Ever wanted to know what it’s like to get laughed at for a whole day? Try finding a Wii this week.

That was my task Tuesday: to comb the San Francisco Bay Area for one of Nintendo’s elusive video game consoles. And let me tell you, the results were not pretty.

All told, during a long day of driving through Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties, I hit 10 different retailers in person and called 2 others, all in hopes that I might be one of the lucky few who stumbled onto the opportunity to fork over $250. And how many Wiis did I find? Read on.

From C-Net News.

I thought by now people would have realized that it’s almost impossible to buy a Wii for Xmas if you waited this late! If you want to pay more than the retail price, there are plenty of Wiis on eBay.

  1. DrDabbles says:

I’d hold my wee for a wii. Just not to death. Because, you know, that’s excessive.

  2. Angel H. Wong says:

Well, it’s SF, you might as well unzip your fly and say “If you give me the best Bj of my life this Wii is yours.”

  3. SN says:

I was in Gamestop yesterday for less than 10 minutes. During that time three people called asking if they had Wiis in stock. Assuming the store’s open 10 hours, that’s about 180 calls per day. God, I’m glad I don’t work there.

#1 – Dieing from an exploding bladder is not pleasant.

    P.S. Angel you horny bastard!

  5. McCullough says:

I gave up trying to buy one this time last year, tried again this year, why cant they make enough to meet demand?

  6. Dvorak says:

I’d throw it in the trash. I can’t believe people are so stupid as to want one of these things just because they are in short supply, artificially of course. Why should there be a shortage, none of the parts are expensive or in short supply, it doesn’t even have DVD playback.

Maybe Nintendo forgot December 25 was Christmas this year.

  7. hhopper says:

I wonder how much more money Nintendo would have made if they’d kept up with the demand? I don’t get it either.

  8. SN says:

“it doesn’t even have DVD playback”

Neither does my toaster, but I still use it every morning!

  9. Mazinger says:

This is just silly. All year long game stores are overstocked with whatever you may want. I do my “Christmas shopping” early November. I know is silly too, but at least I get what I want

And I don’t get the short supply either. It’s not like a collectible item or something.

  10. Steve-O says:

I got mine last year two weeks before xmas.

What would you do for one? Pay twice as much as it is worth and get it off Ebay.

  11. Mister Wii says:

You need the Outtastock.com widget that monitors the online stores. I’ve bought 2 since Thanksgiving. Use the technology and quit going from store to store.

Wii is the only thing they have not been over stocked with and that is the problem. You might have been lucky to come across one now and then during the rest of the year. I don’t even think about getting one now. At the rate Nintendo is going, they won’t meet demand until the next gen comes out.

  13. McCullough says:

#6. Damnit John, I only wanted one because YOU said they were cool once, and we always buy what you tell us to buy. Now you say throw it away, make up your mind please.

  14. Mark Derail says:

Even my Mom asked me if I could somehow get one!

  15. AdmFubar says:

what would you do for wii-dike bar???

  16. Esteban says:

What Would Jesus Do (for a Wii)?

  17. icrovop says:

I actually bought one yesterday. I was in Target for other things and I just happened to be walking by when I saw them bring out 24 Wii’s to the electronics sales counter. I was first in line and got one. After I bought it I stuck around to watch the mayhem. Several people tried to cut in line. I saw a grandmother running across the store to get in line. I saw a woman try and bribe ($100) one of the workers to make sure she got one. The desperation on peoples faces was priceless. They were gone in less than 5 minutes.

  18. jlm says:

intentional shortages never make me want to buy the item, guess it works for the majority of people though since they keep doing it.

  19. jscott says:

With the internet around why would anyone wait until the last minute to get the most popular gaming console? Is this just a way to create a story?

  20. SJP says:

I bought one yesterday. Premium price on Ebay and I had to drive two hours to pick it up from the seller. I know how the person writing this story feels. You’re intentionally set up to be a fool at all of the stores. Each store I went in had several signs advertising Wii’s for $249.00. When you break down and ask for one, everyone looks at you and starts laughing.

  21. Brandon says:

#6 — Why would I need a Wii to play DVDs? I already have a DVD player. Everyone has a DVD player. Only people not in their right mind don’t have a DVD player.

  22. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

Who cares. These games turn your brain into marmalade.

  23. Steve Jibs says:

#22 Your comment was about as productive as the “I don’t watch TV.” comments. Claiming that you do not watch TV or play video games doesn’t(or at least shouldn’t) make anyone think higher of you.

  24. McCullough says:

#19. Its simple, I got a Christmas bonus, and it just popped into my head, get a Wiiiiiii!

  25. AlanB says:

After looking for months and having the same experience as the author I bought one today at Walmart in Dallas Oregon. Little Podunk town about 45 mins from my home. They had just come in and were still in cardboard shipping boxes on the floor. Had I not asked I would have thought they were out like all the other stores. I guess it’s just timing.

I’m not a gamer but I’m going to have one happy daughter come Christmas morning.

  26. Ho-Lip Tex says:

Remind me, someone: exactly how many games are available for the Wii that are actually worth playing?

Damn, those sure are some loud crickets!

  27. AlanB says:

@27 As far as I know only one; Mario Galaxy. That’s another reason I wanted the console, my daughter fancies herself a budding astronomer. Not that I think she’ll learn anything from the game- it’s just recognition of her interests.

Like some other folks, believing I could secure the console prior to Christmas I ordered Galaxy a couple weeks ago from Amazon. It was listed as in stock. Yesterday I received an apology email from Amazon saying they misjudged and the game won’t be in until Dec 28th. Oh well- my daughter’s birthday is Jan 19th.
