“Terrified cats crammed tightly into cages are hauled off to a meat market in Guangzhou”

What? Meat market? They’re going to eat “diseased” cats?

Daily Mail

Thousands of pet cats in Beijing are being abandoned by their owners and sent to die in secretive government pounds as China mounts an aggressive drive to clean up the capital in preparation for the Olympic Games.

Hundreds of cats a day are being rounded and crammed into cages so small they cannot even turn around.

Then they are trucked to what animal welfare groups describe as death camps on the edges of the city.

The cull comes in the wake of a government campaign warning of the diseases cats carry and ordering residents to help clear the streets of them.

Cat owners, terrified by the disease warning, are dumping their pets in the streets to be picked up by special collection teams.
[…]
But the crackdown on cats is seen by animal campaigners as just one of a number of extreme measures being taken by communist leaders to ensure that its capital appears clean, green and welcoming during the Olympics.

So who’s gonna keep the mouse and rat population under control now?

Thanks ECA.

  1. Sir Doucheington III says:

Wouldn’t a surge in the rat population be the first step in creating/spreading the next Bubonic plague? Seems like China would be a natural place to become ground zero. Pollution, open/untreated sewage, animals and humans all in one neighborhood. All flowing into the community water supply.

You’d think we would have learned. I’m just saying…

  2. Rich says:

Read my lips- the Chinese do not think as we do, do not hold the same values, do not believe in the same morals. One child per family, tainted pet food and toothpaste, mass extermination of pets…

  4. McCullough says:

I have lived in areas where rats and mice were a huge problem. Yes, house cats were worth there weight in gold.

  5. Genuine240 says:

They are getting prepared to feed all of the tourist that will be coming to Beijing, China for the 2008 Olympics.
    Yummy 😉

  6. julieb says:

Think about what you are saying BryanP.

“You say that is if it were a bad idea. The people who allow their pets to be rounded up and slaughtered like that deserve what they get.”

You have succeeded in making yourself look even worse than that which you oppose.

I think you own China an apology.

  7. Roy says:

Where do you think all the meat on a stick will come from?

I mean a Olympic Games Tourist has gots to eat.

  8. edwinrogers says:

Fluffy wuffy, woozy poozy, tickly wickily, kitty cats.

  9. Miguel Correia says:

Not going to China soon… and if I would go, I’d definitely be eating at McDonald’s in hope they wouldn’t be making McChicken out of cats.

  11. Steve-O says:

While I sit here with four of my furry little friends I am reminded that there is a special place in hell for the vermin in the government over that is promoting this.

  12. Steve S says:

I remember years ago seeing a special on PBS showing the horrible conditions cats endured while being processed for meat. Cats being boiled while still alive, having their back broken as they were shoved into tight cages with metal handling tools, numerous serious injuries, very very nasty stuff. The video images still haunt me years later.
As Rich said, the Chinese do not think as we do.

  13. Hvacmach says:

According to a Chinese news site they are telling people that the cats will spread SARS and at the same time the people who want to keep the cat are being forced to pay 200 to neuter the cat. If you can’t afford the cost it’s bye, bye kitty

next winners of the darwin award, CHINA!!!
lets give them a standing ovation!!!

oh wait they all died…. never mind

  15. Mark T. says:

    Cat. It’s what’s for dinner!

You know how we call bovine meat “beef” and pig meat “pork”? What do they call cat meat?

It just makes you wonder what unpleasant surprises all the athletes and tourists at the upcoming Summer Olympics have in store for them. Bon appetite, Olympiads!

  16. jlm says:

well I wont be eating Chinese for a while, no doubt about it being stray cat now…

  17. cargus01 says:

Wasn’t it one of the British Royals who said (back many years ago) that “if it has 4 legs and isn’t a table, the Chinese will eat it” or something to that effect?

  18. Chris says:

Haven’t you ever noticed that there’s a pet store near every Chinese restaurant? At least that’s the way it is around Northern Indiana.

  19. Steve Jibs says:

    OK, that is cruelty animals.

But do some people actually think it is a myth that Asian cultures eat animals we consider house pets?

  20. Dave says:

Maybe we should cancel the olympics in China…

  21. MotaMan says:

what the hell are they talking about… those cats have enough space to turn around!

  22. Chris B says:

Every Chinese restaurant around here has a pet store next to it. You think that’s just a coincidence?

  23. max jacobs says:

It is astounding to see the fear-mongering of the chinese that is perpetrated daily in the western media.

I’m just trying to figure out why we are being told that the chinese are evil. To what aim? Perhaps a run-up to war… or something else. But it eludes me.

    What is the Matrix?

  24. Brent J says:

I think anyone who appreciates cats should protest by not watching the Olympics on TV, and let the network know why. That might make a difference.

  25. Joey B says:

Oh, they don’t think like us? How do they think?

  26. Mike Wood says:

Enter the Olympics of Genghis Khan. Barbaric. If it was so easy to boycott Moscow, how come no one is boycotting Beijing?

  27. ECA says:

    OK,

    Think please…
    Next Olympics??
    WHEN??
No cats, and VERY few dogs??

This is almost what happened in the Past, in Europe. Some Saintly person decided cats and Dogs were related to the Devil, and consorts.. Banished them..

    You already KNOW what happened.

NOW add the Olympics to this MESS. People from Around the world, flying in and out.
I dont care if you come from a DEVELOPED country. There is no CURE for the Plague. Only a better chance you will survive. But, how many people will you INFECT…
    On the Plane,
    After you LAND,
    Your Family,
    Your relatives…
    Friends??

Or, would you like to SIT, in Quarantine for 30-60 days, WHILe you loose your HOUSE, your JOB, and ALOT of money to BILLS, and credit cards you WONT be able to PAY…

I WILL say that this story is ABIT suspicious and the Source is not Always reliable..
But, as a few of you may know. Even the STAR’ paper had a few true stories MIXED with the TRASH.

  28. jim h says:

What a disgracefull thing the Olympics has become.

And don’t tell me not to blame the Olympics for what’s happening here. It’s just another multi-billion-dollar international corporation, making sweetheart deals with governments – deals that require ordinary people – and animals – to be trashed so people at the top get richer.

  29. catlover says:

I have heard that cats and monkeys are normal food in china, so whats the problem. Cows are also animals and we have no problem eating them. Let them eat what ever they want. free will prevails.
