Har!
That’s not funny at all. It’s just stupid. Hey bro: you’re just not ready for the Comedy Store on Sunset.
That vanilla envelope is cool!
except it’s not 3k but 1700usd i think.
I have to get me one of them there those aIRMacs manila envelopes. Not that I need one, but damn, it’s a sight cheaper than the $3000 computer.
This notebook has a specific demographic in mind. Macbooks and Macbook Pros will continue to out sell it. In fact this may be more about PR than sales. Jobs has always thought appearance is as, if not more important than function. This defines Apple as a company. Enough people with disposal income or available credit will buy the shiny to be able to show it off.
Seriously, Mac is way ahead of the competition … again.
DVD usefulness for computers has peaked and is being replaced by flash drives for quick backup. For longer term backup, a feature that is necessary less frequently, I’ll quote another reviewer…
“There’s a new feature called Remote Disc that will allow the user to wirelessly use or “borrow” the optical drive of a Mac or PC in the vicinity. So you users can have full access to an optical drive without having to haul one around.”
The only people that will not find that video funny are the mindless Mac fanboys.
Seriously Jim R? This remote use of a drive is a revolutionary feature to you? I’ve been using networked drives for at least a decade. Maybe this is something new and amazing, to Mac users, but PCs have been doing it for quite a while.
Also DVDs are not at their end of life as a media. Heck, even CDs aren’t out yet. If you need proof go to a store and see how many Software titles come on flash media vs. DVDs and CDs. Not to mention all those piles of blank CD and DVD media.
As to the only noteworthy feature of this computer, being thin enough to fit in an envelope. So what? Sony had a laptop like that a few years back, it bombed. Apparently people. even style conscious morons with too much money to spend, do know that once you pass a certain size point structural integrity and functionality become highly suspect.
As per usual, right on, JimR… 🙂
…and pedro? Envy gets no prettier with repetition. 😛
Bob, I didn’t say DVD’s or CD’s were out. So what was your point there?
As far as the remote access goes, you missed the point again, and that is that you don’t need to lug around extra weight for something you use rarely.
Also, your claim of remotely burning DVD’s through a network for 10 years… why wouldn’t you just buy a $50 burner and save a ton of time?
Regardless, you can’t burn a disk through a network. You have to copy all the files to the linked computer first. I’m under the impression that apple has found a way to go directly to the drive, but could be wrong on that point.
Pedro, how do you know it’s flimsy?
Three Headed Cat, thanks. 🙂
Pedro, only you would buy an ultra thin lightweight computer and then carry an external DVD drive around with you just in case. The rest of us would leave it at home or work and use it there when necessary.
Aw shit, Jim. pedro likes to travel light, so he carries a Treo – and a 23″ CRT cause he can’t stand trying to read that tiny type…
Ssh THC, Pedro’s trying to get the jump on Apple with his new idea… “Computer-on-a-wagon”.
That wouldn’t happen to be that selfsame wagon that his recent posts strongly suggest he has fallen from, would it?
#19, the very same. After “Computer-on-a-wagon, there was no room for self-respect.
It turned out that Macbook Air wasn’t the thinnest notebook ever… it’s Toshiba Portégé 2000.
Steve Jobs and Apple is a hype machine.
“This notebook has a specific demographic in mind.”
Yep anyone who would buy anything with an Apple logo on it no matter what.
So its thin – wow!
So its not suitable for power users – wow!
So its basically an Apple – wow!
Want to look good get it, want to do serious work don’t. It is what it is.
Cheers
Jim R, my 500+ disc DVD collection disagrees with the idea that a DVD drive isn’t necessary.
Think I will install some software on my new…hey…damn, that is inconvenient I left the DVD drive in the manila folder…ok I’ll just plug in the LAN cable…SHIT!!!!
C’mon guys this is nothing more than something to really really look cool with, huh? Apple should call it Zoolander Air. hehehe
#26 steelcobra – How you want to watch your DVDs does not fit into the really really coolness of the Zoolander Air.
Cheers

Steelcobra, so the reason you would buy an ultra slim, ultra light, very portable laptop would be so that you could watch movies. Uh huh.
…and you feel your in the majority, otherwise you wouldn’t make it your point of contention. Uh huh.
You should talk to Pedro. His “Computer-on-a-wagon” seems just right for you right for you. There might be room for 500 DVD’s with a little shoving. 🙂
#31 JimR – What is the reason then for having a really really slim good looking Zoolander…err MacBook Air?
I had a slim notebook once and I was forever forgetting the DVD drive and it was a pain to have to get it out and connect.
This is a lapthingy for posing not for doing anything…I mean really! There is just no defense for this unless you want it for some serious looking really really good.
By the way #23 Jager was correct this IS NOT the slimmest notebook…Toshiba Portégé 2000 is.
Oh in case you missed this…

All you’ve shown is that you are not a good candidate for a laptop. travelers who need to reduce their carrying bulk and weight, and those who have installed what’s necessary on their HD for their trip … the majority of business travelers… don’t need a DVD drive.
Who cares about .01 inches? Close enough considering the Portégé 2000 is an ancient P3 750mhz.
Sales of the Macbook Air will probably support my opinions. Follow the money instead of being so illogically critical, and you can make some money while enjoying the show. 🙂
Effin’ A; I dunno. Since when is ripping a DVD or two to the internal drive such an overwhelming challenge?
The only problems I have with it are: no mini-TosLink and no FW800.
#33 JimR & #34 the Three-Headed Cat™
Both of you – My wife and DO travel a lot for business and we are not watching DVDs, installing software or playing games while we are away. We see clients who more often than not have something on a disc for us or many times we need to burn a TDS, MSDS, COA disc or other docss for them.
No replaceable battery? Your kidding right? A second battery for business travelers is a given. Having a replaceable battery in the Zoolander Air would destroy the look and the thinness.
The connectivity to the Zoolnader Air sucks what if there is no wireless to connect to? Once again off to the bag to grab yet another dongle – optional dongle that is, Steve wants your money.
And the list goes on – this is NOT a business laptop.
If you think it is then you are of the pure faith, Steve is smiling upon you and you are not business travelers or your dumb ones.
So if the Zoolander Air is not for business travelers then who is if for? Paris Hilton comes to mind. LOL! 😆
Cheers
#34 – T_H
I had not been previously aware that all businesspersons are travelers, nor did I realize that their portable computing needs were identical.
That certainly’ll make life so much simpler. Thx for the heads-up,
pedro jrer, T_H. 😛#36 Enjoy your Z-Air. 😉
Cheers
