In the end, change mattered more than experience for Iowa’s Democratic caucus-goers, and church, faith and values were priorities for Republicans casting their votes in the Iowa caucuses.

Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a former Baptist minister who heavily courted social conservatives, apparently benefited from a substantial turnout of evangelical Christians. CNN projected Huckabee as the winner of the Republican caucuses.

Barack Obama, the senator from Illinois who cast himself as the candidate most capable of creating change, was projected the winner of the Democratic caucuses.

There’s a fair amount of raw data in the article. Much the same in the NY Times.

In Iowa, Democrats have just under 51% of registered voters. Republicans have just over 49%. A major increase in the number of caucus participants – and 66% went to the Democrats to make their choice.

I love it. The carpetbagger Clinton got beat. I’d vote for Bill the cat first.

  2. Somebody_Else says:

I hope this is Huckelberry’s peak. I don’t want to have to choose between Hillary/Obama and a religious nut.

  3. Tracey Durrette says:

This is a true story that must be told. It’s about Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, and how he has indirectly held a man’s life as hostage since June 2006. This story is about the wrongful conviction of a young military man, whose only crime was being spurned by his young girlfriend. The media refuses to break this story, yet the truth will still be told because of this man’s effort to regain his life…

What’s it going to take to get this story out? The Marcus Clay story is so rooted in corruption and scandal that heads would surely have to roll when indeed it gets out Since Governor Huckabee is the key element in this story, and this story would hurt his presidential campaign, is this why Marcus’ story is not being told?

  4. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

Not to worry. Huckabee has as much a chance of becoming president as does Bob Dole. Huck is the very definition of a religious nutjob. Just like Hillary will bring out the ‘haters on the right, Huck will bring out the middle and left sides of the political spectrum like nothing ever before. I’m really hoping for Edwards to make a run, but the way he was squinting at the cameras last night kinda freaked me out.

  5. Julie T. says:

Oh, these posts are a lot of “bull crap” from non-religious people who are scared of the religious. Christians are not “wierdos” Huckabee strikes me as a sincere, honest man and his religion has nothing to do with anything, for me at least. Except as a Christian, his values are for the good. Anyone bashing him because of his religious beliefs and fearing he would use them in his governing are just plain scared of something they don’t or won’t understand. Turn your back on God and he’ll turn his on you. And believe me that’s much more scary than anything else.

  6. Dallas says:

    This not a good.

Now Obama picks up momentum and may win the democratic nomination. This will surely lead to defeat for the democrats as America will not vote for a black president. We are left again with a religious GOP nutt case to finish off the country.

On the good side, I see this election showing a voting war between the religious, fat and old buzzards versus the young, tolerant and new directions population.

  7. Personality says:

White trash doesn’t vote. Obama has a chance.
Also. Aren’t the evangelicals a dieing breed, or am I wrong?

  8. nlnnet says:

How do we know that the evangelicals were responsible? Is this tracked at the polls? What questions are asked to ascertain it?

Poor reporting in my estimation from lazy journalists.

  9. Calin says:

I agree, I hear on all of the news stations that it was the evangelicals that voted for Huckabee. However, he’s awfully soft on crime for that group, what with all the pardons. How do we really know that’s why he won this one? Couldn’t it, just as easily, be his support of the FairTax and its rabid group of followers?

  10. Awake says:

    #7 Personality –
Evangelicals have made the Republican party their own. The leadership of the GOP is guided by the religious dictates of their internal leadership. That is why they have such a significant influence in that party. The Republican party is no longer the ‘Conservative’ party, it is now the ‘Religious’ party, which in America means the fundamentalist Christian party.

It is up to true conservatives to take back their party, or soon they will have the equivalent of an Ayatollah leading their political flock.

  11. James Hill says:

#6 – That’s an interesting racist comment. I wonder if anyone’s going to call you on it.

  12. bobbo says:

#11—Hey Mr Hill—why has there not already been a black president?

  13. Calin says:

I would guess that it’s because the only blacks that have run since I’ve been paying attention were two whackjob liberals (Jackson and Sharpton), and one borderline libertarian who couldn’t get people to relate to him (Keyes).

On a side note, I’m from the deep south, and I voted for Keyes in the 2k primaries. I didn’t agree with him on everything…but he was a better choice than the others I saw in the race. Instead, we got Bush.

  14. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#5 – Christians are not “wierdos”

No. They aren’t. But the subset of Christians called Evangelicals are. And they are dangerous. And it’s idiotic to assume that the non-religious fear the religious based on ignorance. It’s also idiotic to assume that those who oppose Evangelicals are necessarily “non-religious.”

We all came from religious backgrounds. We aren’t ignorant. We are aware.

#6 – America will not vote for a black president

    They did yesterday.

    #7 – Aren’t the evangelicals a dieing breed, or am I wrong?

Sadly, you are wrong. They are growing to dangerous numbers.

  15. Give us real issues says:

I hate this ‘high-school-personality-contest-election the media are feeding us, while our nation is at war, in deep debt, bleeding jobs, attracting illegal immigrants from our neighbor with current trade bills….and what do we get? Huckabee used to be a preacher, Obama smoked pot, Hillary’s make-up-job-ratings, and…

Romney’s vile accusations and name-calling, including “religious bigot” and “intolerant” and “Un-American” spewed upon voters who dare ask him a question about HIS “faith” which he, himself, (so vaguely as to Beg questions)brings into his campaign. It’s not just ‘evangelicals’ who have sense enough to question Romney’s refusal to explain his religion’s affect–his Current LDS HIGH PRIESTHOOD–on his political life. Even Romney’s refusal to answer voters’ questions is in direct obedience to LDS oath of secrecy, sworn on his life, as he is a LDS HIGH PRIEST while Romney cowardly hides behind the word ‘religion’ and today’s craze of ‘political correctness.’

Did Romney’s money pay to keep LDS POLITICS out of political discussions? Do your homework. Americans have every right to know a candidate’s position regarding THE OATH OF VENGENCE AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES, sworn on their lives in LDS temples for generations, including to teach their children and children’s children, in case one generation fails, the next are to take up the cause. THIS IS POLITICS. IT HAS NO PLACE BEHIND THE WORD “RELIGION” except to secretly propagate.

A vote for Huckabee was a vote against Romney. A man who won’t even be forthright about his God, cannot be trusted to be forthright about anything else, as Romney’s record shows. The issue here is, not a different religion, but the deep deception purposefully and repeatedly presented to America’s voters while hiding behind the word ‘religion’ attempting to keep questions at bay (quite well, thus far). I hope our media grows some…oh well.

While Huckabee Did Help Create jobs for Arkansas–during Romney’s 4 yr. term, Massachusetts was the ONLY state to post ZERO GAIN in employed residents, and was 3rd from the Bottom in creating new jobs–would’ve been 2nd from bottom but Katrina destroyed Louisiana. To add insult to injury, Romney’s millions are made by the Forced Buy-Outs of American companies by Romney’s own Buy-Out Firm. WHY AREN’T THESE ISSUES BEING BROUGHT UP? Instead, we hear where Edwards bought his sandwich.

Our media really need to be called to task on their ‘coverage’ of this election. This is the most seriously important election in decades, and this one will seriously bear upon future generations. They have proven ‘money talks,’ but America has proven it doesn’t ‘win’ elections. 2nd isn’t Winner. No matter how much one spends.

Iowans voted for the man with the courage of his convictions to stand strong in the media’s constant pounding just because he used to be a preacher and he refused to deny his God–which is much more than the 2nd place contender can say while he continually hides behind the God of “Christians.” It did not win Romney the extra votes. It has proven him a coward.

I hope our media will choose to provide voters with real information, regardless the money received to present this high-school-personality-contest-election, full of bull-ony.

  16. OhForTheLoveOf says:

    #15 – Amen

  17. Dallas says:

#14 Iowa Democrats voted for Obama – that is not the same as “America voted for Obama”. I am not convinced Iowa is not a microcosm of what would happen when the time came.

For the record, I would not only vote for Obama in the presidential election, I also contributed to his election.

#11 I’ll try to be nice but, fuck you and get your head out of your ass. The fact is, the American general population is about as ready to elect a black person as they of electing a gay person. Not till a whole generation of old farts die.

  18. Jake says:

    lol @ “caucus”

  19. Give us real issues says:

I believe Obama can make us an excellent president. I have (white) friends in the ‘south’ who also think this way.

As for ‘not a lot of experience’ I feel he has the good sense to gather excellent advisors/certainly as opposed to our president’s mess of a cabinet. Even Colin Powell couldn’t continue in such a mess, and IMO he was one of the best things Bush jr. had going.

The BIG problem I foresee with electing Obama president, is all the “old farts” still living, and their offspring/comrads, who would love a chance to go down in history as assassinating America’s first African-American president.

  20. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

One of my memories from shortly after 9/11 was seeing the not uncommon view within the Evangelical community that the 9/11 attack was America’s defining moment, and it was the reason why God himself had intervened to put George Bush in the White House instead of Al Gore.

Now that we know God takes an active interest in American elections, perhaps God is beginning his campaign to put Huckabee in the White House next year. There have already been reports of a Virgin Mary image appearing in South Carolina, wearing a T-shirt saying “I Like Mike,” so resistance may be futile.

  21. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

Julie said: Oh, these posts are a lot of “bull crap” from non-religious people who are scared of the religious.

Speaking just for myself, I have no problem with religious people being leaders, what with me being a member of a major church. But Huck is an evangelical nutjob. Nice guy, and a very interesting candidate otherwise. But he’s nuts.

  22. Angel H. Wong says:

    #4

“Huck is the very definition of a religious nutjob.”

So is George W. Bush, he won the reelection because he promised everyone that if he was reelected as president the average Bible thumper would not have to be forced by the constitution to treat others (gay, lesbian, transgender, hispanics) as equals. The suckers voted right away.

  23. zxevil164 says:
