  18. Libertican says:

The beluga is an arctic creature. That aquarium water must be below 32 degrees fahrenheit.

  19. prophet says:

That beluga is a repeat offender. I read in the news that a seal and two penguins have been similarly assaulted.

  20. gregallen says:

Beluga’s do seem gentle but I’d never let my child swim with one — they are a huge wild animal, after all.

Libertican raises a good question — shouldn’t the water be really cold?

  21. Mister Catshit says:

    #18 & 20

Most whales can tolerate very wide temperature extremes. Their natural habitat might be colder water but that has more to do with their preferred food source or fleeing predators (Orcas) than liking cold water. There are some Belugas that do prefer warmer waters. Most Belugas will do quite fine in warm water though.

The kid is actually thinking “Hhmmm, smells like fish, tastes like chicken”.

  22. gregallen says:

OK, thanks for the clarification. (I still wouldn’t let my child swim with one.)

I’m familiar with Belugas since I’ve visited the Vancouver, BC aquarium quite a few times. They have five or six I think.

At the show, they say they have something like six inches of blubber which I assume would make them overheat in warmer waters.

Anyway, it is very relaxing to sit and watch them swim.
