“What are you still doing here?”

Cafferty File – February 25, 2008:

There’s a growing chorus of voices starting to call for Hillary Clinton to give it up.

In a Newsweek column called “Hillary should get out now”, Jonathan Alter says if she wanted a graceful exit, now would be the time – before the Texas and Ohio primaries – to drop out and endorse Barack Obama. He says it would be the “best thing imaginable” for Clinton’s political career, meaning it would set her up perfectly for 2012 if Obama loses. Alter says Clinton doesn’t have a reasonable chance of winning the nomination, but he doesn’t think she’ll call it quits.

Meanwhile, in another tough piece, Robert Novak asks who will tell Hillary Clinton that it’s over, that she can’t win the nomination and the sooner she gets out of the way, the better the chances her party will beat John McCain in November.

  1. sdipietr says:

Unfortunately she will stick it out because she can see the headline now “I knew if I just stuck in there when everyone was telling me to quit, that blah blah blah”

Wake up Hillary! You’ve been beaten at every post except the time you had a pretend teary in the mothers group.

    Give us Grace.

  2. SInn Fein says:

Stick a fork in her, she’s done through and through.

  3. GregA says:

Yeah, as long as the campaign continues to be civil, I don’t see any reason for her to quit. She still has more support from Democrats and independents do than McCain does Republicans.

So really, if Hillary should quit, then so should John McCain.

I mean, one of the two guys telling her to quit in this article helped George Bush commit treason, then he proceeded to help him cover it up. So really, that is sort of like when Osama Bin Laden endorsed George Bush by endorsing Kerry, swinging the election.

  4. Dallas says:

She should wait for the results of Texas and Ohio and ignore all the loser pundits looking for something to write about.

  5. gmknobl says:

She killed herself a long time ago with me. With all the support she gave for the war AND for Bushit, she deserves none for me. It’s just a darn shame we couldn’t have had a real liberal for the democratic nod. That’s the only way we’ll ever save this country.

  6. GregA says:

    #6,

Hillary has a super double secret plan to put all the freedom loving gun toting republicans in re-education/concentration camps. It is a shame I had to learn about it from Free Republic. I think it is one of her biggest positives IMO.

  7. RTaylor says:

You stay in the game. You never know what bolt may come out of the blue and crash Obama. Funding is the key. Two more wins by Obama and her funds will dry up. If you read the international press, some are critical of Obama. They believe he is far left, masquerading as a moderate. Most players in the West wants the US to stay in Iraq and Afghanistan to offset Iran. They are also increasing nervous about Putin and the ambitions of Russia. Major cuts in defense may be premature.

  8. Libertican says:

Is there an echo (chamber) in here?

  9. ArianeB says:

Based on the delegate counts, if Hillary does not get 250 delegates on Tuesday’s primaries, then yes she should pull out at that point.

To get 250 she has to win big in both Texas and Ohio, which I do not believe she will do, and I would not be surprised to see Obama win at least Texas. She has put in too much money in those states to quit before those primaries.

As I said yesterday, only a major surprise or mistake by Obama could stop him from the whitehouse.

  10. Yet another case of the media telling us whom we should elect. Personally, I have no strong preference between Clinton and Obama. But, don’t ‘we the people’ ever get a say in this??!!?

  11. patrick says:

I don’t see why she should quit. If she thinks it’s possible to win she should continue. I really don’t know who would do better in the general. Obama is as liberal as they come. That may make it harder for him. After he is forced to detail his plans (if he has any) it could become very interesting indeed.

  12. gadlaw says:

Wow, so Hillary Clinton should take advice from a Republican – Novak who hates her guts anyways and is a fairly lowlife character himself and a Newsweek Hack who would marry Obama if he could. It’s funny how the people who hate Clinton are full of advice about how she should proceed and then Dvorak puts one unflattering picture of the million that are taken of Hillary Clinton every day and puts a nasty caption on it. I wonder how unbiased he is then? Right. People are sheep anyways, they were on the Clinton Bandwagon, the New England Patriots Bandwagon and now the Messiah come to save us Obama Bandwagon. In the end it’s all the same, your wages will go down, your standard of living will go down and next election cycle they’ll promise the same they always promise and nothing will change.

  13. ArianeB says:

    #12
Barack Obama has very detailed plans posted on his website for months now, not sure where you are getting that he has not offered details.

  14. Dallas says:

#13. Agree. We are generally herding mammals and politicians know this. Credit goes to the GOP for exploiting this with the fear frenzy.

The only disagreement with your point above is that Obama should be able to give the US a jolt. We can argue if this is a good jolt or a bad one, but I think it’s all good. We have lived in an environment of stagnation, fear and uncaring for the future. I think Obama can have us all rally around solutions to problems in a unified way. The era of GOP trappings are over. I hate those fuckers.

  15. Steve-O says:

I don’t really hate her, I just can’t stand to listen to or see that shrill bitch.

I’ll just hold my nose and vote for Obomba in the primary and McCain in November.

Screw her AND her bubba asshole husband.

  16. kucing says:

Is she still in the race?

    Shame on you Hillary Clinton!

  17. MrBloedumpSpladderschitt says:

The only good thing Hitlery has ever done was vote to support the war effort.

  18. Greg Allen says:

ROBERT NOVAK — the lying traitor — needs to shut up and go away. His input on our Democratic election is not welcome.

I’ll probably vote for Obama but I defend Clinton’s right to stay in race as long as she wants.

Unlike the Republicans, we Democrats aren’t afraid of an honest election.

  19. GetSmart says:

Liberal? Her? Just another coin operated pol.
And if Obama gets the nomination, every skin headed boot stompin’ white power nazi wannabe asshat that ain’t had his right to vote revoked will register to make sure that Obama doesn’t get the white house. Looks like we gonna get McCain, which is bad because we’ll be in Iraq until the freakin’ Sun goes red giant.

  20. KwadGuy says:

#8 sez: “If you read the international press, some are critical of Obama. They believe he is far left, masquerading as a moderate. ”

Say what? Obama a moderate? Are you crazy? Obama is VERY liberal. Listen to any of his positions. Where do you find ANY that are moderate?

He’s smart, he’s a good speaker, he seems a very likable guy, and the color neutral campaign he’s been running is really refreshing. But geez, if you fall anywhere from the center to the right, I don’t see how you can find ANY hooks in his positions to hang your coat on.

  21. bh28630 says:

A woefully mismanaged campaign is indicative Hillary is not ready to lead much of anything.
Sorry kids, action does speak louder than words so not only is Obama more eloquent, he is clearly superior Presidential material. Yes, he is also a Democrat. Those who feel the last seven years have been a success can pull the lever for John McCain as he promises more of the same. For people who believe America should be on a different path, vote for Obama.

  22. GregA says:

My favorite part about this election will be the revenge. Ahhh sweet revenge, a dish best served cold.

Is McCain a war hero? Or is I really a traitor?

And with that I present the switfboating of John McCain;)

  23. OhForTheLoveOf says:

We elect presidents with all the serious thought and concern we employed when we elected our Student Council President back in high school. It’s all a popularity contest, electing the the most palatable personality based on non-sense criteria.

In 2000, while Gore beat Bush, our country still found a way to steal the election from the smug honor student and hand it off to the personable redneck… Of course, we realized our error inside the first 60 days, and we’d have booted his subpar ass in 04, except that Bush got a big Christmas present on 9/11/01, and the legions of simpleton electors were still too dazed in 04, to fix the error…

…or maybe they just liked their slack-jawed yokel better than the preppie rich boy from Massachusetts, regardless of his obvious superiority as a candidate.

I, like a minority of voters, look at qualifications. Who has the best experience? Who offers a proven track record of results? But Richardson, Biden, and Dodd all lacked that elusive star quality that mysteriously makes others enamored of them.

So we are left with three high school clique archetypes and an annoying Jesus Freak. McCain is the best they could offer on the right, and he’s too little, too late.

Hillary is a magnet for controversy (read: a vast right wing battery of special prosecutors to investigate whatever bogus charges they dream up this time)… Her issue is that she comes off as elitist. She’s the monster hybrid of rich bitch who gets everything she wants, and the National Honor Society president destine to be valedictorian. Sure, she’s book smart, she really doesn’t have real experience and she rubs people the wrong way.

Since we cynically glossed over the obvious choices, I’m backing the popular black kid who is both a varsity track star and a member of the school’s jazz band. He’s personable, gets good grades, seems to have a nice word for everyone… and out of all the candidates, he’s the one who might surprise me and actually have the talent to lead.

So… yes… Hillary should drop out.

  24. MrBloedumpSpladderschitt says:

Personally, I like Obama’s chances as he’s is getting supernatural help (he is the real-life embodiment of Nicolae Carpathia).

What’s interesting is that some folks don’t think McCain has a chance and make good arguments. Other’s think Obama doesn’t stand a chance and also make good arguments.

I think one thing we won’t have is a modest victory. It’ll either be a landslide for one of them or GW will still be in office in 2010 presiding over recount after recount.

#25 – Good analysis except the preppie rich boy. The big D lost in 04 because they chose an obviously inferior candidate. It was only the redneck’s poor performance that kept it close.

Looking at Congress and the 50 Governor’s mansions, we all seem to be left voting for the least scary candidate.

  25. bobbo says:

I caught the debate last night. What a hoot. “Hillary will you release your tax returns?” I already have for 35 years.

No–your CURRENT tax returns showing where you got that 5 Million bucks?–yes I will as soon as possible.

The bitch liar might make a good president, but bitch liars should never get elected.

Obama made a GREAT point that wasn’t mentioned and that he should repeat if needed. Hillary is a fighter. Yes she fights everyone including her allies and that is why her healthcare plan (in part) did not pass. Obama will build consensus or not but atleast he doesn’t have a track record of fighting/animosity. Best revealing moment in the debates so far.

  26. Greg Allen says:

    # 20 GetSmart said, And if Obama gets the nomination, every skin headed boot stompin’ white power nazi wannabe asshat that ain’t had his right to vote revoked will register to make sure that Obama doesn’t get the white house.

This is why I’m voting for Obama.

A black guy making a run for the whitehouse will trigger a huge fight that I’ve been itching for.

And it’s not the neo-nazis I want to fight or even worry about — it’s the southern bigots who have been polluting our democracy since the civil war.

For decades the “Dixicrats” messed up my own party until we supported the Civil Rights Act.

Then by Ronald Reagan they’d all left and registered Republican, enticing the GOP to play the racist “southern strategy” every since.

It’ll be a helluva fight, no doubt about it. The bitgots will shamelessly give it to Obama with every racist bigoted shot they have.

But, I think we can still win.

If we do, historians will name this as the year that Americans finally put the ugly politics of racism behind us.

  27. #12 – patrick,

Obama is as liberal as they come.

Wow!! That’s what passes for liberal these days? What a sham(e).

    #16 – Steve-O,

I’ll just hold my nose and vote for Obomba in the primary and McCain in November.

McWho? Is this the same non-entity that has never ever shown up for a single vote regarding the environment?

Or is it the radical right winger that doesn’t believe choice is a constitutional right?

Or, perhaps you mean the guy who wants us all to have the freedom to die outside the hospital if we can’t afford the entry fee.

McCain got a zero from LCV, a zero from NARAL, and he is a complete zero.

  28. Thomas says:

    > Unlike the Republicans, we Democrats
    > aren’t afraid of an honest election.

AHAHAHAHA…Are you here all week? I laughed so hard I blew coffee over my desk. That is a statement from someone that knows nothing about past Democratic primaries many of which were decided by who wooed the right mob bosses.

  29. Thomas says:

    #28
So the fact that a Republican appointed the first black Secretary of State and did so twice means nothing I suppose.

  30. Hmeyers says:

@16 “I don’t really hate her, I just can’t stand to listen to or see that shrill bitch.”

Funny, I can like her until she starts to speak.

And then she says something like “I am in the solutions business”, “talks about her experience” (whatever that is) or “how she has always supported/always been against [insert position here]”.

It would be a disappointment for her to drop out the race until Texas and Ohio. Quitting now would be ridiculous.

That being said, wherez mperkel??? 😉

@25 Hillary is a magnet for controversy … Sure, she’s book smart, she really doesn’t have real experience and she rubs people the wrong way.

I think people like Obama who convey being sensitive are more perceptive of people’s needs.

Hillary strikes me as “Let them eat cake” when it comes to things like her “I’ll solve healthcare by forcing you to buy insurance even if you can’t afford it”.

Plus she plays divisive politics and designates certain industries as evil “I’ll take on the drug industry” etc. We don’t need to designate scapegoats and bad guys.

You don’t need to demonize to solve the problems in this country. Maybe she thinks there is a right-wing attack machine because her politics attract enemies. I expect no such problem for Obama.
