At least 23 people in 14 states have been sickened by the same strain of salmonella found in two breakfast cereals recalled by Malt-O-Meal.

Malt-O-Meal voluntarily recalled its unsweetened Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat cereals April 5 after finding salmonella contamination during routine testing. The affected bags were produced in the past 12 months in Northfield.

Three people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The FDA said the recalled products were distributed nationally under the Malt-O-Meal brand name, as well as private labels including Acme, America’s Choice, Food Club, Giant, Hannaford, Jewel, Laura Lynn, Pathmark, Shaw’s, ShopRite, Tops and Weis Quality.

After the manufacturer notified them of the danger, it only took the FDA eight more days to send out its own recall…

We are probably lucky this wasn’t branded an National Security secret and buried. Eight days is a sprint for this administration.

  3. HMeyers says:

Malt-O-Meal? WTF cereal is that? Sounds like Sanka or Tang or something from 1970s.

Looks like the cereal company got an idea for free advertising.

  4. GigG says:

So all 23 people that still eat it got sick. Who the hell eats Malt-O-Meal anymore? It was old when I wasn’t.

  5. Jason Z. says:

I work at Weis Markets, and to be fair, Malt-o-Meal must have also given the stores the warning because we had them off the shelf many days ago. So the only ones screwed by the FDA were the ones who already bought the stuff and ate it in those 8 days.

HMeyers:Malt-o-Meal is a generic brand of cereal, they also make the store brands.

  6. Dave W says:

This was not the hot cereal Malt-o-meal we may recall from our youth. If you read the story, or listen to the newscasts, it was for puffed rice and puffed wheat (cold cereal) and much of it was sold under private (store) brand labels.

  7. roemun says:

    Of course, it’s Bush’s FDA, so it’s Bush’s fault.

  8. eyeofthetiger says:

Hey #7 your a hero. Can I smell your socks?

  9. Improbus says:

    @roemun

Well, that is where the buck *once* stopped.

Of course we know the Glorious Leader™ can do no wrong.

#2 “Er, that should be wasn’t not was. Oh, my kingdom for an edit button.”

He, he. I know the feeling. What happened to that “edit your own entries” function? Must not be a feature of blogs. But I remember being able to do it at one time, somewhere.

  11. Glenn E. says:

Hey, the exact same thing happened to Malt-O-Meal, ten years ago (June 1998). What gives? BTW, they are the 5th largest cereal maker. Think this latest outbreak was the results of the fat german boy falling into the chocolate river at Wonka’s factory.
