Seeing this emboldens me to eat that last Twinkie, just to see if my chair can do that.
So how is the chair being picked up at the end?
#2: Internal motors
NASA should take a look at this. The docking maneuvers are just about perfect, on all 4 corners, with no visible cameras, or funnels or anything to do “terminal guidance”.
Of course, by the time NASA gets around to it, we will have lost all leadership in space technology. The only reason we appear to be ahead is because of mad spending in order to show some results and justify more mad spending, but technologically we are already behind.
Just in case a leg falls off demonstration platform, lease have a human on stand by.
I would like to see if it could stand on three legs. May be have a socket near the middle on either the front or the back just in case one of the legs can not be found.
This just proves people have too much time on their hands.
Lamest. ‘Robot’. Ever.
This is the dumbest waste of time in robotics. A completely pointless end use, with absolutely zero practical derivative value.
Btw, notice how it falls apart the same way each time?
Crap.
This is the Apple iChair, and the final version will play songs while it reassembles itself (also useful for a game of musical chairs). Only $2999.95.
#8. I’ll have one of those.
Insanely funny when you think about it….
Buying a better chair, or avoiding large friends (or losing weight) may be a simpler solution, but….
Meantime, people laugh at the electric toothbrush, but many dentists will tell you that some of them are worth the money.
(If nothing else, the kids will brush longer….)
Don’t forget that the techniques used here will find application someplace else. As mentioned above, the docking method may be of some value, if nothing else.
I also see some use here for mobility devices for the disabled. Some kind of power-assisted docking, for example, to help a disabled individual pick up a tool, or a book?
Think “technology demonstration” here. Like a “concept car”….
Regards,
Stu.
#8 And in two months it will be cut to $1999 with a Ram revamp.
Can I get a four-door sedan variant?
No need to take it into the shop: just close my garage door and hope the neighbors don’t complain of the reassembly noises at 2am.
Not that I’m that bad of a driver…
It’s cool, but looks uncomfortable. I doubt I could catch a quick (?) nap in it, like I do my recliner. And under normal use, I doubt my recliner will ever collapse, even though I’m a rather large unit, myself.
1. Borg Chair.
2. If Microsoft built it, how would the BSOD present itself?
Come on Guys, this is the new Zune from MS. It’s comfortable and fixes itself IF – AND I MEAN “IF” – broken. Being a prototype, this model doesn’t play music or video yet (much like WMA # whatever). But when it comes together, watch out Steve (used to have) Jobs.

#10, Stu, As mentioned above, the docking method may be of some value, if nothing else.
I’d like to know how they managed the AI dock. Some amazing tech, most impressive (if it wasn’t remote controlled).
The Japanese built a walking robot. We built a … choke … chair.
#17, just the mental image of the walking Japanese robot contemplating the “broken” chair has made me spew coffee all over the keyboard. Darnit! 😆
A chair now, a robot sitting on a chair is next to come LOL
….and your 350 pound chair needs motors to push itself out from the dinner table too!
This is just brilliant! Definitely the best piece of chair that I have seen till date. I guess, this would be the perfect gift for my friend on this b’day 🙂
