BBC NEWS | UK | Education | Three Little Pigs ‘too offensive’

A story based on the Three Little Pigs has been turned down from a government agency’s annual awards because the subject matter could offend Muslims.

The digital book, re-telling the classic fairy tale, was rejected by judges who warned that “the use of pigs raises cultural issues”.

Becta, the government’s educational technology agency, is a leading partner in the annual schools award.

The judges also attacked Three Little Cowboy Builders for offending builders.

  1. Sean O'Hara says:

So wait, Muslims are offended by the idea of wolves trying to eat pigs?

  2. Personality says:

Just change it a bit. Make the wolf a suicide bomber and they will accept it.

  3. Ah_Yea says:

That’s right! Make the pigs Jews defending Israel, and have that Palestinian Mickey Mouse character giving the play by play coverage!

  4. Porky Pie says:

I guess if the pigs were referred to as pigfidels and the wolf as Osama they’d be OK about it and won’t riot in towns and cities across the UK after friday ‘prayers’.

  5. eyeofthetiger says:

Mudhut deathcults. How fucking backwards is this??? Pork is tasty. These days we can store pork in iced boxes called refrigerators. Humanity knows how to kill the bad seeds that make people sick inside the meat. I’d say embrace the Chinese, but that’s kinda scary. Take a shower first.

  6. Uncle Albert says:

When ah was in the wawr….’ere I spose next the’ll be bannin’ ‘Only Fools an Awses’ ‘cos we’re called bleedin’ Trotters!!!! Mad, I tells ya.

  7. morram says:

Maybe if the pigs wore burkas and the wolf wore a USA army uniform?

  8. gquaglia says:

Its funny watching England self destruct before our eyes.

  9. Jennifer says:

It’s not en tirely fair to blame Muslims for what some scaredy-cat beareaucrats have done.

  10. Angus says:

I’m pretty sure half of the cast of “The Little Mermaid” are also in the same “unclean” category.

Ever wonder how similar Jewish “kosher” and Islamic “unclean” are?

    I blame Abraham.

  11. eyeofthetiger says:

    #10 Yes, en masse. It’s a humpty dumpty-type complex. You’d not understand.

  12. MikeR says:

This was covered on CBC’s As It Happens – they interviewed a Muslim leader who was asking the judges (non-Muslims) to not reject the book because of anti-Muslim backlash (see above posts for examples).

Just another case of some empty-headed idiots thinking they are taking the high road and showing their dear Muslims neighbours they care about them.

  13. Ranger007 says:

#9 It would be funny if we couldn’t see the same BS (only a little different) here.

  14. RBG says:

I understand that “the use of pigs raises cultural issues”. But you’d think the first thing that crossed their minds was that the pigs could talk.

    RBG

  15. Mister Apeshit says:

They should put a burka on each of the 3 Three Little Pigs so they look like their women. Hey baby, you have a FATwa!

  16. Jack Flanders says:

This is silly. I don’t care if pigs offend Muslims, gays offend Christians, or working on Sunday offends the Jews. I’m SO tired of having to be nice and pretend that everyone’s invisible magical make believe beings are real and ACTUALLY being told to change my life for their fictional beliefs. KNOCK IT OFF! I don’t care if gay marriage makes baby Jesus cry or bacon angers Mohammad…those are fictional characters. They’re NOT real…grow up!

Not one god/goddess/demi-god/giant/witch/warlock/unicorn/demon has been seen since the invention of the video camera. If your god/gods/goddess actually SHOWS up some day, I’ll be MORE than happy to eat my words.

  17. Greg Allen says:

As you guys know, I’m usually the first to defend Muslims against the ugly (and just plain stupid) bashing that happens here.

However, I have to confess being worn-out by this side of Islam.

I have no problem with halal and haram… FOR MUSLIMS.

But when you live over there as a Christian, they tend to enforce this for everybody.

And often they even go beyond what is religiously required.

This “pig” thing is an example. Of course it is immoral for them to EAT pigs but there is nothing wrong with saying or seeing the word. Yet, I have often seen the word “pig” black-markered out of magazines or “bleeped” out of videos.

Best I can tell, there is absolutely no religious requirement that Muslims deny the existence of pigs or pork — just that they don’t eat it.

There are endless haram things in this world — every kind of meat butchered wrong, for instance — and they don’t make any effort to deny the existence of those things. Yet they will mess-up MY MAGAZINE by black markering out the word “pig.”

That sort of thing gets my panties in a bunch.

  18. the answer says:

You know what’s more offensive to Muslims? MY SACK!!!!

  19. lightyear says:

John, I know you criticize the U.S. quite often, but unfortunately due to the liberal mentality which continues to gain momentum in our (U.S.)government, the political correctness in this (U.S.)country will soon bring us down to their very level. God Save The Queen… please.

  20. Sinn Fein says:

The story of the 3 Little Pigs is “Too Offensive?” As opposed to IF the situation had “just the right amount of offensive,” the story would be a non-story? As a die-hard, full-blooded, All American Infidel of the First Order, to make amends I’ll chip in and buy any hungry muslim a nice McRib sammich. YUM!

  21. paddler says:

If you are Muslim and offended by this fairytale print it out on a cartoon of Muhammad, wrap it in bacon and shove it up your ass.

Now that’s offensive, see the difference?

  22. iGlobalWarmer says:

Bah. Ballots in all countries should be encased in bacon wrapped pork. You have to eat your way to the ballot to vote. That would solve a lot of problems.

  23. muslim says:

    Greg Allen.
Agreed on your points. Which muslim country do you live?
It is true that a lot of muslims hold extreme views towards pigs, dogs and such. But erasing the word or bleeping over it? Thats not founded.
But I enjoy reading your posts/outlook.
It used to hurt me to see how Christianity, Judaism and Islam was depicted on this blog where the readers are creme de la creme of the “thinking” society with the knowledge to search, acquire and compare any info needed. Thats until I came to realize this was mostly due to need for clicks and audience. Anything in line with ” world’s most outrageous…” headline will do. Most readers here are extreme to deny and ridicule anything “religious”.
I am sure there are other muslim readers of this blog.

  24. Muslim says:

I’m a Muslim and an American and I have no problem whatsoever with the three little pigs. In fact I read it to my kids.

The title is a sweeping generalization and plays into major stereotyping toward Muslims. But you already know that right?

  25. RockOn says:

    #16 RGB
“you’d think the first thing that crossed their minds was that the pigs could talk.

    LOL

    #18 Jack F
“working on Sunday offends the Jews”
I thought it was Friday or Saturday for the Jews?

  26. bobbo says:

#27–Muslim==after saying “It is true that a lot of muslims hold extreme views towards pigs” AND agreeing with GregAllen that it is common for publications and video’s to cross out references to the word pig——-

what in the world is a sweeping generalization and plays into major stereotyping toward Muslims?

Sounds to me you are only objecting to the truth which shows your religious group to be just a bit cuckoo about pigs?

    Explain yourself.

  27. Glenn E. says:

I’m not sure who is real objecting to what, and why. The reason pigs were chosen for this story was that they’re far more intellegent that say sheep. You couldn’t see sheep building houses to protect themselve from the wolf. And yet wolves are far more likely to prey on sheep than pigs. So the story isn’t entire accurate. But then it’s only a children’s tale. To object to the kinds of animals used, is just plain silly. If somebody has a problem with this story, they surely will have a major problem with “Animal Farm”. Apparently these persons objecting, or the officials objecting for them, have no real problems in their lives. So they cause a fuss over nothing.

  28. TIHZ_HO says:

Well I lived in Muslim Indonesia for almost 7 years and I had no problems buying pork products from the supermarket. Pork products like ham. meat and sausages were plainly labeled plainly “BABI” meaning pork with a pig outline to warn Muslims it is not halal. The check out girls wearing a Habib didn’t scramble for the latex gloves and tongs when I placed my pork chops on the counter. 🙂

Aside from pork in supermarkets there are Tony Roma’s Rib restaurants and many many other restaurants serving pork.

Muslims who were abstaining from eating or contacting pork would simply go to restaurants displaying a “100% halal” sign meaning its safe from pork products and contact.

To do otherwise would seem strange to Indonesian Muslims who don’t think they are being ‘tolerant’ at all. The general public attitude is it doesn’t bother me what you do, just don’t try to change me. This is an important point – being tolerant means you are conscious of something that offends you but you ‘put up’ with it. This may lead to perhaps one day you might get tired of ‘putting up’ with something and take action against it.

Anything in the extreme is bad no matter what form it is in such as Political Correctness or even the attitude that everyone entering the US could be a terrorist et al.

    Cheers

  29. There are plenty of Muslims that read the blog and the blog is not anti-Muslim. It is anti-nutty. And that means nutty British bureaucrats, nutty Muslims, nutty Christians, nutty teachers, nutty everything.

  30. piglet says:

I’m sure most muslims consider this issue to be ‘typhoon in a thimble’ and wish that those idiot PC bureaucrats would just shut the fuck up. To those muslims who may be offended by the charming story of the 3 little pigs, why did allah ‘create’ pigs if they are so offensive to muslims? oink!
