The above is one of the best headlines to something I’ve run across in a while. It’s an entry made in Scott Aaronson’s blog about what happened to him in the commercial above. Aaronson is a professor at MIT who is interested in things like quantum computing. The comments he got on the post range far and wide about copyrights, suing the bastards and more. As one commenter put it, “Sex. Plagiarism. Aussies. Quantum mechanics. Printers.” What more could you ask for in one post? We at DU applaud him!

  1. Half Moon says:

Why can’t he just be flattered that a few lines of his lecture were used to amuse millions of people? His lecture transcended the boring halls of a science university into the minds of the general populace. Perhaps, an amused girl watching that commercial will be inspired to drop her superficial dream of being the next Britney Spears and look toward to being the next Albert Einstein.

Should he get a little acknowledement? He just did. Should he get a little monetary compensation? He got his 15 minutes of fame… he should just drop it. He’s making enough salary at MIT.

  2. gtriamy says:

What!? How is using someone’s original creative content without their consent ok? Just because it’s a smart person, an educational lecture and someone who is already getting paid somewhere else doesn’t make it right. It’s his content, it should be up to him on how it is used. This sounds like the “Metallica v. Napster Kids” argument. Metallica is rich, so it’s ok to steal their music.

It should be up to whoever created the content to control how and where it is used.

  3. B. Dog says:

If he comes up with some original content in the Quantum Mechanical space, he can collect a Nobel Prize and get over the copier company copying things.

  4. Les says:

I heard somebody speaking, but I don’t remember it.

  5. hhopper says:

The comments on Scott’s site are entertaining.

  6. bill says:

“Everything is about SEX”… you can quote me on that…

If I were this guy, I would ask for a date…

  7. tallwookie says:

yup – those professors dont get laid enough, and it shows

  8. Mark T. says:

Well, it looks like the links noted above were suspended with the notice “This Account Has Exceeded Its CPU Quota”.

That makes it kinda hard to put this posting into context. Oh, well.

  9. OmarTheAlien says:

The models were hot, the dialogue stilted and boring, and I wonder if anybody paid to sit through what appears to be a less than exciting lecture. I’ve had drug flashbacks that made as much sense, and way more visually exciting.
