Last-Minute Buyers Give Retailers Relief
Just weeks ago, the holiday shopping season seemed headed for disaster. But in the waning hours before Christmas, the nation’s retailers got their wish _ a last-minute surge of shopping that helped meet their modest sales goals, according to data released late Monday by research firm ShopperTrak RCT Corp.

And with post-Christmas shopping to come, some malls and stores were downright optimistic.

While consumers jammed stores at the start of the season in search of discounts and hot items such as Nintendo Co.’s Wii game console, a challenging economy prompted them to hold out until the end for bigger discounts.

An extra full weekend before Christmas also caused shoppers to procrastinate. In fact, Christmas Eve is expected to be a bigger shopping day than in past years because many employers gave workers the day off, with the holiday falling on Tuesday.

I don’t know if Christmas is saved or not and what part I may have played in the results but I wish everyone at/on DU could have seen my daughter’s face when she opened her Wii.

Not sure what is says about Christmas, Marketing, America, or my family (not sure I even care) but I have a hard time disagreeing with taking time out for giving.

    Merry Christmas

Christmas was saved by spending money? How much of this “money” was actually just additional credit card debt destined to tip more people over the edge into personal bankruptcy in 2008?

Point taken but, it’s still “Bah ! Humbug !” and not very kind spirited..which we all might need when we’re trying to feed ourselves.

Merry to you and all of yours!

Merry Christmas from me to thee !

Did most of my shopping at RiteAid and Walgreen. Going anywhere near the Malls, this time year, is courting danger. In fact, I’m not sure the whole “Mall” concept isn’t the worst consequence of urban sprawl. The one time I visited a “super store” (Best Buy), they had a checkout line that lead to the back half of the store. The owners were too cheap to open more than four cashier stations. I didn’t buy anything there, because of this.

BTW, can anyone tell us why stores like Target have 20 cash registers up front, and never use more than six of them. Even during Christmas, they probably max out at eight. What’s the friggin point of 20 lanes?!

I did all my shopping online and finished before Thanksgiving.

No one got a penny more since then.
