Poles should not be allowed to vote online because the Internet attracts people who watch “pornography while sipping a bottle of beer”, a former prime minister told his party’s Web site.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski and other leaders of his conservative party have said they wanted to rejuvenate their ranks and reach out to Internet users after losing power last October when younger voters flocked to their centre-right rivals.

Poland’s election commission is floating proposals such as allowing people to vote online to boost turnout…

He added that Internet users are “the easiest group to manipulate, to suggest who to vote for.”

Kaczynski..admits to not using a cell phone or having a bank account.

A Luddite and a conservative. Who’da thunk it?

I can’t believe someone at Reuters had enough of a sense of humor to poke fun at Kaczynski being vertically as well technology-challenged. How did that photo ever get past their PC editors?

  2. Named says:

“watching pornography while sipping a bottle of beer”

Well, does he have a better suggestion?

  3. Improbus says:

    @Named

“watching pornography while smoking a spliff”

  4. bobbo says:

Lets go to the substance of what he “thinks:” “He added that Internet users are “the easiest group to manipulate, to suggest who to vote for.”

Now, on the later, YES–interwebitubers are the easiest to suggest who to vote for because all you do is send them free email==but is the former accurate?–that they will act as you wish on the suggestion?==or would this go to the point that most lists of people are filtered in some way as in they agreed to be on the list in the first place?

I keep thinking I should remove myself from several conservative email lists I am on as not a single email from them as been anything but manipulative—but its fun to see what the opposition thinks motivates their people. “fun” in, I don’t want to cry.

  5. Named says:

    3,

“watching pornography while smoking a spiff and drinking a beer to quench drymouth.”

    I think that’s it!

#4 – Lets go to the substance of what he “thinks:” “He added that Internet users are “the easiest group to manipulate, to suggest who to vote for.”

Now, on the later, YES–interwebitubers are the easiest to suggest who etc., so forth, so on, yadda yadda whattaya know, nudge nudge…”

What substance of what he thinks? Internet users are easy to manipulate? In the Western world Internet users comprise only a few less people than those in the human group.

He is either remarkably dumb about technology (which he likely is), or he’s very cynical about people (which he likely is), but in any case, you simply cannot lump “Internet users” into a broad group.

It’s like saying… “Americans are split between Clinton and Obama, but Internet users are voting for Ron Paul.”

  8. bobbo says:

#7–OFTLO==Well, I avoided that take on the issue as not having any info on the internet usage of the Polish Electorate. I think we both make good guesses at to what he was thinking of.

Maybe like Geraldine Ferrarro, it would be fun to ask a series of followup questions to clarify just how retarded he is?

  9. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#6 – To imply that Conservatives are ludites only shows the pathetic liberal bias

He isn’t implying that conservatives (lowercase, man, not a proper noun) are Luddites (uppercase, proper noun derived from Ned Ludd’s name). He’s implying that Luddites are conservatives. There’s a big difference.

    RIF

#8 – Maybe like Geraldine Ferrarro, it would be fun to ask a series of follow up questions to clarify just how retarded he is?

At first, it seems like a good idea to determine the level of retardedness in a leader… But then you have to question the purpose of that exercise.

I mean, is there any level of being retarded that you think would be desirable? 🙂

By the way, the Ferraro reference flew by me… what are you referring to?

  11. bobbo says:

#10–OFTLO==What I thought as I posted is the breaking news regarding Geraldine’s comments on how easy Barrack is having it in this election because he is a black person. To me, in its most charitable view, this reveals a politicians disdain for the people. Follow up questions might show a more twisted heart in play.

As to your logic exercise posted at #9–I thought our dear editor was only saying there is a lot of overlap. Certainly not all Luddites are conservative as you state? I’m thinking of tree hugging greenies who don’t know how to dial a phone here–although as a joke, I could have said “Geraldine Ferraro” as well representing a liberal Luddite?

  12. Dallas says:

    #2 LOL. Good one

  13. MikeN says:

Whydo people think it is a good thing to expand the number of people who are voting?

  15. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#11 – Certainly not all Luddites are conservative as you state?

I don’t think either statement is true… only that one statement is different from the other.

In fact, if there is one thing you learn from reading the myriad of opinions online, many many many conservatives are clearly not Luddites.

  16. moss says:

Eid and I even belong to the same enviro org – presently growing from statewide to regional. We laugh over the same hangups from nutball rightwingers who oppose all ecological issues as a leftwing plot.

In truth, Lefties like us – and traditional American conservatives of a scientific bent – are usually allies on single environmental issues. Especially, if the issue is grounded in science and technology. Often, it’s liberals ignorant of science who take the Luddite position.

There is all sorts of interplay on any complex issue – only the simple-minded seem to think everything can be simplified. Who’da thunk it?

  17. Breetai says:

Wait a minute. Who the heck Sips beer?!

  18. Pharaoh90 says:

Yep @ Breetai you don’t sip beer you sip wine. Me I sip a nice Winking Owl Merlot while porn surfing.

And this guy doesn’t even have a bank account!

  19. Mister Catshit says:

    #13, MikeN,

Whydo people think it is a good thing to expand the number of people who are voting?

So they will take part in the choosing of our political leaders instead of whining about how they are all the same.

  20. bill says:

It sounds like a great place to me!

Pron and beer, beer and pron!!! now thats very liberating!

  21. MikeN says:

Well I don’t want everyone taking part in the choosing of political leaders. Most people don’t know anything about the issues, or just very little.

  22. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#21 – Maybe true… But I say conservatives don’t know anything about the issues, and they say liberals don’t.

Either everyone votes… or blood will feed the tree of liberty…

    …as Jefferson said.
