Machinima is a unique way of making movies which uses video games to generate the images. There are actual companies of people who produce shorts using the built-in action recording capabilities many games have plus custom tools. Bloodspell from Strange Company is the first, feature-length (~90 minute) film using it.

Above is the trailer for the film which was completed last year and released in five minute chunks. The full movie is now up on their website.

    Lame… VERY lame.

  2. Uncle Dave says:

So, JPV, how many movies have you made?

  3. JPV says:

LOL. I actually work in the film industry.

  7. James Hill says:

If by “unique” you mean “poor”, I agree.

  8. Danijel says:

    Rooster Teeth FTW!

Im quite sure this is NOT the first feature length machinima released in 5 minute chunks over a span of 1 year. In fact Red vs Blue has done over 5 seasons so far!

  9. Danijel says:

Actually, it seems like it IS the first feature length machinima as it was released in 1997. That would explain why it sucks so much….

  10. Actually, BloodSpell first came out in 2006 – no idea where the “1997” thing came from. The company that made it (of which I’m the artistic director) was founded in 1997, though.

There have, to my knowledge, been at least 10 feature-length Machinima productions. The first one was Devil’s Covenant, which was 1998, I think.

Thanks for the mention! It’s been interesting reading the comments – BloodSpell does seem to polarise people quite heavily…

It’s rough in some areas, but a very cool accomplishment. I’ll look for more stuff in the future –
