Saudi court ups punishment for gang-rape victim – CNN.com — How does this make any sense to anyone?

A court in Saudi Arabia increased the punishment for a gang-rape victim after her lawyer won an appeal of the sentence for the rapists, the lawyer told CNN.

The 19-year-old victim was sentenced last year to 90 lashes for meeting with an unrelated male, a former friend from whom she was retrieving photographs. The seven rapists, who abducted the pair and raped both, received sentences ranging from 10 months to five years in prison.

The victim’s attorney, Abdulrahman al-Lahim, contested the rapists’ sentence, contending there is a fatwa, or edict under Islamic law, that considers such crimes Hiraba (sinful violent crime) and the punishment should be death.

“After a year, the preliminary court changed the punishment and made it two to nine years for the defendants,” al-Lahim said of the new decision handed down Wednesday. “However, we were shocked that they also changed the victim’s sentence to be six months in prison and 200 lashes.”

The judges more than doubled the punishment for the victim because of “her attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media,” according to a source quoted by Arab News, an English-language Middle Eastern daily newspaper.

Too bad we blew our entire wad on a godless heathen dimwit like Saddam. We might have had some resources left over to defend ourselves against the real danger.

    MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, DUMBYA!

So we should trust the world to insane Christians? Seriously though, this needs to stop.

I’m gonna be the only one who says “don’t care”. Our laws are just as fucked up as any other country. China executes murders with a AK-47 bullet to the head the same day they are found guilty. Japan does it even worse, you could sit in death row for years, or for a day. They never tell you when its your time In El Salvador, Gang bangers deported from our country are killed by the police when they arrest them on the streets. A CEO in the U.S. Robs the retirement money from the poor to furnish his expensive lifestyle is found guilty, spends a couple of months in club-fed and gets to go back to his multi-million dollar home.
    so to conclude,
to those of you that think the sentence is unfair, well, guess what?
    LIFE ISN’T FAIR!

#1 – No, all this to placate a demented/perverted sense of male superiority.

#2 – No, these guys are co-conspirators in global domination.

#3 – No, they already rule the world via their oil reserves and US (Bush) support.

#4 – No, the real danger lies within our elected officials and the corrupted political election process.

JCD – It doesn’t. Unless your power, domination and the status quo relies upon it. Then it makes perfect sense.

This reminds me of Afghanistan a year before 911. Remember stories of the Taliban blowing up those 1000year old Buddha Mountain Carvings? You just knew they were nuts and trouble was coming.

Same with Saudi on this type of story. Its good Oil prices are going up wildly while there is still enough available for us to FINALLY develop alternatives. Indeed, the Arab Culture will return to the sand, and good riddance.

  9. Angel H. Wong says:

And the Christians are complaining not because it’s unfair to the poor woman, but because the muslims did it first instead of them.

It’s a shame these monkeys have the oil, if it wasn’t for that we could probably force them into the 20th century via sanctions based on human rights the same way we were able to shame South Africa into moving past apartheid.

Treating women as second class citizens is at the very root of many of these societies problems. Whether it’s based on sharia, the caste system or any other construct based on mens’ insecurity…

‘delusional, pot induced dribble’?? You think I am defending this?? Put down the bottle and try some reading comprehension.

As pertains to your original comment I was pointing out the reality of the US/Saudi relationship. Our own president holds hands with the royal saudi family. Do you need better symbolism of what is really occurring?

Oh, and by the way our political system is NOT corrupt. Some elected officials are indeed corrupt, but I was pointing out the fact that our election system is corrupt. Thats a different debate if you disagree.

  18. gquaglia says:

Oh, and by the way our political system is NOT corrupt.

I disagree strongly with that. Government is run and laws are passed through the almighty dollar. Grease your local Pol with enough payola and he’ll do your bidding. Lack of term limits in the Federal Government, with the exception of President, ensure that the entrenched incumbents stay in office and the longer they stay in office, the better they are at playing the system. So yes, are political system is corrupt and both parties are willing players.

Can you prove that fundamentalist Christians don’t opress women? What happened to that Amish girl who denounced that his siblings were raping her and instead of punishing them she got shunned out of the congregation and got blamed for “ruining” their life?

  20. gregallen says:

    >>Gah! The religion of peace does it again!

Sure. Blame the whole religion of Islam for this

… just like many Muslims blame the whole religion of Christianity for our pointless, shameful war in Iraq.

I say, God save us from both kinds of group thinkers who make these blanket judgments which leads to hatred and strife.

Hey Saudi, did you know you have a lot of really stupid people running the country? Idiots, assholes and bastards. I would love to get you guys in a room with the people in your country who you have screwed.
BTW, you would have nothing to defend yourself with and the others would have whatever they want. I’d love that and hope that it would be televised live across the planet.
    Saudi government = cowards

  24. RBG says:

So you believe that a 1,300 year old society that lived in mud-brick buildings only 50 years ago, and literally, continuously practices the most severe form of Islam should and can be suddenly and magically enlightened by our own relatively recent sense of “just” society? You think not having contact with this country is a much better way to make them behave with the obvious purity that is us? And you believe that the above situation is the “Saudi government’s” fault?

Of course you know that the “Saudi government” is ultimately the country’s king. But that this king historically exists through a tenuous partnership with the country’s rigid religious leaders in an arrangement not much different from a Mexican standoff. The king has always been in danger of being toppled from within. This is Osama’s drream, as the country is also governed by strict religious law as interpreted and supported by the country’s religious leaders.

As a deeply religious man, and indeed the Guardian of the Two Holy Mosques, it is never-the-less the King who has slowly brought the country into the 21st century to the degree it is. But exchange 1,300 years of consistent existence for Americas dynamic 200+? That might take a little more time than just overnight. Like never – as they find their own modern identity.

For every move in that direction, the king must appease the hard line religious faction. ie: You let me have satellite dishes in homes and I’ll have that new opera house we just built closed as per your wishes. That sort of thing. So, who over there do you want Bush to hold hands with?

I’m going to guess that this rape story is not over yet.

Ant they wonder why the world treats them like a bunch of throw backs from 20 generations ago.

Why would they punish the VICTIM of a crime for ANY reason?

We should have just nuked any city in the middle east with more than 10 people 50 years ago. Life would be so much easier now.

Instead we have to treat these bunch of Neanderthal nitwits like they are our equals. It just turns my stomach. Religion of peace my ass. It’s the religion of dumbass uptight men still screwing over women for the last millenia.

The majority of Muslim nations are considered in the third world, but these morons are creating a fourth category of fourth world, and are sinking so fast they may soon be eighth world.

  28. RBG says:

It’s like being in a car accident you did not cause. If you are not wearing a seatbelt at the time, you can be punished with a lesser percentage of the judgement you might win against the offending driver.

In the Saudi case, the court concluded that the woman is, similarly, partly responsible for her situation by, at the time, being with a man who was not related to her. This is specifically and universally known as an infraction of law in that country.

In fact, I believe, the real reason her punishment has been redoubled is because she and her lawyer have managed to gain an international spotlight on the story placing the country in the uncomfortable glare of international inspection and condemnation.
