I bet a huge swath of US’ citizens would do poorly or even fail. Interesting list of what was changed and what’s new in the test.

New Test Asks: What Does ‘American’ Mean?

Federal immigration authorities yesterday unveiled 100 new questions immigrants will have to study to pass a civics test to become naturalized American citizens.

The redesign of the test, the first since it was created in 1986 as a standardized examination, follows years of criticism in which conservatives said the test was too easy and immigrant advocates said it was too hard.

The new questions did little to quell that debate among many immigrant groups, who complained that the citizenship test would become even more daunting. Conservatives seemed to be more satisfied.

Bush administration officials said the new test was part of their effort to move forward on the hotly disputed issue of immigration by focusing on the assimilation of legal immigrants who have played by the rules, leaving aside the situation of some 12 million illegal immigrants here.

UPDATE: Here’s the Immigration Department’s page on the new test. And here’s a pdf with a comparison of the old and new test.

  1. Jeanne says:

The question should not be if you could pass the new immigration test, but if you could pass the new immigration test if you studied.

  2. JACK says:

I don’t know if a can pass. WTF are questions?

  3. MikeN says:

So when are they going to drop bilingual ballots for voting?

  4. GigG says:

    #2 Here’s 10 of them.

  5. undissembled says:

    I failed. Deport me.

  6. Ben Waymark says:

I correctly answered seven out of ten, which I thought was good considering that I have never lived in the US. I did go to Albany once to see the Jerry Garcia Band play, and took a bus through the US on the way to Mexico…. and cross over to Washington to state a few times at Point Roberts….. oh ya, and I’ve been the airport in New Jersey and appreciated all the “welcome to the land of the free” posters that surround you as they finger print you and your wife (they seemed uninterested in finger printing my children which surprised me because if they knew my children they’d know that if anyone was going to commit an act of terrorism it’d be them…. especially the two year old….)

  7. Smith says:

What’s so tough about these questions? I believe my 9th grade history class covered all of this. That was forty years ago.

  8. Ziggie says:

I got 6. Do i have to leave now?

    Yeah. Right.

  10. James Hill says:

I bet a huge swath of illegals could get these right, too, if they actually gave a shit about our country… and didn’t see it as a big cash register.

(Yes, I know that’s a rash statement. However, this kind of story always gets put out there by those not in power… and its fun to harass them.)

  11. gquaglia says:

Aside from knowing how many are in the house of representatives, I knew them all. Easy stuff if you didn’t go through school on drugs.

  12. Danijel says:

    Can someone explain these answers:

    ▪ Any citizen can vote. (Women and men can vote.)
    ▪ A male citizen of any race (can vote).

  13. Adam S says:

Chicago Tribune listed another 10 questions (some overlapping) and made it multiple choice. I am not sure if it is really multiple choice or not. But one questions was, “Name the author of the Deceleration of Independence.” There were three answers including Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. While Jefferson was the primary author, Adams was on the committee and contributed. I don’t know if this is the Tribune’s mistake or the tests.

  14. Adam S says:

    “Can someone explain these answers:

    ▪ Any citizen can vote. (Women and men can vote.)
    ▪ A male citizen of any race (can vote). ”

Two different amendments. Although the order should be reversed because the historical order of the amendments were reversed.

  15. Cinaedh says:

I think it’s obvious George Bush and Dick Cheney were the authors of the “Deceleration of Independence”.

Did you learn about Google in high school? Or did you just skip ahead to the answers? 😉 😉 Winky-wink.

  17. Todd Anderson, III says:

I’ve also often wondered how many adult English speakers would pass a fluency exam — I listen to my fellow Americans shamelessly massacre the language every day.

  18. Smith says:

    {snicker}

    Yeah. Right.

What? They didn’t teach American history and the Constitution in your school?

This explains a lot about your posts.

  19. Mister Mustard says:

    >>What? They didn’t teach American history and the Constitution
    >>in your school?

Yep, and they taught “values” like honesty.

    >>This explains a lot about your posts.

    Yours too, Einstein.

  20. Angel H. Wong says:

“conservatives said the test was too easy and immigrant advocates said it was too hard.”

I want to see these conservatives take the test, in my experience those who demand stricter rules for other usually don’t want these rules applied to them.

The question is: Will the 9th grade kids from the USA of today know these answers?

  21. tallwookie says:

Ok – I looked at the “test” dunno how thats supposed to be difficult – I knew 98% of the answers – Guess if I was a foreigner or illegal immigrant I might not, but then those dumbshits shouldnt be allowed in our country.

and for all you close-minded liberals who want to bitch about the above paragraph, go look at how easy it is to get citizenship in some other countries – like Iceland or Norway – at least English is a global language – the same CANNOT be said for whatever language icelandic people speak – its all fuct.

Do you have pajamas with svastikas embroided on them or are you telling me they are mangis?

  23. joshua says:

My buddy just asked me all 100 questions and I didn’t miss any. Can I be President now??? 🙂

  24. Ben Waymark says:

    21. tallwookie: On the subject of dumbasses, they speak Icelandic in Icelandic in Iceland. You’d be amazed at how easy it is to look these up. Every heard of Google?

And English isn’t as much as a global language as you’d think. Certainly it’d tough to be a senior executive of any major company these without speaking English, and it’d also be hard to be an East-Indian tech support desk worker without English, but I think you’ll find that most people just speak their own language….

  25. Mister Mustard says:

    >>I want to see these conservatives take the test

If they did it on the “honor system”, rest assured they would all score 100%

    >>You’d be amazed at how easy it is to look these up. Every
    >>heard of Google?

How do you think the self-proclaimed brainiacs of American history and culture manage to score 100% 😉

  26. MikeN says:

Well looking at the full 100 questions, the only one that would have stumped me is Name one thing Benjamin Franklin is known for. None of their five answers would have made my top 5.

Then there’s this quiz that was flunked by college students. It’s 60 questions.
