Jose Carranza, an illegal immigrant from Peru, was indicted twice this year: 31 counts surrounding the alleged sexual assault of a child, and nine stemming from a bar fight.
But federal immigration officials hadn’t heard of him until Thursday, when he was charged in the execution-style shooting deaths of three Newark college students.
“We certainly would have been inclined to place him in a removal proceeding, how ever we came across him,” said Marc Raimondi, spokesman for United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “Given that he is alleged to have committed a very serious offense against a child, that would have put him at the top of our list.”
New Jersey is among the places where local authorities aren’t required to check the immigration status of someone arrested, and some critics want that changed.

Why should the police check on whether illegal immigrants are legal? This creates problems for everyone, since by definition you would have to check up on everyone, and if there’s a way to tell the difference, it means that everyone has to register with the government, have papers provign their legality etc.

There is no such thing as an “illegal immigrant”. There are “immigrants”, who have done the paperwork, etc. and are here legally and there are “illegal aliens”. The especially important word is “illegal”. They’re criminals, get them out of here. Guys like this asshat you can take the extra step of flying back to where they came from and dropping them off – – without bothering to land the plane first.
As for real immigrants, we need to make learning English, dropping their crappy foreign culture, and assimilating a requirement of immigration or they can go back where they came from too.
