Desktop Linux – March 21, 2008
:

NPD, a global market research company, has revealed that Apple’s share of the U.S. computer market jumped to 14 percent in February 2008. This was up from 9 percent in February 2007.

In comparison to the overall market, U.S. PC retail shipments only grew 9 percent in units shipped and a mere 5 percent in revenue in the last year. Macs, in the meantime, saw a 60 percent growth in unit sales with an even more impressive 67 percent gain in revenue growth over the same period.

In an investors’ research note based on the NPD data, Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves said that Apple did especially well with its laptops. Better still, though, “MacBook Air sales appear to be additive to total sales, rather than replacing MacBook Pro sales. We believe a new set of corporate customers makes up a meaningful portion of MacBook Air buyers,” said Hargreaves.

During his speech at the 2009 MacWorld conference, Steve Jobs said:

“I, Steve Jobs, would like to show my appreciation to Bill Gates for the shining example of how not to make an OS!”

“Thanks, Bill, this one’s for you!”

  2. Noam Sane says:

At least Vista is a success for somebody.

  3. kjackman says:

Yeah, when I saw the article, “Vista” was the first word that popped into mind. Don’t discount “business bling,” though… A MacBook Air can really make you stand out at board meetings :-/

  4. James Hill says:

Your collective Apple worship is noted. Watch for this number to level off at 22 percent.

  5. becagle says:

Gee, could they rise in Apple’s market share be attributed to, oh I don’t know, the fact that Macs can run Windows? Or could it be that many Mac users who have had to purchase new Macs because there old Macs couldn’t handle the new OS? Or were people holding off buying a Mac because they didn’t want to have to pay extra for the new OS.

There are alot of reasons people are buying Macs now and it has little to do with Steve Jobs or Bill Gates.

If I had the money I too would buy a MacBook, because I could run OSX and Windows together in one machine.

  6. Mark Derail says:

You all know what that means !!!!

Computers aren’t just for 3D gaming anymore.

Ironic that an XBox-360 + Mac Pro desktop will provide an average user a better overall experience than a Killer-spec’ed DELL with SLI.

    …for the same price!

DISCLAIMER :: I OWN ZERO MAC PRODUCTS

  7. BrianS says:

I remember a few years ago when SJ said how great it would be if Apple could double its market share and reach 12%.

    Looks like he did it!

  8. edwinrogers says:

Nice result. Although, I wish they made better mice.

  9. MikeN says:

What this tells me is that people are unsatisfied with their Apple computers, and they feel the need to buy a newer model, while the Windows ones are so robust that the market there isn’t as big. I’m still using a laptop from 2000, and a desktop from 2001.

  10. Mister Mustard says:

    >>Your collective Apple worship is noted.
    >>Watch for this number to level off at
    >>22 percent.

And watch Windoze market share continue to shrink, as folks switch over to Linux.

    >>I’m still using a laptop from 2000, and a
    >>desktop from 2001.

So. At least you haven’t downgraded to Vista. Had you, you’d be the biggest MacFanBoi or Linux fanatic on Dvorak dot org slash blog.

  11. zybch says:

#10, you know the worldwide linux penetration on the desktop? Its below 2%, and has been hovering at about that level for a long time now. If its so damn good you’d expect people to be using it more don’t ya think?
And mac penetration is still well under 5% worldwide. The only people shallow enough to want to get a mac seem to be americans, where appearance means far more than actual usefulness.

  12. zybch says:

Oh, and the vista thing? If Vista is a failure with almost 150m copies sold, then I’d LOVE to have such a failure on my hands!
Seriously, the only people that are still bashing Vista are the sad twats who still haven’t used it, or at least used it on a reasonable PC. Its the 2nd most successfull OS ever (after XP) and yet its a failure?
Geez, grow up you stupid anti-MS twits, and get over your own egos for a change.

  13. brian says:

Despite the millions and millions of advertising dollars, the millions of fanboy posts, and 12% is supposed to be considered a success?

How about this sobering fact, macboys? 88% of computers are NOT macs?

Get over yourselves. Macs will never be anything more than a niche product.

  14. Mister Mustard says:

    >>If Vista is a failure with almost 150m copies
    >>sold, then I’d LOVE to have such a failure
    >>on my hands!

Haw haw haw! Har! Are you a MicroBoi, or are you just a dummy?

How many of those copies do you imagine were actually “sold”, and how many stuffed down the throats of hapless computer buyers as the only OS that they could get on their new machine??

Now that folks can upgrade back to XP on new computers, sales are cooling more quickly than a corpse on an iceberg. Not to mention OS X and Linux.

Watch the “sales” figures in the future. Don’t bring the shades; the future’s not that bright!!

  15. Breetai says:

Well… is there a light at the end of the tunnel that might break the monopoly? I don’t think apple is it my money is on Google, wait until they decide to make an OS 🙂 Everyone is going to flock to them since they won’t have contracts with hardware vendors to force hardware upgrades it’ll actually be backwards compatible.

  16. SN says:

“What this tells me is that people are unsatisfied with their Apple computers, and they feel the need to buy a newer model, while the Windows ones are so robust that the market there isn’t as big. I’m still using a laptop from 2000, and a desktop from 2001.”

Let me guess, you work in marketing.

  17. Nik says:

How about you use whatever computer you like and STFU. Fanboys (Mac and MSFT) make me sick, they are equivalent to religious zealots.

If your a Mac Fanboy, quit being a friggin snob iMacs and the MacBook Air aren’t that special. And for you MSFT Fanboys, Windows (XP and Vista) are both garbage. Last good version of Windows, IMO was 2000. Linux Fanboys will always scrape the bottom of the barrel since it is entirely too difficult for an AVERAGE person to open a calculator on the damn thing.

For the record, I use Macs at home and Windows at work.

  18. PJAM3 says:

It does get tiring. I have a Mac with leopard and tiger at home. I have an XP machine and a Vista machine. I have a Solaris as well as a Red hat machine. I started to use Ubuntu but I haven’t had much time to play around with it.

Who cares what the market share is. use whatever you want in the end the only people who care are the big corporate billionaires who smile because they got richer or poorer. For me, as long as it works and does what I need it to do, I could care less where it comes from.

  19. bill says:

I keep telling you so!!! If I owned a business I would fire anyone who didn’t use a Mac and open source.

    Doah!!

MS is a waste of money and time.

  20. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#6 – Ironic that an XBox-360 + Mac Pro desktop will provide an average user a better overall experience than a Killer-spec’ed DELL with SLI.

    That’s a good one… A killer spec’d Dell… Like that is a real thing.

Real gamers build their own boxes. (Mine glows in the dark… Oooooh…. Shiney!)

  21. Bud says:

#5 There are better ways to explain the Mac’s phenomenal growth rate. I have a 2004 era *Power*book and its running Leopard just fine. How many 2004 era PCs are running Vista??

  22. Mister Feline Feces says:

    No big deal, right Vistards?

  23. amodedoma says:

I’ve pratically got a cottage industry going based on XP’ing new laptops. Forcing an unpopular OS like Vista on the market was a risky move, and now those hardware sellers that got into bed with MS are gonna have to pay with their losses MS’s gain. The fact that Vista is practically the only option for a new laptop or the complete absence of xp drivers for new hardware are examples, but there are many more. Yep, been watching the changes in this industry since it’s beginning and one things for sure, if you want to make money in this, you’d better know what’s going on.

MAC, PC, MS, Linux, OSX, hell it don’t matter as long as I can make a buck. The customer (note I didn’t use the phrase – average tit head) will decide this one, not the pros, not the fanboys – and god bless america, this is as it should be.

  26. Glenn E. says:

Let us not discount the Vista effect. In order to get the same level of Music and Movie sales, on the PC, as Macs have. Microsoft had to bend over royally to the media industry. That meant an OS that does more to protect media rights, than it does to make the users experience a better one.

And BTW, I don’t understand what all the hype is over Aeroglass, and the need for better hardware to use it. I’ve got all old 600MHz Dell, with a standard gfx card. And when I go to use Win Moviemaker. It leave behind a transparent blue bar on the screen with “Save movie as….” printed in white. This doesn’t adversely effect anything else running. It just stays there until I restart the PC. Not if this can be done by accident, on an aging machine with less than a meg of Ram. Why can’t it be done on purpose, as a new feature of XP? All that missing is some mouse interaction, with transparent image, and non-static content. But clearing it doesn’t require a system four times faster, with a more powerful gfx card to see anything remotely like Aeroglass. If that’s what really sells Vista (it doesn’t for me).

  27. Joey B says:

If u like macs ur probably an iStiff.
If you buy any dell your an asshat.
If all u need is a Texas Instruments then ur legit. If u use linux ur a hacker!
If u didnt already know that Mac is linux then ur not a hacker ur still an iStiff. Oh, and i almost forgot, if Tay Zonday’s Chocolate Rain isnt your ringtone yet your living in a cave.
