You know all those conspiracy theorists regarding 9/11? What if they are working for the gov’t to discredit people who do find out the truth?
Truman himself was weeding communists out of the government. Before the line,’have you no decency left,’ the guy had mocked McCarthy much in the way you are, and asked him to name some Communists. McCarthy responded to this ridicule by pointing out one of the guy’s own employees had just been sent away because of his communist ties.
On top of that you had Alger Hiss, Henry Wallace, and others at high levels in the government.

Look up the Verona project. How much McCarthy was actually given in terms of raw intercepts I do not know. However, we do know that not only were the Soviets actively working to infiltrate the highest levels in the US, in many cases they had succeeded. No question that McCarthy was a loose cannon and his methods should be condemned but that does not mean his claims about a communist threat were completely invalid.
