USS Hampton, Armed to the Teeth.
Pentagon reels from second major nuclear arms blunder in a month | the Daily Mail — The guys are now dry-labing their reports. Let’s face it. We’re lax.

The Pentagon was reeling last night from the American militarys second major nuclear weapons blunder in a month.

Congress is demanding a full scale investigation and serious questions are being asked about the competence of the officers in charge of the worlds mightiest arsenal.

The latest outrage came as Commander Michael Portland, the officer in charge of the USS Hampton, the most advanced nuclear attack submarine in the world, was fired after it was discovered that he had neglected to make basic daily safety checks.

Here is the paragraph in the article that gor me:

An investigation is also underway into how the US Army came to accidentally fire a ground to air Patriot missile from a base in the Gulf Arab state of Qatar earlier this month.

The missile landed harmlessly in the desert but it could have brought down any aircraft in the vicinity and it has renewed charges in the Middle East that American soldiers can be trigger-happy and careless.

Ack!

    OOOPS!!!!!!!! 🙂

  2. Graeme Allon says:

Always a good idea to stay out of the way of those US servicemen… Just ask British troops!

  3. ECA says:

NOt challenging the validity, But I looked at the front page of the site..
This seems MORE of a Rag, then a real newspaper(IMO).

Can we find any other similar stories??

  4. 888 says:

#1 – not “oooops”… it could (and still can) end with worldwide “whops-bang-bang”…

anyways Im surprised such blunders don’t happen on a daily basis, since US armed forces have as much high-tech sophisticated weaponry as it has uneducated morons (judging by the average US population state of knowledge and education…)

  5. tallwookie says:

#2 especially since the armed forces cant get anyone but trigger happy, racist, religious-to-a-fault people to actually sign up. The intelligent ones that are enlisted are either career folks or got conned in to “protecting the free world” in the weeks after 9/11.

We REALLY need some aliens to take over & subjugate our society & the world or theres gonna be some nuclear exchanges going on (and I dont mean the switching india over to nuclear power)….

  6. Mike Voice says:

Sad how anything “nuclear” gets lumped into one big, steaming pile.

Transporting nuclear weapons on a B-52 gets lumped-in with “radio’ing” the daily water-samples for a submarine’s nuclear reactor?

Navy slang: radio’ing = gun decking = filling-out the paperwork without actually doing the job.

Radio’ing = Holding up your pen up, vertically – as if it is an antenna, receiving the data your are required to record – and then using the pen to record the data on the log-sheet.

Style points for making “morse-code” sounds while holding the pen aloft. Also, for moving the pen around to improve reception…

  7. Mike K says:

I highly doubt that the Hampton had nuclear weapons.

Yes it is nuke-you-ler powered, but power reactor != weapons.

  8. John Ralls says:

#7: Wrong: USS Hampton very likely carries a few TLAM-N (Tomahawk Land Attack Missile — Nuclear) either in her torpedo room or in the vertical-launch tubes in her forward ballast tanks.
The Navy will not confirm or deny this, of course, as that’s the policy for all warships other than SSBNs.

  9. Steve Savage says:

Hopefully this will dispel all the untrue rumors about military competence.
