Turkey praised the United States for providing intelligence in support of attacks against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq, as it confirmed its third such air strike in 10 days.
“Things are going on well at the moment. Intelligence is being shared” between the two NATO allies, Anatolia news agency quoted President Abdullah Gul as saying.
US support “befits our alliance,” Gul said, adding: “Both of us are satisfied. This is how it should be. We could have come to this point earlier.”…
But Washington fears that a large cross-border operation by the Turkish military might destabilize the relatively peaceful northern part of Iraq.
Why, shucks – Turkey might even match the United States at destabilizing the region.
I’m trying to remember what it was that Saddam was hanged for…
Oh yeah! Now I remember… KILLING KURDS IN THE NORTH OF IRAQ!
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!
NATO treaty obligations are involved. You also want them a chance to hit the right target if they’re bombing anyway. Bad blood here going back centuries. More of a feud than a war.
That picture reminds me of Dec. 7, 1941 at Hickam Field and Ford island naval air bases. All those eggs in one basket. How many aircraft did we launch that day?
It’s not as if this is something new… The predecessor to Operation Northern Watch was called Operation Provide Comfort and was ostensibly to keep the Iraqi Air Force from attacking the Kurds in Northern Iraq. The USAF flew their missions from a Turkish base every day, and the Turkish fighters flew out of the same base at night, only THEIR missions were to attack Kurdish targets, which led to Operation Provide Comfort being referred to in a ‘nudge, nudge, wink, wink’ sort of way as Operation Provide Cover. That was in the early 90’s.
Hmmmm, this is interesting, i was in London over thanksgiving and there was a Turkish protest with anti american signs at Trafulgar Square. Apparently the Turkish want into the EU and the only way in is to say that they dont support America’s war on terrorism…yet, they are now thanking us?
And again the priorities shift, we get back into bed with more despots and people die.
