The FBI is making a new stab at identifying mysterious skyjacker D.B. Cooper, who bailed out of an airliner in 1971 and vanished

The man calling himself Dan Cooper, also known as D.B. Cooper, boarded a Northwest flight in Portland for a flight to Seattle on the night of November 24, 1971, and commandeered the plane, claiming he had dynamite.

In Seattle, he demanded and got $200,000 and four parachutes and demanded to be flown to Mexico. Somewhere over southwestern Washington, he jumped out the plane’s tail exit with two of the chutes.

“Who was Cooper? Did he survive the jump? We’re providing new information and pictures and asking for your help in solving the case,” the FBI said in a statement.

Do these idiots think Cooper changed his name to Osama Bin Laden? Or is this just a publicity ploy to bump their next budget application?

  1. JPV says:

Amongst law enforcement types, the FBI is know as the Federal Bureau of Idiots.

  2. Todd Henkel says:

I believe the intent is to reinforce that no case is completely closed and that time is not a safe haven should you attempt a crime. It’s meant to be a deterrent.

Maybe they just watched the movie and rekindled how fun this case was.

  3. Norman Speight says:

    Raises several matters.
    Who packed the parachutes?
    Did he survive the bounce?
Is he still down there looking for a cab?
When does his Statute of Limitations expire?
    What does FBI stand for?

  4. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

    I’ve found him…

    Now where’s my reward?

Why do you call them idiots? This is part of their Job. It’s an open case file something new probably came up and they issued a press release. It’s not like they dropped everything to look at this case.

#3 “When does his Statute of Limitations expire?”
My guess on Hijacking is never kind of like murder.

  6. Cursor_ says:

Dan is doing well and fine in Mexico.

Leave him be. He’s almost dead from age anyway.

  7. dejavuyou says:

Hmm… I thought their jobs (FBI) was to always look for people.. or, um, well. I guess I never really knew what the FBI did. Oh yeah, they create all the traffic ticket forms. And make black and white movies. And publish a 10 most wanted list and hope somebody does their job. Or 30 years later they decide to do it themselves… Gotta admit, they are really good black and white movies…..

  8. clockwork oranjaboom says:

Cripes- FBI is now taking cases based on Journeyman eps.
Hey, maybe it might get renewed after all… could be best work from the FBI in years.

Now if we can them interested in Nathan Fillion we may have a found a cure for the curse.

  9. moss says:

#5 – agreed. Change it to “baboons” or “creeps”.

  10. Calin says:

Now if we can them interested in Nathan Fillion we may have a found a cure for the curse.

Amen to that. We’ll see how the new Terminator series works out with Summer Glau in it.

  11. Hoamie says:

most folks familiar with the facts of this case believe he never survived the jump. heck, he wasn’t even an experienced “jumper” since he failed to notice that his reserve shute was SEWN SHUT. plus, some kid in the early 80’s found $5800 along the columbia river that was traced back to the ransom money.

so while i would commend the fbi for not allowing simply stale or old cases to drift away into the ether, i think its pretty foolish to focus on THIS case since what little evidence there is points to a fatal jump from the airliner.

  12. Erik Blazynski says:

#3, he asked for 2 parachutes with the implication that he was going to take someone with him. This probably ensured him of a properly packed chute.

  13. ECA says:

    Statute of Limitations is OVER…
    he is free and clear.
After 30? years, he is probably DEAD anyway. Or over his 60’s..

  14. Improbus says:

After 30? years, he is probably DEAD anyway. Or over his 60’s..

    There is a difference?

    [DUDE! – ed.]

  15. RBG says:

Sounds like these “idiots” found a cheap way to leverage their marketing dollars and spread the message that crooks should never feel safe – with the help of predictably pliant volunteers.

Cops are idiots until you need one. Then they’re welcomed with the passion of the Second Coming.

    Happy New Year.

    RBG

  16. Improbus says:

Cops are idiots until you need one.

The only times I have “needed” a cop was for a police report for insurance. Even for that they are mostly useless.

  17. Les says:

On February 10, 1980, an 8-year-old boy digging in the sand along a Columbia River bank unearthed three bundles of deteriorating currency—all $20 bills, and $5,800 in all–whose serial numbers matched the Cooper loot.

  18. Mister Catshit says:

Looks a lot like a young Donald Rumsfeld.

  19. Li says:

Perhaps they have a feeling that the case is about to be solved by one of the hobby investigators/authors, and want a little bit of the glory for themselves.

The FBI needs to be abolished entirely and replaced with a more investigation centered organization, rather than a centerless and unhealthy mess of misplaced and mistaken priorities.

“Statute of Limitations is OVER…” maybe not. If he’s already been indicted by a Federal grand jury. I don’t know if he’s has been or not but I found this story when Googleing Statute of Limitations for Hijacking.

    http://tinyurl.com/yo44yr

It’s from 1988 but they were hunting the woman for almost 20 Years.
FTA “Because Ms. Grinage had already been indicted by a Federal grand jury, there was no statute of limitations on her arrest, officials said. The statute of limitations – five years for Federal crimes – only applies when no suspect has been indicted, they said.”

  21. MikeN says:

D B Cooper died ina Joliet prison.

  22. The Monster's Lawyer says:

He told me not to tell anybody but he’s been mowing my yard for about 15 years now. He used to do a pretty good job so I agreed not to turn him in but now his work sucks! He ran over my cat with the riding mower and left the grass around my house untrimmed one to many times. This is fair warning D.B. get to work or else!

  23. whatsnew10 says:

I THINK THE FBI IS DOING WHAT THEY CAN TO FIND HIM.IF THEY WOULD THINK LIKE HIM THEY MIGHT GET HIM. HERE IS SOME QUESTIONS THEY SHOULD ASK THEMSELF,WHERE WILL HE GO NEXT., WHAT WILL HE DO NEXT( ACCORDING TO HIS HISTORY).,WHERE WILL HE GO NEXT( ITS EASY IF YOU NARROW DOWN WHERE HE HAS ALREADY GONE).,IS HE REALLY THE PERSON WE THINK HE IS( OSAMA BIN LADEN)

  24. McCullough says:

#24. THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENT. SPEAKING OF OBL, DO YOU THINK THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS IS UP ON HIM YET??????

  25. Mister Catshit says:

    #26 Mister Uncle Ben

I WAS ALWAYS WONDERING WHAT THAt little key was for. Thanks for the heads up.

  26. Phillep says:

“Statute of Limitations” relates to the time between a crime and an indictment, not crime and arrest or trial. Once the indictment is written, the Statute of Limitations no longer applies.

I don’t see why they are wasting their time on this, though.

  27. Greg Allen says:

I don’t see what’s so wrong about bringing this case up again — especially since some relative might finally come forward before they die (I hope they aren’t throwing millions at it!).

I think the a-theory is that DB Cooper died on exit. I’ve heard you take a pretty good hit going out the jet, even at slower speeds. At the very least, he could hang on to all the money on the way down since they found some of it rotting in a clump on the ground.

  28. Winston Smith says:

Since the federal government is swimming in billions of dollars of excess money, and law enforcememnt has so little actual crime to investigate or prevent, there is no harm in the FBI squandering a few million dollars and a few thousand hours on this useless investigation.

  29. moss says:

The kid [who’s now an adult] who found the money was required by the insurance company to give half of it back to them. No surprise there.

He still has a bit of it left and is getting it ready for eBay.

  30. DB phone home says:

An individual known as Dan Dvorak spent a lot of time trying to trace DB. His speculations can be viewed at websleuths.com. He probably was wrong, but he did some pretty interesting theorizing. You just never know about those Dvoraks. Now if they could just get the keyboard up and running…
