If you are unaware of this EMO deal, here is a good mainstream look at it. Why I found this interesting is because it seems to be the hot subculture in Utah! This report is from a Utah station. Good summary for the old farts who cannot keep up with these sorts of trends. Looks like nihilism to me with a new name. The documentary was posted as humor on the College Humor site. In some meta-sense it is humor, albeit sick humor.

  1. B. Dog says:

Could it be teen angst gone slumming?

  2. jeroen says:

this is the result of a republican government: fill everyone with fear, then the weaker ones get depressed.

    and

    leave… emo… alone… :’-( 😛

  3. SN says:

The good news is that if a local news department has finally caught on, the trend has been dead for several years.

  4. Ryan says:

Local news never ceases to be hilariously out of touch.

  5. bobbo says:

and the difference between this and teen angst over the centuries and the goth subculture for the past 30 years is what?

  6. Jägermeister says:

#6 – bobbo – and the difference between this and teen angst over the centuries and the goth subculture for the past 30 years is what?

    Haircuts?

  7. andrewwi says:

the reason that this is on College Humor is because of how long it takes for the media to catch up with modern times. It would be like doing a special report on how the internet may one day change the lives of millions. Most teenagers and young adults (at least where i live) have known about “EMO” people for years.

If you’re EMO and you know it cut your wrists

If you’re EMO and you know it cry a lot

If you’re EMO and you know it write a poem

If you’re EMO and you know it wear all black

If you’re EMO and you know it
And you really want to show it
If you’re EMO and you know it try all four!

And by the way, EMO started in music, not the internet.

  8. natefrog says:

Wow. If I was any of those bands overheard in this report I would be suing for defamation of character.

    This station is clueless.

  9. Brandon says:

Myself being a teen, albeit not a hepcat, for me the term “emo” has always been a synonym for “attention-whore”. People who are so obsessed with wallowing in their own misery that they ignore the fact that they’ve been born into the best nation on the face of the earth and have every opportunity open to them. Quite pathetic really.

Also, #9, natefrog, Fall Out Boy and the rest of the bands featured in this video heavily identify themselves with the emo sub-culture, and basically suck balls. They deserve whatever they get.

  10. Angel H. Wong says:

I prefer this article on Emos:

    The Crayolas were priceless… 😀

  12. JeremyJ says:

#11 I know Death Cab for Cutie sing some really deep songs and have some dark lyrics at times, but I wouldn’t say they associate themselves with the EMO subculture. I’d say they are just decent lyricists. its not their fault that some people attach themselves to the darker songs. a lot of their songs are bright and cheery.

  13. natefrog says:

#11, Brandon: I have no clue why you think Fall Out Boy is emo. Emo is just a fucking clothing style and music preference. Paranoid “save the children!” adults are scared of it so they give it negative connotations by associating it with suicide and “evil.” People fear it, just like they fear the goths. Conform, little children! Thus, this piece of shit reporting job. I’m surprised the bottom corner of the screen didn’t read “FOX NEWS” during the report.

    From Wikipedia:

Appropriately or not, emo has been used to describe such bands as AFI, Alexisonfire, Brand New, Bright Eyes, Coheed and Cambria, Death Cab for Cutie, Fall Out Boy, From First to Last, Funeral for a Friend, Hawthorne Heights, My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, Senses Fail, Something Corporate, The Starting Line, Story of the Year, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, The Used, and Underoath.[14] The classification of bands as “emo” is often controversial. Fans of several of the listed bands have recoiled at the use of the “emo” tag, and have gone to great lengths to explain why they don’t qualify as “emo”. In many cases, the term has simply been attached to them because of musical similarities, a common fashion sense, or because of the band’s popularity within the “emo” scene, not because the band adheres to emo as a music genre.

People that actually cut themselves are messed up in the head, not emo. They need professional help. (Hell, I enjoy most of the songs on that ABC report. I guess I’m emo.)

  14. Ben Waymark says:

Anyone understand the difference between a goth and emo?

  15. undissembled says:

    #15. Go cry emo kid.

  16. DarthVCDr says:

Emos just want to be goths, but want to try to be “fresh” and “original”.

Both are about exploring the darkness, but goths (in my day, and my town) at least mostly kept to themselves unless brought into discussions/arguments. Emo kids are, like Brandon said, attention whores.
emo kid “waaa waaa.. look at me i’m so sad and everything’s so dark i cut my wrists”
goth “well you’re even more worthless than you thought, you did it wrong. Across the street to the hospital, down the road to the grave”

When I was a teen, I never had to cut myself… I was always doing stupid stuff to make myself bleed anyway (falling off stuff, scraping on door/windows/chairs…) The real problem, and I bet a study will show this is where emos come from, is how “safe” everyone makes their kids now. I bet these emo brats are the same kids that had safty fascist parents that had 3″ thick foam rubber over every pointy object in the house from birth till age 11…

  17. Palomar Jack says:

#2 > this is the result of a republican government: fill everyone with fear, then the weaker ones get depressed.

And the key word there is weak, that’s right you’re weak. And if you want to let some idiots in government decide your state of mind, that’s your problem.

You are also a friggin’ moron, you know that? Last time I checked, both Houses are controlled by ‘Crats, and the Houses are where the power is at. All a president can do as far as laws is propose them and pass or veto them. Except maybe the occasional executive order. And on that note, Clinton released the most executive orders in his first year in office, but he also released twelve in the last twenty days of his term. And if memory serves me right, Clinton was a ‘Crat. But of course, if you’d take a few minutes and actually educate yourself, you’d know these things.

As far as I can see, this Emo crap is simply self pity taken to the extreme.

“Poor babies, no one in history has ever had it as bad as you. How will you ever survive?”

BAH! Go study about what the World War II “Generation” went through, including Holocaust survivors, then tell me how bad you’ve got it, you weak-assed little pussies.

The way i see it, if these stupid-assed, spoiled, selfish little twerps want to kill themselves, fine. It’ll strengthen the gene pool as far as I’m concerned.

I’m sorry, but someone has to say these things, parents won’t, or, aren’t home enough to actually raise these brats.

Why? Because both have to work.
Why? Because taxes have been raised to insane levels.
Why? So ‘Crats get social programs that use 75% of the tax money.
Why? That’s what buys the votes that keep them in power.

So, what’s the real source of your “despair”? That’s right, self pity and ‘Crats.

    Hasta…

  18. Just Me says:

#14 A band called Death Cab for Cutie “a lot of their songs are bright and cheery” classic.

#15 “Death Cab for Cutie, Fall Out Boy, Funeral for a Friend, My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, Senses Fail”

How could anyone associate these band names with anything but sunshine and buttercups.

Ok I’m really a big Death Cab fan, saw them a bunch of time and been a Cure fan sense Robert Smith was skinny. No matter what you call it, it’s still just music. No matter how much I listen I won’t be following anyone into the dark.

    Comment by Ben Waymark — 10/4/2007 @ 11:26 pm

I know the difference (I fluctuated between goth/grunge, my step-daughter is emo…no cutting, tho). But I think a peer of my daughter’s (who’s goth) summed it up nicely in a blog item he wrote a while back (not the best poem in the universe, but he’s 15):

    *************************

    To whiny Emos everywhere…A poem!

    Hi, I’m a whiny Emo!
I think my life really sucks for me.
I whine about it anywhere I go.
    So everyone will feel pity.

I talk about cutting myself and killing you
Just to make myself sound cool
I have no real problems so I exaggerate and lie, too
    Aren’t I just a crazy fool?

I’m just some spoiled middle-class kid
Who thinks talking this way makes me cool, ya know?
I don’t have problems, but like to pretend I did
Cuz I’m just a whiny Emo.

  20. Ghazban says:

Check out this awesome Punk song called “Cheer up Emo Kid” by the band Patent Pending… It should be the song that plays when you enter their site…

  21. natefrog says:

    #17, 18;

I’m an emo kid? Even though I’m 24 and don’t own any black clothing, I guess it’s time to start cutting myself. Unless you have anything to add to the debate (such as reasons why my argument would be incorrect), politely STFU and keep your “I get off on seeing my thoughts written on the intertubes” to your own blog.

  22. Angel H. Wong says:

    #27

So far, your whining confirms it.

  23. natefrog says:

    #28;

I hate misinformation and stupidity, period.

  24. OhForTheLoveOf says:

    YAY! Let’s scare parents…

Troubled individuals have been self mutilating themselves for many centuries…

Am I to believe that Vincent Van Gough was the first Emo Painter?

Death Cab For Cutie is one of the many bands today who will be regarded as truly great in 25 years, and there are perhaps a small handful of other “emo” bands that will stand the test of time… not unlike a few bands that were emo before there was emo, like The Doors…

And if a kid wants to be inspired to acts of self destruction, he or she will have to look to bands other than Deathcab.

This report is bullshit like most local news is bullshit.

  25. natefrog says:

    #20, pedro;

Unless you’ve never used FOX NEWS as a source (which I think is highly unlikely, given your insane ideology), you can also STFU.

The point is I at least researched the matter and found citations which support my argument. Nevermind the fact that Wikipedia has been verified to be no more inaccurate than traditional encyclopedias.

  26. steelcobra says:

Honestly, I can understand the kids being drawn to the culture if they have to live in the core city of Mormonland. Anybody would be depressed by such a culture when they can see what’s going on in the rest of the world.

  27. natefrog says:

    32;

Now that’s funny. The style reminds me of Invader Zim…
