A vaccine that could help to control a flu pandemic has shown encouraging results in its first human trials.
The vaccine, made by Acambis…should protect against all strains of influenza A, the type responsible for pandemics.
Unlike existing vaccines it does not have to be reformulated each year to match the prevalent strains of flu, so it could be stockpiled and used as soon as a pandemic strain emerges. Nor does it need to be grown on fertilised chicken eggs, as the existing vaccines do, but can be produced by cell culture.
A significant problem with conventional vaccines is that they attack parts of the flu virus that can change rapidly…Acambis’s approach was to identify some aspect of the virus that is unchanging.
Interesting approach – and good news of success in early days.

They can’t make “specific” flu vaccines for many strains (there is no reliable avian flu vaccine even now), but these guys have a ‘universal’ solution’? Yeah right.
And, of course #3 – if you clicked through you’d see what the point of the article was. The different approach that facilitates something closer to universal.

I was going to say the same thing as #1.
Coming from a third world country, I know how they come up with some of these vaccines. (testing them on ignorant/illiterate humans). I don’t trust any universal vaccine. Especially those made by U.S companies.
I wish them the best. This would be almost as important a breakthrough as antibiotics.
Too many vaccines already. The number of shots being forced on people is too high. Hepatitis B, Cervical Cancer, influenza B, polio, etc.
