A nine-year-old schoolgirl who went missing in the North Midlands of England more than three weeks ago was found on Friday, police said.

Police found Shannon Matthews about a kilometre from her home, hidden under a bed after breaking down the door of the property.

Shannon went missing on her way home from school on February 19, her disappearance sparking an intense nationwide investigation…

But there was nothing until Friday, when a woman living in the home’s downstairs flat raised an alarm to police.

She told police she heard sounds of a child coming from a home occupied by a single man.

That afternoon, police burst through the doors of the row house in Dewsbury, about 400 kilometres north of London, and found Shannon hidden in a drawer under a bed in the home…

The sad truth is that missing kids who aren’t found early on – often aren’t ever found – alive or not.

This time, a downstairs neighbor heard a child’s footsteps above and knew her neighbor’s own kids had been taken into care, long ago. Letting the police know of her suspicions prompted Shannon’s rescue.

Wow, a dad of two, this gives me chills.

  2. bobbo says:

This reminds me of that guy in the news about a year ago who kidnapped a child and kept her in his bedroom in his MOBILEHOME—and his two roommates claimed no knowledge of this state of affairs when asked by the police if they knew of the kidnapping–a few days before the child was killed.

And these two “friends” or family members or whatever weren’t charged with aiding and abetting this crime.

So–yes, nosey neighbors are the default if roommates are going to turn a blind eye.

Yeah, I went to a neighbors house and saw the Koran on his bookshelf. I reported him to the DHS and he is now in Guantanamo.

    Long live the Homeland!

  4. green says:

Report everything you think is suspicious… Message brought to you by DHS.

  5. rectagon says:

Make all the DHS jokes you want… but, being (or having) a good neighbour is a lost blessing in our world today. Nice find eideard.

  6. Cinaedh says:

I’m so relieved this 39-year-old man didn’t try to escape by jumping head first out of a high window or accidentally fall down the stairs, face first, after they cuffed him.
