Second Hand Smoke May Hinder Nintendo Wii Operation
It’s undisputable that smoking is hazardous to one’s health, but who could have expected that the smoke from cigarettes could also be harmful to a videogame system?
Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released last Sunday, and will likely be one of Nintendo’s biggest Wii titles for 2008. Several of those who purchased the game found that their Wii consoles had issues reading the disc, preventing it from running.
According to the Boston Herald, second-hand cigarette smoke could be one of the culprits for giving the Wii trouble in reading the disc. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the biggest Wii game yet, and requires dual-layer DVD media in order to contain all the data. The slightest bit of smoke residue on the optical pickup inside the Wii could be enough to stop the console from reading the dual-layer disc.

you know it’s a tough day for news when the image is more interesting then the story. lol at “sometimes dressed funny”
Well so much for the health benefits of the wii… Cause if the wii causes people to smoke, and possible health benefits from all that arm waving are nullified.
I think it is just more likely that with a couple of exceptions dvd drives just don’t last that long… That goes doubly for the dvd drives in a game console, because they seem to get the heaviest use… And the wii is a slot loading drive, one of the worst offenders.
This is in the forums, and we have a debate.
Well, I am glad it’s second-hand smoke causing the problems, and the Wii’s aren’t the ones smoking the cigarettes.
what about weed smoke? i think my ps3 already has a lung tumor.
I feel so incredibly smart for staying away from dual layer discs to store my data. And from smoking too. Or is that it’s the wii that is smoking?
How far did Mr. Marotta of the Boston Herald have to go for this?
Actually, not far. Even when I started out as a [mainframe IBM] programmer in 1965 smoking was not allowed in some computer rooms, and by 1975 that was almost universal. More because of ash than smoke, but it was a “risk” about which management could actually do something without spending money – as opposed to requiring everyone to wear bio-hazard gear to keep down dust particles.
And even as a smoker myself, I was horrified to see, on a visit to one site, open disc and tape drives and ashtrays in the computer room.
But… you are more likely to scratch the disk inserting and removing it than by smoking while the drive is closed and non-mounted discs are in storage.
