Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf — a key U.S. ally — is less popular in his own country than al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, according to a poll of Pakistanis conducted last month by an anti-terrorism organization.
Additionally, nearly three-fourths of poll respondents said they oppose U.S. military action against al Qaeda and the Taliban inside Pakistan, according to results from the poll conducted by the independent polling organization Terror Free Tomorrow.
“We have conducted 23 polls all over the Muslim world, and this is the most disturbing one we have conducted,” said Ken Ballen, the group’s head. “Pakistan is the one Muslim nation that has nuclear weapons, and the people who want to use them against us — like the Taliban and al Qaeda — are more popular there than our allies like Musharraf.”
According to poll results, bin Laden has a 46 percent approval rating. Musharraf’s support is 38 percent. U.S. President George W. Bush’s approval: 9 percent.
These are the folks who are helping us win the War on Terror?

The so-called president of Pakistan led a coup in 1999 to gain power. Then set up phony elections to appears as a good guy to the international community and finally went all in with Herr Bush.
We should never have had dealings with the man and we SHOULD have kept relations with the Afghanis after the USSR pulled out. Bu that is what you get when you don’t care what happens to people (allies) that you use.

I don’t think recent approval ratings are even relevant since Bush ruined America’s reputation abroad while everyone was supporting him.

by the way being a pakistani i think musharraf is worst than bin laden for pakistan or atleast at par with him, he always thinks like bin laden what he is doing is right, he doesnt bother to listen to court orders, 50 people died just because he or his cronies wanted to distrupt a rally in karachi, he killed an 80 year old stubborn politician who just wanted the rights for his province because he didnt like him.

This month’s National Geographic has a nice in depth story about Pakistan. I gather that the people in the part close to India are nice and moderate, but in the West, there are” al Qaeda fighters who prowl the western mountains of Waziristan, butchering anyone suspected of being an American spy.” I guess you’ll have to be careful if you’re trying to get that tasty $25,000,000 for bin Laden’s head.

The dead usually poll well. I suspect that the loss of his leadership is what is making the surge so successful. Al Qaeda is busy imposing sharia law, and this has switched many Iraqis towards the US. I think OBL would have told them to wait until the Americans are gone.
To understand the Bush Regime, here are some facts.
1) Clinton embargoed Pakistan in 1999 after the Musharaff coup.
2) Bush immediately resumed armed transfers to Pakistan after taking power in 2001
3) Pakistani scientist A.Q. Khan stole nuclear secrets from Europe, sold them to North Korea, got missile technology from North Korea and turned around and sold that to Iran. The CIA could have arrested Khan but didn’t do so because Bush didn’t want it to happen. To this day Bush refuses to claim that Khan is a criminal. Khan is considered a hero in Pakistan.
Bush considers Saudi Arabia and Pakistan “allies in the war on terror”, even though Pakistan armed North Korea and Iran, and Saudi Arabia is the main funder of sunni islamic terror groups in the world, including Al Qaeda.
No wonder we’re losing.
Khan could just be lying to build Bush’s case for war.
