An Iowa Republican congressman said Friday that terrorists would be “dancing in the streets” if Democratic candidate Barack Obama were to win the presidency.

Rep. Steve King based his prediction on Obama’s pledge to pull troops out of Iraq, his Kenyan heritage and his middle name, Hussein.

“The radical Islamists, the al-Qaida … would be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on Sept. 11 because they would declare victory in this war on terror,” King said in an interview with the Daily Reporter in Spencer.

Just in case you wondered what the Republican Party means by the “Southern Strategy”.

  1. Improbus says:

They won’t be the only ones dancing in the street.

  2. Shubee says:

Terrorists would also cheer if Jesus Christ would win the presidency, because they claim to respect him. I see nothing wrong with electing a president that the terrorists will respect.

  3. bac says:

“The Terrorist” are winning now under a republican administration so what would be the difference?

Whether a republican or a democrat takes away rights from the American citizen makes no difference, the citizens still lose.

  4. keane-o says:

King is the perfect candidate for gusanos. He wants mandatory drug testing in every school and workplace. He’d like to have Christianity the official religion of America.

Look at his position on almost any issue and you see a Right-Winger desperately clamoring for attention and support for re-election:

I’d call his statement opportunist if he wasn’t such a consistent bigot.

  5. Dallas says:

The republican slime machine is starting to put out. It needs better material, or else it will backfire.

I’d recommend contracting out to the Swift Boat guys instead of relying on some puke republican elected official warming over a veiled terror alert.

  6. patrick says:

Seems logical. I don’t expect Obama would preside
over as many oversees military activities as Bush.

OK, BryanP – I’ll assume you’re just ignorant, too lazy to read any American political history – and not a troll.

The Southern Strategy was an extremely successful tactic designed to steal the “Dixiecrat” vote from the Democrat Party. Inclusive of bible-thumpers, xenophobes of all stripes; but, centered upon racism – the Dixiecrats were Dems only because the 19th Century Republican Party supported abolition.

The Southern Strategy brought bigotry back to it’s appropriate center in an era when the Dems committed to civil rights as well as a number of other measures led by liberals – though a number of more traditional American conservatives like Robert Taft fought hard for civil rights while his party turned their back.

Incidentally, it provided a real kick-off for Political Correctness as a growth industry. Pretty much where and when Republicans invented the concept. They knew they wouldn’t be as successful with the tactic if they simply blurted out, “Racists welcome. Y’all come home, now!”

  9. WmDE says:

Des Moines, Iowa ain’t the South.

Most Klansmen would have been yellow dog Democrats.

  10. jbenson2 says:

    Poor reporting

    There is no mention of
    * a Republikan congressman
    * KKK participation
    * Southern Strategy

    in the linked article.

  11. ArianeB says:

There is mention of, “Rep. Steve King based his prediction on Obama’s pledge to pull troops out of Iraq, his Kenyan heritage and his middle name, Hussein.”

Thr Kenya and Hussein thing is in and of itself racist fearmongering.

  12. patrick says:

#13 – How is “Hussein” racist? It is connected to a religion. Obama isn’t Arabic. As far as I know he isn’t even Muslim, although given his middle name I would assume his father was.

  13. chuck says:

If the terrorists declare a victory – does that mean they’ve won? So they’ll quit terrorizing and go home?

  14. Mister Catshit says:

I find nothing in this startling. It is just more of the same old same old as practiced by the Republican party.

  15. jbenson2 says:

    #13 – Let’s change the wording:

Rep. Steve King based his prediction on McCain’s pledge to win the war in Iraq, his Panamanian heritage and his middle name, Sidney.

So, do you think The Panama and Sidney thing is in and of itself racist fearmongering.

  16. jbenson2 says:

And we have a saying up here in the cold north.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

  17. Jin says:

If Rep King had bothered to check out Mr. Obama’s stated strategy, he would know that the truth would be quite the opposite. Obama wants to focus our war effort on defeating al-Qaida, instead of diverting our resources, effort, and time, colonizing the rest of the world, ala Bush – McCain. Truth is, al-Qaida will be dancing in the street, or rather dancing in the dirt roads, if McCain wins. If McCain wins they’ll know that we will keep the same strategy and focus the lion’s share of our effort on Iraq and Iran, rather than on them. Heck, McCain thinks it would be foolish for our military to strike al-Qaida targets unless we get Musharraf’s permission first. Obama isn’t a dove. If Obama wins, al-Qaida will be shivering in their caves.

  18. Peter iNova says:

    What’s wrong with this equation?:

Republicans = correct in matters of terrorism.

    Just asking.

  19. evangeline says:

#20 – not only lumbering around with semantic sophistry trying to excuse rightwing bigotry, you can’t even get a quote as trite as “sauce for the goose” correct.

    Cripes!

  20. jbenson2 says:

#24 – Kind of touchy today, aren’t we?

The “sauce” version of the proverb is an old version of the proverb.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

    Google it.
The ancient sauce version: 144,000 listings
The current good version: 201,000 listings

Do a little research before your next post.

#27 – The terrorists have won. The sky is falling. One of “those people” might be elected.

  22. Cursor_ says:

What the smeg does it matter.

It will be a slim chance of Obama winning. If he is able to pull it out, then he will not do much more than what is currently being done, because he STILL has to deal with the powers that be, the finances he has and the military that might resist or at least slow down the process.

In the end it would take at least two years if not three to four to get us out. By the time that happens he may well have lost his re-election bid.

It just doesn’t matter. None of these people can change a system that is broken by using the system.

Not gonna happen. We need a revolution.

Conservatives just glibly make up crap all the time.

BUT IN REALITY — members of Al-Qaeda really did endorse the re-election of George Bush.

And for good reason! Bush’s incredibly stupid “war on terror” has been recruiting nirvana for terrorist groups.

  24. blah blah blah says:

Can someone clue me in on the difference between racism from the liberals and racism from the conservatives?

  25. god says:

#27 – on reflection, you’re right, say, if you’re a supporter of the Israeli government. Creeps who believe in Fascist governments – who call themselves “democratic” – are pretty consistent about defining critics of the Israeli government as anti-Semitic.

    Same old, same old.

    Hypocrites all.

  26. bobbo says:

You know how to tell BS Spin and hypocrisy when its coming your way?—Listen to someone predict the future as if he knew for certain. In every case, without exception, that means the speaker believes YOU are an idiot. And if you believe or are swayed by such speakers, indeed you are.

  27. MikeN says:

Obama has said he would reinvade Iraq if AlQaeda is there. McCain points out that they are there now.

I think it’s pretty obvious that AlQaeda would celebrate an American exit from Iraq that allows them to take power there.

  28. MikeN says:

‘As far as I know, not a Muslim’, Hillary was called racist for saying exactly that!
