That was the most sissyational play in football I’ve ever seen. If the NFL starts playing like this they better replace their tights with tutus.

So does the quarterback get all the credit like Doug Flutie did with his last second 1984 Boston College hail Mary pass?

I’ve often wondered why football doesn’t use the lateral in the same effective way rugby does.

What did I just see? My ears were bleeding too much from that annoying over-excitable announcer moron!!

  11. Chris says:

If you like “laterals” check out the Aussie NRL (National Rugby League). The whole game is based on laterals (called passes)
I love the U.S game very exciting and delierate. Have a look a look at ours. Shame our season is over we play in winter ( summer now but cricket season has started “GAME ON”). Torrent Rugby League, NRL or Cricket (Great game only takes a day or five give or take)

  12. Steve says:

Um, have none of you ever seen a good game of Rugby?

  13. HisMostHumblyExhaultedSupremeGlobalWarmingMajesty says:

The point is, this is NOT rugby. This kind of thing in football is pretty rare and spectacular. Wish I could have seen it live.

  14. C-Lo says:

People often ask me why I think the NFL is boring.

Also American Football Derived from Rugby.

  15. Thomas says:

Assuming that the people wanting more laterals in football are really asking that question, there are good reasons that laterals are only used in limited situations in football: speed and game momentum.

At least at the college and NFL level, the players are lightening fast and thus close fast on the ball. Thus, laterals would probably cause *a lot* of fumbles. Even at the high school level, they would create a lot of fumbles. When used once in a blue moon like this, it catches the opponent by surprise but introduced as a staple, teams would quickly learn to defend it and it would create a lot of turnovers. One of the primary complaints with the option play, which is a designed lateral, is that it was prone to turnovers (that and it toasted your QB). Turnovers kill game momentum and hurt your chances of winning the game. Statistically, the winner of the turnover battle win most of the time.

Thus, there is a very good reason that the only time you see such lunacy is at the end of the game in a last ditch effort to win. For every one of these 15 lateral successes, I bet there are far more failures. Rugby has different rules (and a different ball) which make laterals more practical.

Yes, but what you are saying doesn’t explain why rugby can use the lateral so effectively throughout a game, but not football. If rugby players dropped laterals constantly or had them intercepted, I doubt they would continue using them, what would be the point? Rugby players “pass” the ball from one player to the next to the next every game. How is it that the opposition can’t defend against such predictible play?

And my one and only rugby story: Highschool. The school was short one team mate for a legal team. So here I am on the bus with the Lads trying to explain the rules to me. I was awarded a nice bloody nose for my efforts.

    This what is called rugby.

  19. Thomas says:

In short, IMO what kills a lateral type offense in American Football is downs. You only get four downs and you have to make at least ten yards or give the ball over to the other team. In Rugby, it is simply based on the number of tackles regardless of yardage. Thus, in Rugby, if on the first two tackles you only get one yard or thirty yards your situation is essentially the same. You can call the same play four times in a row if you want. In American Football, if you only get one yard on first and second down, you cannot realistically expect to get ten yards on third down using a lateral type running play.
