First we have the protection of pedophiles, now this. So, when can we expect the nun abortion stories?
In a provocative article, an Italian medical professor argues that Pope John Paul II didn’t just simply slip away as his weakness and illness overtook him in April 2005. Intensive care specialist Dr. Lina Pavanelli has concluded that the ailing Pope’s April 2 death was caused by what the Catholic Church itself would consider euthanasia. She bases this conclusion on her medical expertise and her own observations of the ailing pontiff on television, as well as press reports and a subsequent book by John Paul’s personal physician. The failure to insert a feeding tube into the patient until just a few days before he died accelerated John Paul’s death, Pavanelli concludes. Moreover, Pavanelli says she believes that the Pope’s doctors dutifully explained the situation to him, and thus she surmises that it was the pontiff himself who likely refused the feeding tube after he’d been twice rushed to the hospital in February and March. Catholics are enjoined to pursue all means to prolong life.
The polemics come just as the Vatican again weighed in on euthanasia. The Church’s doctrinal office released a one-page document, approved by Benedict, that denounced the cutting off of food and water to patients in a vegetative state even if they would never regain consciousness. This reaffirmed John Paul’s stance in 2004 during the battle over ending artificial feeding for the severely brain-damaged Terri Schiavo, who was later taken off her feeding tube and died.
Well, based on the same evidence, and my total lack of expertise, I say the Pope joined M Teresa in glorifying gods love for us in teaching us how to suffer with dignity. The communist/humanist league must be behind this attack on his holiness.
As a hospice social worker and a practicing Catholic, it’s not a correct statement to say that Catholics are required to “pursue all means to prolong life”. If someone is actively dying, there is no requirement to insert a feeding tube; in fact, it’s pointless, as the body won’t process the substance, which will often stay in the stomach causing the patient distress. Or, as another example, I could refuse an organ transplant even though it would result in my death, since that is an extraordinary means and may have a more negative impact, say if I bankrupt my family to pay for it. I don’t know what the situation was for John Pau II or why he refused the feeding tube, possible felt he was able to take nourishment on his own (a very common attitude), or was aware he was actively dying.
If John Paul Bush found out of this nonsense, the Vatican would have been placed on notice.
Pope Bush has decreed that prolonging of a vegetative state or silent suffering falls within his domain as President, Pope and Ruler of the Free World.
“her own observations of the ailing pontiff on television”
Becasue we all know doctors only need to see someone on TV to make a diagnosis.
“Nun abortion” tales – start back around the Dark Ages – peak production for the holiness brigade. No end of stories since then of contractors tearing down old nunneries and finding beaucoup tiny skeletons.
There were decades when nuns were in-house hookers. Part of their job description.
Good american catholics always disagree with repeated papal pronouncements, yet still consider themselves good catholics. I wonder how many “real” catholics there are in GOUSA, the world?
Not to get in a flame war, but Erik, don’t believe that stuff on sites like angelfire or what you read in Chick comics. Most of that stuff about convent debauchery is word-for-word from Maria Monk (I have one of her books, circa 1880), who made a living giving anti-Catholic lectures during the nativist, Know-Nothing era. Sorry – hospice social worker, practicing Catholic, and very well-educated former nun 🙂
7–So, there in fact was no convent debauchery as referenced in Shakespeare, Luther, and tirades against the Borgias? Or should such issues of fact be denied because they are anti-catholic?
During the Terri Schiavo affair, people on this blog ridiculed Bill Frist for diagnosing based on video, now they put up posts of the same thing.
8-10–stop being so knee-jerk. Original Post states opinion is based on 3-4 things only including, not based on, tv observations. TV is perfectly fine for observing that someone is old, weak, not eating.
Very different to diagnose organic brain damage from a video. Though I have to add its funny to have an actually CT Scan and biopsy showing not much more than brain stem was left in Schiavo and last I heard Frist was still claiming she could have benefitted from rehab==I guess just like all the other religious nutters could benefit from and for the same condition?

“During the Terri Schiavo affair, people on this blog ridiculed Bill Frist for diagnosing based on video, now they put up posts of the same thing.”
On top of that, I’m convinced they’re only doing it to irritate you personally, so give ’em hell!
Amen, Lynn.
And MikeN – thank you. These anti-religious whack jobs love to point out inconsistencies in the Bible but refuse to account for their own hypocrisy.
This site becomes pure tabloid on Sundays, and as such totally worthless, so we shouldn’t even respond to this stuff. I really should stop rubber-necking here on weekends. Shame on me.
13–tkane, right you are. Shame on you. Nothing in this post about the bible. Nothing about hypocrisy in the thread. Those who refuse to admit their own hypocrisy when pointed out to them are just following the Golden Rule–whats wrong with that?
Good demonstration of the fact you can’t even win your own straw man arugment. Now get back to that good book of yours.
So, now we base fact on “own observations on television?” If that’s the liberal barometer, then we explore strange new worlds, ghosts really do exist, and wrestling is a legitimate sport!
Come on, “dvorak.org/blog” is your obsessive hatred with Christianity gone this low?
15–Reading Deficit?? See post 11 above with further specifics: She bases this conclusion on her medical expertise and her own observations of the ailing pontiff on television, as well as press reports and a subsequent book by John Paul’s personal physician.
Bonus Round–when is posting someone’s expert opinion based on multiple sources of information “a fact” rather than just her opinion?
Bonus Round–when is telling the truth a “hatred of Christianity?”==oops, yea, I guess you win that one.
yeah right
just another stupid post from Uncle Dave, why even bother to comment on it…

What’s a pope?

Tsk tsk, el Bobo. I would have expected better from you.
That is not necessarily being Euthanized. This practice goes on all the time in medicine. A patient has the RIGHT to say NO to a feeding tube and that is perfectly within the legal bounds of medicine as well as the patient’s rights.
How could you actually believe that anyone in the Vatican could do such a thing, knowing as an eternal verity that the Lord would call His mouthpiece home the very instant it would be right to do so, and not one attosecond earlier or later – what with Him knowing everything that’s ever going to happen and all…?
Rescheduling His Popishness’ devinely predetermined checkout time evinces a hypocritical lack of faith in God’s infallibility, in my book.
…like that’s something new…
#1. I love how ‘humanist’ is supposedly a dirty word. those bastards and their Enlightenment!
#20. You can thank atheist Michail Gorbachev for the fall of the Wall, since he was the one who gave the go-ahead.
of course, he got some encouragement from non-churchgoing, horoscope-following Ronald Reagan, but he was the one who pulled the trigger.
#5, erik
Damn I hate it when the Right Wing Nuts pull this crap, I don’t think anyone else should either. Lying for something just to bring ridicule or denigrate a class is plain wrong.
There is no evidence Nuns were ever “in-house hookers”. That would be totally against their faith and beliefs, both which were very devoutly followed by most up until maybe 250 years ago.
Convents were often places of refuge for unwed mothers. Many Convents also were primitive hospitals. If the babies were still born or died in infancy, they would be buried in the convent cemetery. There would be no need to hide bodies inside walls. Besides, that would smell and attract vermin.
Most of these stories came from Protestant accusations of Catholic practices and anti-Catholic bigotry.
Now, if you could post some good research that refutes what I studied and researched back in my college days I would be more than willing to apologize and admit being wrong.
#26. I actually recall JP2’s patronage of the Polish resistance and his adamant anti-communism. Like most humanists, I was ecstatic when the wall came down. However, whether JP2 actually helped cause it is debatable. Communism was so rotten to the core that any attempt to reform it by taking the totalitarian clamps off of its victims (such as Glasnost and Perestroika) was likely to result in its destruction.
By the way, the whole ‘pregnant nun’ stories are OLD news…there’s a convent in NJ which was well known as the place where they were all sent until they gave birth. One can only assume that the practice still takes place in some cases, and in others more immediate procedures are performed.
# 29 – funny, I am New Jersey born and bred, was in the convent for 15 years and have hundreds of num friends in many congregations throughout NJ yet I never heard of the the “well known” NJ convent etc. Maybe I need to read “Weird NJ” more carefully.
I have little problem with those who post views different than mine, if they have an argument to make. If there is a claim then be prepared to back it up. That is what debate and discussion is all about.
The posting of unfounded crap, such as #5 and #29 does not lead to discussion. These are the posts that should be edited for content. I find this to be far more objectionable.
#27 …. However, whether JP2 actually helped cause it is debatable. ….
This just shows how little you know about that subject.
Its great that she rests her credibility as a doctor on “press reports, news and a book”. If she was in the US this would have been a total career suicide move.
#31 – bravo, Mr. Fusion.
