New Orleans has yet to rebuild a single fire station more than two years after Katrina destroyed or damaged 22 of the city’s 33 firehouses.

Appalled by the city’s lack of action, an actor is leading the way in reconstruction of the fire stations.

Without city help, firefighters have resorted to repairing their stations along with volunteer carpenters.”I gave up on ever hoping that politicians in this country — local, state or federal — would step in to help these guys,” actor Denis Leary told CNN.

Leary, who stars as a firefighter on a TV show called “Rescue Me,” is using his charitable foundation to bring together volunteers from a New York carpenter’s union and the New Orleans Fire Department to rebuild the stations. So far, they’ve rebuilt five, with two more slated to be finished in a couple months.

Leary says it’s a sad commentary on society when actors and musicians become the key players in helping a city rebound.

How many politicians have to be tossed out of office to get the allocated funds to where they’re needed?

This isn’t a cops vs. firemen issue. Every part of the infrastructure, every part of the New Orleans community seems to be stuck in a corner this country forgot about.

#23 – The problem has nothing to do with the city being poor or mostly black. NO is the perfect example of a welfare state, having been made that over the last 50 years. It’s a very good predicter of what the whole country will look like if we keep electing liberals.

#32 – That’s all well and good, but he has just as much right to shoot back to protect what’s his. Giving up your private property to help someone else is a choice, not a duty.

    #32,

“So let me put it to you this way. We can either coexist and get along or I will defend my family the best I can. If that means I have to shoot your precious pet to use for food, I will. If that means I have to take what is in your house at the point of a gun, I will.

Your “right” to hog the nations resources will NEVER trump my right to take them if I need them. You have no more “right” to life than my sick wife. Actually, as I think about it, maybe less right to live.”

All I see in this diatribe is “if you won’t give it to me, I’ll just take it anyway.”

    Yay, good for you!

    Joshua,
My mother lives in Pass Christian, MS. I was there for Christmas. The town consists of slabs, trailers and tents. Tell me again what a WONDERFUL job government has done.

  4. TheGlobalWarmingNemesis says:

Why is it the government’s job to rebuild everything again?

  5. marthy says:

    Hey #8

Who ya gonna blame when your town gets blown over? huh?

“New Orleans: Democrat mayor, Democrat governor, Democrat Congressman, Democrat Senators…and Bush gets all the blame?”

  6. supasamurai says:

What you people don’t know is that democrat and republican have no meaning here in New Orleans. This city runs on machine politics and thats the bottom line. One of our most trusted city council people was just convicted of corruption and instead of saying sorry, he said “I ain’t no rat!” before going to jail. The machine of this city is broken.

We’ve got like *7* high schools (our county is called a parish) for the whole city. Pre-K, there were tons more, but they’ve all been closed, condemned, or converted to charter schools which operate outside of the school board.

Our city is a bowl, as you may know, and the walls of the bowl are broken. They need to be rebuilt. Our cops are battling drug gangs during the day and coming home to trailers where you take 10 steps to go from one end to the other. theres like 20 square feet of actual walkable floor space in these things. It costs in the neighborhood of $2000 bucks to the the gas turned on at your house cause the plumbers can NAME THEIR PRICE. These people are getting $20k from their insurance companies to rebuild their homes. *20k* The electricians **NAME THEIR PRICE** Thanks god for mexicans cause none of the drywall would be done in the whole city right now!!

If the president got off his throne and came down here, and pointed a finger at Ray Nagin, and said “BEHOLD, LET THERE BE FIREHOUSES” Ray Nagin would double over with laughter and start to have an asthma attack. He would then proceed to recover and then say “And how are you gonna pull that shit outta yer ass?” The road home program (which is run by a private corp, btw) hands out grants to homeowners. They get fined if they don’t give out enough money by the deadline, and they’re scrambling.

It’s like relying on trickle down economics to fill a sea of debt.

    Did I wander enough?

  7. moss says:

Latest news on managing rescue funds? While 30,000 families still wait for a chance to return to their homes, the Feds have decided to divert $600million to a project to improve harbor facilities at Gulfport, Mississippi.

Just the kind of priority that warms the cockles of every backwards Bush League blivet.

  8. matto says:

It’s so nice to see people here bickering over politics and ideology while people suffer. Obviously it’s easier to write off thousands of people than question your own political views or show compassion for fellow humans.

  9. ddacey says:

I am constantly amazed that a country that so wants the world to believe it is Christian and has Christian values doesn’t give a stuff about its own people and what’s more, often individuals take great pride that they do not.

For those who rant that it’s not their problem and they shouldn’t pay for medical care or help rebuild someone elses home etc. I trust you don’t go to church, or at the very least, wear a t-shirt saying “Hypocrite” when you do go.

Fair dinkum, how do you expect your society to survive, when some amongst you are so dam selfish and ignorant?

For those who aren’t, please educate these people that they live on a planet and we all share it. Clueless and ignorant does not go far enough to describe them.

    Dan

    #35, Sea Lawyer,

All I see in this diatribe is “if you won’t give it to me, I’ll just take it anyway.”

    As I said earlier,

“we could all just get along and coexist.”

That does not imply you do not have a right to anything. It means I won’t stand by idly while you take everything and leave nothing for the rest of us. It is the attitude that “I have mine, screw you” that will invoke danger.

  11. Mister Catshit says:

    #33, Joshua,

the Governor has only been Governor for 3 weeks.

Gee, wasn’t that in office long enough to blame Clinton for the first World Trade Center attack?
