Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, has resigned. A senior administration official said he would announce the decision later this morning in Washington.

Earlier this month, at a news conference, Mr. Bush dismissed accusations that Mr. Gonzales had had stonewalled or misled a congressional inquiry. “We’re watching a political exercise,” Mr. Bush said. “I mean, this is a man who has testified, he’s sent thousands of papers up there. There’s no proof of wrong.”

As recently as Sunday afternoon, Mr. Gonzales was denying through his press spokesman, Brian Roehrkass, that he intended to leave.

Maybe he didn’t remember he gave Bush his resignation – on Friday?

    HALLE-MOTHERFUCKING-LUJAH!!!!

  2. Joe says:

    Cheney’s next, hopefully.

  3. Ian says:

    “We’re watching a political exercise,”

    Is that another bushism?

    Did he mean

    “We’re watching a political execution” ?
    OR
    “We’re watching a political exorcism”

I’m going to guess as a non religious Brit, that he meant the 2nd

  4. Tanqueray says:

Yay finally another nail on the bush administration coffin.

  5. grog says:

what’s so great about the man resigning? just like with karl rove, bertie’s resignation guarantees that no one will be brought to justice over bushco’s shady dealings.

i can already hear bush’s apologist’s calling any attempt to get gonzoles or rove to come clean on the bush camp’s attempt to politicize the justice department “old news” and/or “sour grapes”

so there’s no victory here, just the rats abandoning the lame duck ship

  6. MikeN says:

Any chance Ashcroft will come back?

  7. MikeN says:

Does this mean media liberals will stop trying to invent perjury charges against him?

  8. RTaylor says:

Rats leaving a sinking ship? Who the Hell would want to go through a Senate confirmation hearing for a year term?

  9. Chad says:

    HAHAHAHAHHAHA!!!!

#8 No kidding the rats are leaving the ship…
#7 Don’t worry, I’m sure a full pardon is on the way December 2008 for Gonzales and Rove anyways.

Maybe Harriet Myers is will finally get that political rain check cashed in?

I’m sure she’s willing to break the law however they want her to by now.

  10. Thug says:

    Fucking liberals.

  11. grog says:

#7 you comment is so predictable, in fact i predicted something remarkably similar in #5! your comment was right on cue!

  12. Greg Allen says:

    “Gonzales Shacked, Stripped and Waterboarded”

    wouldn’t even be justice.

This weasel typifies the arrogance, corruption, immorality and obsessive secrecy of this administration but he’s only one small part and his leaving will not change a thing. We need to cut out the whole rotten bunch before they ruin the whole country.

  13. Awake says:

Is there anyone in the Executive branch that is a positive entity to that branch of the government?

Here we have a man that was essentially the ‘consiglieri’ to the ‘Capo de tuti Capo’, becoming what is essentially the chief of police, being made responsible for supervising anti-mafia activities… while his boss is the Mafia head.

Now it’s up to the congress to find a person that can fulfill the Attorney General position with some kind of honor, which Alberto Gonzales certainly does not have. Although they do not nominate, they certainly should reject until someone of honor and independence can be put in that position… even if it takes until the seating of a new president.

Name ONE person in the current executive branch that has turned out to be a positive force for the American people. Nobody! Not a single person has put the interests of America ahead of the interests of “the family” or the political party.

Every member of the Bush administration has turned out to be a “turd blossom”, with poison ivy being what blossoms out of those turds.

  14. Rabble Rouser says:

Rumor has it that he’s resigning “to spend more time with his family.”

  15. Dallas says:

And we thought the Iraqi government is a mess.

Britain ! We need you !! We need you and an international coalition of free nations to restore our democracy and civil liberties.

  16. Sounds The Alarm says:

#14 – we’ll do just fine by ourselves, as long as we all vote.

If we don’t bother to vote; to take our political future into our hands; to make the functionaries realize who is really boss, then we don’t deserve to be rescued.

  17. Nth of the 49th says:

#14 re: Britain ! We need you !!

???? What you don’t have enough government surveillance already?

You need more cameras watching your every move?

  18. Cinaedh says:

On Saturday night, Gonzales was contacted by his press spokesman to ask how the department should respond to inquiries from reporters about rumors of his resignation, and Gonzales told the spokesman to deny the reports.

White House spokesmen also insisted on Sunday that they did not believe that Mr. Gonzales was planning to resign.

Bald faced liars to the bitter end!

  19. Mr. Fusion says:

It is too late for Gonzales to resign. Once he becomes charged with contempt of Congress, he can kiss his law license goodbye. Just because he has resigned is no reason Congress should not push for his indictment.

His one possible saving act would be to appear before Congress, apologize for lying, come clean, and tell the truth. Of course he wouldn’t be offered any plum Republican jobs after that but without his license he couldn’t be employed by any pricey law firms anyway.

It will also be expected Bush will pardon him for any crimes if any US Attorney tries to investigate let alone press ahead with a indictment.

  20. Higghawker says:

What I worry about is none of these people are every held accountable which means the next President will inherit all these powers prior Presidents never had or used.

  21. mark says:

I cant think of a better way to start a Monday morning.

  22. ECA says:

When a person is placed in charge of a group, and he CANT ANSWER about the group….WHY is he in charge?

Another one bites the big one…
BUT, we still didnt get any answers from this ASS.

  23. Obvious1 says:

Has Gonzales really resigned, or is he lying about that too?

  24. grog says:

#23 it isn’t lying if you forget everything!
“no sir, i do not recall writing that letter of resignation”

  25. MikeN says:

Wow, contempt of Congress. Only he didn’t lie about anything, so they can forget about the perjury charges. How he loses his law license is beyond me.

  26. Mister Mustard says:

    >>How he loses his law license is beyond me.

How about “gross incompetence”? Does that work for ya?

  27. Cinaedh says:

“How he loses his law license is beyond me.”

You’re right, he should keep his law license.

He acted in exactly the manner most people would expect a lawyer to act and he followed all the lawyer rules invented by lawyers for lawyers.

  28. Angel H. Wong says:

    #16

I think he wants a nation that doesn’t give a damn wether you have good teeth or not.

  29. bobbo says:

    Every perjury case proceeds thusly:

Q–Tell us what happened re X.
    A–Blah, Blah.

Perjury holds when the Answer is not believed. This can of course include “I don’t remember.” Just like scooter boy and any other lying sack of shit who has just figured out how to make the perjury charge 10% harder to stick. Thats all.
