibly a second Georgian aircraft?) had tracked up the Abkhazia coast and then was returning almost out of Abkhazia territory and almost back into “Georgia proper” when shot down.

  27. Rob says:

Ha! I bet Georgian technology is equal to the U.S.A’s 1970’s tech. Those crazy Russians are really nice people though. Gotta give them credit for fragging a crappy UAV. Go get those 3rd world UAV’s! I would like to see a MiG vs our F-22 fighters…Gotta love the Russians but they really need to pick the right side to fight on!

  28. amodedoma says:

Big surprise, one of the world’s top fighters, against a slow moving, unarmed UAV. A few tips for the Georgians, use stealth (little metal as possible, radar refelctive fusilage), the smaller the better. This way it’s hard to target. Oh, and fly at night where possible.

  29. GF says:

NATO over UN anyday. A nice big American naval base on the Black Sea would be really cool!
