Former Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback Michael Vick said that he will take full responsibility for his actions after entering a guilty plea to a federal judge this morning acknowledging his involvement in organized dogfighting.

During today’s press conference Vick apologized for lying to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Atlanta Falcons’ owner Arthur Blank and coach Bobby Petrino, as well as to his teammates. He also apologized repeatedly to any young people who have been following his case and may have looked up to him.

His experience has helped him find religion. “Through this situation I found Jesus and I’m going to ask himself for forgiveness and turn myself over to God.”

The Jesus-rehab ploy might even get him a gig in the NFL, again, after he exits the slammer. Say, with the Indianapolis Colts.

So I am supposed to believe that someone who has it in them to pour gas on a dog and light it on fire or grab it and hold it underwater until it’s dead has (in the course of one month) completely realized how wrong he was and how terrible a thing it was. BS!

This piece of garbage should get life. I really don’t care what he has to “say” about things now.

Sorry it took so long to respond but unfortunately my lousy life intervened.

“I’m just curious as to why Vick, or anyone else, does such a stupid thing. Lets say I’m 100% correct. Doesn’t make it less stupid or less culpable.”

I once arrested a guy for following a stripper around every place she went. He didn’t do anything to her, didn’t threaten her, didn’t harm her in any way, he just followed her around and let her see him every place she went. It really freaked her out.

When I asked him why he was doing this horrible thing, he was honestly baffled by my question and it turned out he was really an innocuous, gentle person who’d never hurt anyone in his life (I checked).

It turned out, in his culture, following a woman around and letting her see you all the time was an acceptable method of courtship. Women in his part of the world understood and appreciated the activity (I checked). I ended up giving the guy a lecture, explaining it to the sweet stripper and she agreed not to charge him.

To answer your question, I think this is a cultural thing. I don’t believe Mr. Vick actually thought he was doing anything wrong, although he knew it was illegal. Also, for all of his life to this point, Mr. Vick has been allowed to do anything he wants and to get away with anything he wanted to do because he was the best damned football player anyone had ever seen.

If you combine the culture, the life experience and the fact gambling is sort of a victimless crime (the victim is usually the gambler) I think it makes him less stupid and less culpable – but I doubt the American courts will see it that way.

I also think this sort of discussion should take place in The Cage Match Forums, where there’s more time and more breathing room.

    Whew! I’m out of breath!

#30 You are equating dogs to people, you nut job. If you want to be outraged at Vick, you should be 100X more outraged at how the Pat Tillman case was handled or at women who have had abortions, but somehow I think you are hypocritically pro-choice.

#29 Your comments show me more of the whacko groups prosecutors were aiming at. “There are few animals that kill just for the pleasure of it”. Oh really? I had a well fed cat that killed chipmunks, mice, lizards, and roaches just for the hell of it, and Roy (of Sigfried and) got attacked by his domesticated tiger.

“Vick may have bought these animals, but he had no right to kill or maim them in the way he and his friends did.” Really? Let’s be consistent here. Do fat people have the right to raise, kill, and eat cows, pigs, and chickens? They don’t really need to eat said animals.

Your telling people what they can do with animals is hardly a liberal matter. You want government sticking its nose into people’s domestic affairs and telling people what they can and cannot do with their friggin’ animals, and I am a liberal?

And finally, who told the kids that Vick killed animals and did the public lynch job on him? The government did. Vick never went out in public and said he killed dogs and it was okay. Your appeal to “saving the children” is another liberal tactic.

It just amazes me when the government sets somebody out for a public lynching like it did Vick and how many people just go for the throat. There is not one person on this blog who has not used products that are the result of the killing of animals, and the posts reek of hypocrisy. Vick broke the law and deserves to be punished, but the outrage of people is just way, way out of proportion to the crime.

“It’s humans(and in your case I’ll use the term loosely) like you that make me prefer the company of animals.” If you have a dog, chances are you are feeding him the flesh of other animals. So try to be consistent and instead of feeding (i.e. bribing) your animal to be a friend, don’t feed said animal and then see how much it enjoys your company.

As an owner of a beautiful German Shephard and an equally spiritied Mini-Schnauzer, I was really upset initially with Mr. Vick’s decisions. Then I thought that in some countries dogs are domesticated, farmed and eaten as food. Wow! Talk about terrible! Then I thought, what about the animals we in the U.S.A. domesticate, farm and eat. Who is standing up for the plight of the helpless chickens and cows…what about the pigs and turkeys? Yeah, yeah, I know what you are going to say…it was just a thought anyway.
