New Orleans has yet to rebuild a single fire station more than two years after Katrina destroyed or damaged 22 of the city’s 33 firehouses.

Appalled by the city’s lack of action, an actor is leading the way in reconstruction of the fire stations.

Without city help, firefighters have resorted to repairing their stations along with volunteer carpenters.”I gave up on ever hoping that politicians in this country — local, state or federal — would step in to help these guys,” actor Denis Leary told CNN.

Leary, who stars as a firefighter on a TV show called “Rescue Me,” is using his charitable foundation to bring together volunteers from a New York carpenter’s union and the New Orleans Fire Department to rebuild the stations. So far, they’ve rebuilt five, with two more slated to be finished in a couple months.

Leary says it’s a sad commentary on society when actors and musicians become the key players in helping a city rebound.

How many politicians have to be tossed out of office to get the allocated funds to where they’re needed?

This isn’t a cops vs. firemen issue. Every part of the infrastructure, every part of the New Orleans community seems to be stuck in a corner this country forgot about.

  1. Joe says:

I think we should all move to Canada.

  2. Phillep says:

Local, and corrupt, politicians. Too busy lining their own pockets.

Past time to just shut down the federal money flow, more than enough has been allocated and disbursed.

  3. john says:

As long as the tourists have hotels and restaurants and games to go to, the rest of the city can rot. Not my view, but the view from the politicians perspective.

  4. bobbo says:

How stark does it have to become before you realize New Orleans will not be rebuilt to its old glory?

Nor should it be. Reality is a harsh mistress.

  5. Sea Lawyer says:

So the lesson learned is don’t wait for the government for that which you can do yourself?

  6. Lives in Reality says:

…Another one of those “beautiful” Liberal cities…

  7. Animal Mother says:

New Orleans: Democrat mayor, Democrat governor, Democrat Congressman, Democrat Senators…and Bush gets all the blame?

  8. doctorj says:

These poor ignorant posters. They so desparately cling to “it’s not my problem” that it is laughable. All levels of government are in this mess. Federal (FEMA and HUD is at the root cause of the inaction), state (the bureaucratic nightmare of the Road Home) and the city (Let’s make another plan). They spin that the people who had their lives destroyed are sitting on their butts waiting for help- WRONG; that Mississippi is doing better- WRONG; that the people of the Gulf South are quite REAL Americans- WRONG; and that the same mess can’t happen to them- WRONG. It is a nice bubble they live in. Too bad it has nothing to do with reality. I thank Mr. Leary, Mr. Pitt, the Edge, Mr. Connick and Mr. Marsalis for making a difference in this world. Show these pathetic people what a real citizens of this country do when disaster strikes.

  9. GigG says:

    I second #8.

No matter if you think the Bush administration screwed up right after Katrina, rebuilding cities struck my disasters either man made or natural is NOT the job of the federal government.

My father was from New Orleans and I spent a lot of time there as a child. I went to school 70 miles away at LSU and I love New Orleans and hate that it will never be what it once was.

BUT pretty much all the flooded areas especially the 9th Ward need to be declared a green zone and no building be permitted there.

  10. moss says:

Nice to see neocons keep up-to-date with reality. Who owns FEMA? – years behind on disbursement and easily as corrupt as local Dems. Republikan contractors brought in from as far away as FL.

Oh, and the governor and – more important – insurance commish are both Republikans.

  11. Ranger007 says:

How much federal money has already been spent there?

Good luck to them, never my favorite spot, but seems to be for a lot of people. And, if it’s not the same as it was, is that a big loss?

But – how can anyone look at that 2+ year old mess and wish government-run medicine on the rest of us.

  12. rumblestrip says:

New Orleans, almost as messed up as Detroit.

  13. Canucklehead says:

#8 when did holier-than-thou Senator Vitter change parties?

  14. bobbo says:

#12–Ranger==is the current GOUSA medical delivery system just right in your book or does it need changing?

Is medical care a free market service–or a basic need that all residents should have access to?

I’m willing to bet that a defective universal access program with all its faults will be better than what we have now.

  15. the answer says:

    WORD

  16. pdcant says:

#15: Medicine/medical access is not a right. You have no right to take my money to pay for your medical bills, any more than I have the right to take your money to pay for my needs, medical or other made-up “rights”.

You don’t assign money by needs.

  17. the answer says:

In this case, since the government isn’t doing what it is supposed to, can I just stop paying taxes?

  18. Phillep says:

The money is sitting there, waiting for the local government to get their act together. The feds are supposed to work through the local governments, not take over their jobs.

Anyone want to slam Bush as Emperor because he is not acting like an Emperor?

  19. jbam007 says:

Why is it we continue to hear these stories out of New Orleans, but you hear very few out of Miss or the eastern shore of LA? Maybe it is because the local and state governments in these areas act like governments should and that the leaders in New Orleans are just incomptent or corrupt.

  20. Just making it up? says:

I see lots of “opinions” on here about who’s to blame. But does anyone have any actual information or facts? Or is this just a blame Bush or blame the Democrats game as usual?

    1. How much Federal money (out of the billions Bush promised) has been already given to the city of New Orleans to rebuild their fire stations?

    2. If #1 above is greater than $0, who is holding it (which department in the city)…and has anyone asked them WHAT the plan is, when they’re planning on spending it?

I’m guessing no one on here actually knows any facts, and will just continue to bitch and moan on ‘general’ issues without any specifics.

  21. wbskeet37 says:

    Hey Moss. #11

Do you really want to post that since they have and a republican governor since Jan 14th 2008? And the commissioners all serve at the pleasure of the governor (read patronage).

  22. Brian says:

You asshats saying ‘you should do it yourself!’ or ‘liberal city!’ would be crying another tune if it happened to YOUR city.

But instead, you’ll bask in your ignorant glow and be anonymous computer ‘tough’ guys who seem to relish in the demise of others.

The fact of the matter is that New Orleans is a traditionally poor city, with a majority of its residents being black. That translates into no action happening on any level of the government.

Can you imagine if this was New York, LA, or some other affluent city? How fast would the money get there? How much would there be? It would be a completely different story.

  23. bobbo says:

#25 & #17–Neither answered the question. Good little repugs. Can’t get off your knee jerk talking points.

What both you social darwinist, I got mine-fuck you repugs, don’t understand is how society–ie, all of us together on our part of this blue marble, benefit when all folks have basic services.

So–crack open those foggy caves you call minds, and take attempt No 2 to answer the question==is the healthcare delivery system just peachy keen the way it is now or should some changes be made?

I agree there is no right to healthcare which is why my question doesn’t include that concept. Instead–“Is medical care a free market service–or a basic need that all residents should have access to?”

I’m tired of seeing my tax dollars go for police protection for people too self satisfied to care about the basic needs of other folks. Interesting how the self-interest gene stays present in some species, and not in others? Both systems work.

  24. doctorj says:

Wow! Since when did Senator Vitter and Congressman (now governor) Jindal become democrats? Just more spin to protect those precious poltical parties. Both parties are broken people. Get involved, learn the truth, and help. If you don’t like LA, go to MS. They are still living with slabs and trailers there too.

  25. Ranger007 says:

    Bobbo

We do all benefit when when all have basic services – but how do we get there? I don’t know.

Changes have to be made, we can’t afford the future as it is proposed. Every special interest wants their part first. And how can you charge old people for drugs? they want their part, too. BTW – what species have ‘grown’ so that the self-interest gene is not a part of their makeup?

Money, from the government, isn’t the answer, but most think that it is. Good luck to New Orleans – however it works out.

  26. The Monster's Lawyer says:

#1 – Joe, I wouldn’t do that if I were you, it’s too dangerous up there. Tornadoes and all….

  27. Just making it up? says:

And no one has answered the question. How much money has been “given” to New Orleans to rebuild their fire/police houses? Seattle can’t build a single fire station without a new public bond/levee. We sure couldn’t rebuild 20 fire stations without outside help, especially if on TOP of everything our economy was shattered due to a natural emergency. So jumping on an “blaming” New Orleans for not rebuilding 20 fire stations and saying they’re just lazy is ignorant. No city has a magic pool of cash sitting around unused to do something like that.

So where is the money coming from? Did they already get it, and it is truly city politics that’s holding it up? Can anyone actually ANSWER a single specific question?

  28. Sying Flaucer says:

I’m guessing if you don’t have houses to burn down, you don’t need a fire dept? seems like the most obvious answer…

  29. Mister Catshit says:

    #17, pdcant,

#15: Medicine/medical access is not a right. You have no right to take my money to pay for your medical bills, any more than I have the right to take your money to pay for my needs, medical or other made-up “rights”.

So let me put it to you this way. We can either coexist and get along or I will defend my family the best I can. If that means I have to shoot your precious pet to use for food, I will. If that means I have to take what is in your house at the point of a gun, I will.

Your “right” to hog the nations resources will NEVER trump my right to take them if I need them. You have no more “right” to life than my sick wife. Actually, as I think about it, maybe less right to live.

Or, as I said earlier, we could all just get along and coexist.

  30. Joshua says:

#11…Moss….christ…give it a break….the Governor has only been Governor for 3 weeks. The Democratic Gov. had 3 years and did squat. The **chocolate city** Mayor was re-elected even though he didn’t do his damn job the first time around.
FEMA screwed up, the Feds screwed up, but too many Billions have been sent to this bottomless pit of corruption and there’s NOTHING to show for it.
The only improvements to New Orleans has been done by private money, usually after having to bribe several layers of local goverment to get building permits and permission.
Charities and groups like Leary’s have done amazing things in NO’s, but the Parish councils and the Mayor have delayed and blocked almost all other work.

And doctorj……the Mississippi gulf coast and Alabama coasts are well on the road to recovery, the biggest problem they have faced is the private insurance companies trying to screw them for losses. But the goverment has done it’s part and so has local goverment, thats the difference between goverment that works and goverment that dosen’t, and NO’S falls into the don’t work column.
