Deputy fired 30 shots from rifle in killing 6, officials say – CNN.com — This is a sad story for a number of reasons. But you have to wonder why the cop was hanging with this crowd in the first place.
An off-duty sheriffs deputy used a police-style AR-15 rifle to kill six people at an early morning party in a small Wisconsin town, officials said Monday.
Twenty-year-old Tyler Peterson had gone to the party early Sunday to make amends with his ex-girlfriend, a friend of Petersons told The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Peterson lost control after people called him a “worthless pig,” Mike Kegley told the paper.
Peterson left and got a police-style AR-15 rifle from his truck, forced his way back into the apartment and fired about 30 rounds at about 2:45 a.m. 3:45 a.m. ET. Six people were killed; one person survived and is hospitalized, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said at a Monday news conference.
The interesting factoid here is that he was roaming around with an AR-15. I thought the cops were supposedly outgunned by everyone out there. Cripes.
By the way. If you are out floating around at 3 AM partying. Bad things can happen.

You have to wonder, if one of those people had defended themselves and shot this guy, they would be labeled a cop killer and probably get the death penalty, and the cop would have been labeled a hero. Its a sick world we live in.
Don’t forget that nobody in Wisconsin is allowed to carry except Law Enforcement….
(Although these kids were apparently all too young anyway.)
Officer’s buying their own Patrol Rifles isn’t at all unusual. The local PD has decided to encourage that. Whether they should be left in the PD or handy off-duty is another thread….
Note too, that this guy was under 21. Not to slap at the younger set, but there are legal and emotional issues with younger people owning or carrying guns. (Being an LEO may be the only legal way to do it.)
As to standards, here in Ohio, at one time there, were no standards. Around 1967, the State mandated some pretty good training, but you still had a year to take the course, during which time you could be working and no psychological evaluation was included. No idea what’s going on now….
We really have to write this one up to a lover’s quarrel and/or just plain craziness. Somebody inside the apartment with a weapon might have been able to stop it (note the comments above about that though), but this is a “stuff happens”….
None of the usual “easy availability of guns” or “too many people are carrying handguns” commentary will cut it here. This guy was PAID to carry that gun….
Regards,
Stu.
What is the deal with that last paragraph? Is that supposed to mean that if I get killed by some nut case at 3 am it is *my* fault for not being home early enough? Are any laws suspended at night time in the U.S. so that psychos can do whatever they want until dawn?
It is shocking that we have 20 year old cops….they are really just still kids. I am a firm believer that law enforcement should be college graduates, they are older and the education brings a certain maturity.
Damn straight.
Sorry, but at 20 there is a distinct shortage of experience and judgement.
Psych screening is a joke. The people who make the hiring and promotion decisions at most police departments are old-fashioned, hardcore authoritarians who place much higher value on machismo and being “clean-cut” and going ‘by the book’ than on intelligence, education and human empathy. Lieutenant Hardon sez we don’t need none o’ them bleeding-heart fairies with their college degrees and their egghead ideas, we need patriotic straight-shooters who know how to follow orders and put loyalty to time-honored us-and-them cop ‘values’ over that ‘serve the public’ liberal bullshit.
No lie, that’s the line taken by police brass all over Amerika.
This kid, hardly out of high school, not old enough to be trusted to take a drink – and he’s handed military weaponry and entrusted with the safety of the public. Jayzus X. Cripes.
He was 20….the people he killed were all people he knew…some were 19, 20, 21…..so it’s not like they weren’t his age range. Plus the girl was his ex girlfriend.
Today they reported that he attempted earlier to get back with her, she said something and he got very angry and the others present called him a *worthless pig* and a few other things. 20 y/o’s, cops or not are not always capable of handling rejection and public humiliation like that. It’s not much different than the bully stuff that goes on in schools.
This is just sad…..
Crandon is a town of 2000 people. The renegade cop was shot by the Crandon SWAT team. Doesn’t that say something.
We’ve made our police into military units, we give them military weapons, military training, and a military attitude. Is it really surprising when there is some collateral damage? Good thing we have our gun toting ninjas in their tank just for such a situation, eh?
On a side note, this incident may be the first mass shooting on our soil with a select fire rifle in decades. Of course, those weapons were banned from us for our own safety; when will they get around to banning them for police forces? Frankly, there is no need for an AR-15, let alone an MP-5 in police work. Those weapons were designed for killing lots of people very quickly, and there is no reason I can see for our police to be so equipped.
Notice they call the weapon a “Police-Style Weapon” and not an “Assault Weapon?”
It would be horrifying for the general populace to think the cops are running around with assault weapons given all their bad publicity.
I just find interesting they use the phrases interchangeably depending on who is pulling the trigger . . .
I know in my state law enforcement certification requires an MMPI, and a follow up interview with a board certified psychologist. I know of quite a few applicants that had been turned down due to their score profile and interview. You also have to be 21, the minimum age to own a handgun. Some agencies will not accept applicants less than 25 years of age. My wife is employed by the state park service, which rangers are law enforcement officers. She’s recommended several applicants that looked great on paper and interviewed well, but the psyc testing turned up potential problems.
On a side note, this incident may be the first mass shooting on our soil with a select fire rifle in decades.
I didn’t think AR15’s came in a select-fire version. Not that it would really make any difference.

Tell that to the LA Officers that were confronted by a assault rifle toting bank robber a few years back. With their body armor, the robbers were able to pick off responding officers with easy while being immune to the police officers handguns and shot guns. It was only after the police secure high power riffles from a local sporting goods store that they were able to kill the shooters. With increased incidents of school shootings, local terrorism and use of body armor, the assault rifle has a definate place in the arsenal of local police.
So Frankly, Li, you don’t know what the fuck you are talking about.

“20 y/o’s, cops or not are not always capable of handling rejection and public humiliation like that. It’s not much different than the bully stuff that goes on in schools.”
If an individual is not mature or stable enough to handle rejection and public humiliation, then he or she is not psychologically fit to carry a gun – let alone wear a badge. And few 20-year-olds are that mature or stable.
With age DOES come wisdom, despite what many unwise young people believe.
Well cops is cops. They have a punishing mindset and have predetermined everyone else is guilty and subject to their burtality. I only say this after having three cops in the (in-law) family and having to deal with some very odd behavior, lots of drinking and awful bouts of domestic violence. Any woman that gets involved with a cop can expect to be turned on.
The town of Crandon is more than a place for Illinois tourists to stock up on liquor, it is home to the world’s second largest copper deposit. The SWAT team that terminated the 20 year old’s law enforcement career was perhaps ready to take out some darned tree hugger. An example of a similiar and enviromentally safe mine caused actor George Clooney to become ill.
“There’ll be a day when we all end up growing an arm out of our forehead,” Clooney jokes, demonstrating with a wave. “It’ll look good–‘How ya doin’, man?'”
That AR-15 was not select fire if he bought it himself. Select fire weapons cost a fortune, and I don’t think anyone under 21 can get a type III license (does anyone know for sure?).
gquaglia, Li is partly right. That LA mess could have been resolved with a single deer rifle. (One of those oh-so-dreadful “military style sniper rifles”, of course. snicker.)
(Oh, man. I tried looking up the incident to refresh my memory. Now I’m laughing too hard to post. Ah, well:)

Every buzz word and innuendo possible. The paranoiac fantasies of the hopliphobes. Insane.
The Wiki article is slightly better, but still full of anti-gun buzzwords and biased terminology. The cartridge used in the AK is not especially powerful.
Wiki mentions an AR-15, and implies it was also modified to full auto, but no mention of .223 or 5.56mm ammo recovered. There’s a 7.62×39 AR-15?
No, I don’t think I care for cops running around with full auto or select fire weapons. Those are for areas civilians can get the heck out until the shooting is over.
18: I think there is a model for SF units deployed to areas where 7.62×39 is the only thing available, but cops don’t need that.
The interesting factoid here is that he was roaming around with an AR-15. I thought the cops were supposedly outgunned by everyone out there. Cripes.
The AR-15 isn’t exactly a powerful weapon. It depends on the ammunition, of course, but the standard M855 ball only creates icepick wounds on unarmored targets, especially at the kind of ranges this bastard was shooting at. Meaning that you have to hit either the head or heart for a single shot kill. Hence, why he expended an entire magazine.
I thought everyone here would be perceptive enough to differentiate between an individual and a profession.
When some people have an axe or two to grind, I guess willful blindness
rules.
The AR-15 isn’t exactly a powerful weapon
Another no nothing when it comes to weapons. The AR-15 is essentially the same as the military M16 except its marketed to police and civilians. The 5.56mm or .223 round it fires is plenty powerful and will slice though standard body armor like butter. Don’t let the size fool you, the velocity of this round is what does the damage.
It also should noted that most PDs do not issue the fully auto version to the street cops. Selective Fire models are almost exclusively reserved for special or SWAT units.
Gotta correct you there, gq…
The AR-15 can be a very powerful weapon – or not. It depends. As I recall, it’s available in 15 or 20 different calibers up to a .50 of some sort…
#23 I was talking about the 5.56mm variant. The same caliber the military uses. It is also the most common chambering for the weapon.
My grandson is 20 years old. He’s a great kid but when it comes to common sense, maturity and experience, he’s a complete idiot. No 20 year old should be a police officer. There should be a minimum age of at least 25 and even that’s a little scary.
the guy being a police officer is not the issue. the guy having ready access to a killing machine is the issue. There is no way he could have killed 6 with his bare hands.
It used to be normal, at least up here in Canada, that cops, even on duty, did not carry firearms. They certainly didn’t have them in their truck, loaded and ready to go, while off duty.
what I found really interesting is how there doesnt seem to be a whole lot of coverage on this story
looks like someone whats to cover this one up… wonder why *sarcastic smile*
22: I’m in the Army and regularly carry either the M16 or M4…And I’d rather carry something in 7.62 NATO or 6.5 SPC. Sure, the nearly non-existant recoil and quantity of ammunition is nice, but I’d rather have a round that someone, especially if on something like Khat, will notice if they’ve been shot with. Even 7.62×39 will do that.
And you make the point that it will cut through armor. Which is true enough, and armor will slow it enough to effect tumble. But 99.9% of the targets aren’t wearing any body armor whatsoever. Without armor, the standard issue M855 ball with its tungsten core simply punches all the way through with little drop in velocity. Add in the training techniques that enforce tight grouping on close targets, and you start reducing the effectivity of each individual shot as it passes through. All of this is why M14s are starting to be brought back into service as designated marksman rifles.
worthless pig indeed.
“Tell that to the LA Officers that were confronted by a assault rifle toting bank robber a few years back. The weapon they used was a bolt action hunting rifle. The MP-5 uses a handgun bullet, and the AR-15/M-16 is useless against body armor without AP ammo that is otherwise useless due to its high velocity and low slug weight.
This has been another episode of “Self Contradicting Theater.”
“So Frankly, Li, you don’t know what the fuck you are talking about.”
Actually, we were talking about violence, not sex. I’d hate to be your wife with that attitude.

Do you plan on banning knives too? Canadians are such good cooks in my experience, it would be a shame to waste all that talent.
I blame this, and other “bad cop” stories, on the War on Terrorism. It’s sucking up all the tax dollars for state and local law enforcement, so they can’t offer a decent salary to attract better candidates. So they’re stuck with accepting just about anyone who applies now. There’s bound to be some problem cop, now and then. The question is, is this on the increase, or just a rare fluke?
Local PDs all over get plenty of Federal cash for the “War on Drugs”, which the gung-ho paramilitary Fascist fucks who take dominant roles in that assault on citizens and the Constitution prefer to spend on nifty GI Joe toys, helicopters, assault weapons, night vision, etc – instead of hiring a better grade of cop, which they don’t want – they’d blow the good thing the current corrupt, semi-competent Rambo wannabes got going for themselves…
#27…Tallwookie……This story is even headlining in Turkey you numbskull. My friends all over the world are emailing me the usual **boy you Yanks like to kill** crap they send me everytime an American does something this stupid. Hell, my buddy in Ulan Bator even saw it on his local news channel. Maybe you should worry less about finding bags of coke and pay attention to the real world around you.
Christ, you spout some of the dumbest stuff sometimes.
