Great Pic! I saw this last week, I can’t remember where. It’s from back in the days when the government sold war bonds to fund wars, rather than putting it on the government credit card.

  2. Gasparrini says:

Yes, quite a patriotic pic, and quite possibly, not even one African-American soldier among them…

  3. JPV says:

    Gullible fools.

  4. Joh says:

And to think – someone actually figured out the placement of the men so that the perspective was correct from that camera angle – WITHOUT A COMPUTER!!

I would imagine it looks VERY stretched out from directly above.

    cool.

    @ – #2

Considering the age of the photo, this photo was taken before our military was even remotely integrated – what’s your point?

  6. Was this done in the U.S.? Where’d they find so many Francophiles? Oh, it was a long time ago. I get it. You couldn’t do this now. People in this country have now been taught not to like France anymore and La liberté éclairant le monde was a gift from France.

  7. Angus says:

#2, though African-Americans were not being used as combat troops in WW 1, they were in various situations as support troops. So, it’s reasonable to assume that, of the 18,000 troops in the photo, there were some African-Americans in the photo. Nice try to make this a race baiting issue, though…see link below

  8. McCullough says:

I love the way it says 8000 officers and MEN. So what are the officers, gerbils?

  9. Balbas says:

    It says 18,000, though it’s probably 800.

  10. Daniel says:

#8 – The officers are men too. But the not all the men are officers. And it’s not like Men is in all caps. like you typed it, MEN.

  11. McCullough says:

Daniel, methinks you miss the point

  12. Skeptical Steve says:

    Remarkable photo…

My grandfather is somewhere in the torch

  13. jbenson2 says:

It’s amazing how realistic a good Photoshop creation can look.

  14. jbenson2 says:

Don’t believe this is Photoshopped? Just compare the size of the “men” who make up the torch to the size of the nearby buildings.

Teeny tiny ant-sized men right next to the huge shacks.

  15. tallwookie says:

was gonna say “wtf is that made out of” then I read the comments –

its kinda lame tho – should be a big hackaday sign – that’d be sweet
