Associated Press – 1:27 AM EST, November 24, 2007:

PHOENIX – A 9-year-old boy looking for help after his mother crashed their van in the southern Arizona desert was rescued by a man entering the U.S. illegally, who stayed with him until help arrived the next day, an official said.

The 45-year-old woman, who eventually died while awaiting help, had been driving on a U.S. Forest Service road in a remote area just north of the Mexican border when she lost control of her van on a curve on Thanksgiving, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said.

The van vaulted into a canyon and landed 300 feet from the road, he said. The woman, from Rimrock, north of Phoenix, survived the impact but was pinned inside, Estrada said.

Her son, unhurt but disoriented, crawled out to get help and was found about two hours later by Jesus Manuel Cordova, 26, of Magdalena de Kino in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. Unable to pull the mother out, he comforted the boy while they waited for help.

The woman died a short time later.

“He stayed with him, told him that everything was going to be all right,” Estrada said.

What I want to know is: How the frick do you get in an accident in the desert?! What was she doing, off-roading her mini-van?!

  2. Awake says:

Gee.. a humane ‘face’ to an illegal immigrant story. What are the odds of that happening on this blog?

  3. Mark Derail says:

I think the issue is rather, an illegal immigrant can actually be an honest individual.

He most likely wanted to work his way up, to better pastures, in Canada.

This was just a story about a brave kid and a man who did a nice thing under difficult circumstances. It’s sad that you see an agenda where there isn’t one.

  5. Floyd says:

News for you: illegal border crossers mostly come here to work long enough to get money to support their family for a few years, then they go back to Mexico. There are few decent paying jobs in either rural or urban Mexico, so they come here.

About the drug running, which is a more legitimate concern: instead of having people carry the drugs across the border, they’re hiding larger shipments in legal trucks carrying mostly legitimate cargo. The most notorious example happened about a year or two ago when a JB Hunt trailer being unloaded at one of their terminals was discovered (by JB Hunt workers, IIRC) to have packages of drugs hidden in otherwise legitimate cargo.

I would have been surprised if it had been posted by JCD instead of SN.

#5 – Mark Derail – …an illegal immigrant can actually be an honest individual.

I think that most illegal immigrants stay on the right side of the law once they’re inside the US, because they don’t want to be deported back.

  7. MikeN says:

Well let’s cut a deal. If you save a life we’ll let you in, but otherwise you’ll be deported. Of course then we would have activists crashing in the desert.

Come on people…She was going to pick up her husband who’s shift at the border patrol was ending. Another example of the horrors of illegal immigration. Tell Pablo and Escibido thanks, but no thanks! P.s. BUY MY BOOK – 101 Reasons to hate WetBacks!

I know that area quite well. There are dirt roads that are fairly safe for normal cars if you can stay on them. There are really cool things to see by following those roads: ghost towns, hidden caves, cool canyons, desert lakes, etc.

  10. SteveO says:

The article forgot to mention the happy outcome…..Then they deported his busted ass back to Mexico.
Said Border Patrol Officer Michael Garcia, “Thank you, come again”.

Uh huh, the ones I know who have left to the US illegaly go because down here minimun wage is roughly about $200 a month (yes, is that little) and that’s barely enough for one individual to survive.

Just because your wife had a shitty experience (Who leaves construction workers unsupervised anyway?) with them, it doesn’t mean that every illegal immigrant behaves the way you say.

Besides, Venezuela has always been a trashy nation, specially when in the soap operas from the king to the pauper speak with the same accent and use the same slangs..
