Jose Carranza, an illegal immigrant from Peru, was indicted twice this year: 31 counts surrounding the alleged sexual assault of a child, and nine stemming from a bar fight.
But federal immigration officials hadn’t heard of him until Thursday, when he was charged in the execution-style shooting deaths of three Newark college students.
“We certainly would have been inclined to place him in a removal proceeding, how ever we came across him,” said Marc Raimondi, spokesman for United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “Given that he is alleged to have committed a very serious offense against a child, that would have put him at the top of our list.”
New Jersey is among the places where local authorities aren’t required to check the immigration status of someone arrested, and some critics want that changed.
I live in a county in New Mexico where illegal immigrants are 15% of the population. Local politicians made it illegal – for the Police Department to check on the immigration status of anyone arrested!

Mr Fusion the first Immigration Quota was passed in the mid 1800s to limit the influx of Japanese into the west. At the time the US were not on good relations with the Japanese.
We also had many people that wanted to kick the Irish back out to Ireland. One of which was a President. The fear of Immigrants goes way way back in our country’s history. If it wasn’t slaves and natives it was immigrants.
The issue we have today is that the WAY people can legally imigrate is screwed up. And that we have no teeth in our government to fine, seize property, shut down and imprison businessmen for hiring those people here illegally.
Despite all of this, the matter still remains…. it does not matter if a legal/illegal alien or native born citizen commited a crime. It still would have happened in some way, somewhere else by someone else. People are harmed every friggin minute in this country. And not all of those harmed are from illegal aliens.
And if we REALLY want to split hairs… we are ALL immigrant-desendents on this planet, unless you are living in Somalia and Eithiopia.
Everyone else immigrated from there.
