“Why would anyone want to screw little ol’ me?!”

Inquirer – Thursday 09 August 2007:

Here’s the thing. DX10 hardware – such as the GeForce 8800 or the Radeon 2900 – won’t work with the new 10.1 features. The 0.1 revision requires completely new hardware for support, thus royally cheesing off many gamers who paid top whack for their new hardware over the last few months on the basis of future game compatibility.

We suspect that the spec is likely to be ill-received. Not only does it require brand new hardware, immediately creating a miniscule sub-set of DX10 owners, but it also requires Vista SP1, and also requires developer implementation.

  1. Gasbag says:

So whats new Microsoft screws us again. Think I buy a Mac now.

  2. Mike says:

Thats a real bugger, but I was thinking about upgrading my ‘old’ 8800GTS before too long anyhow, this just gives me legitimate justification to do so 🙂

  3. gquaglia says:

Oh well, get a game console then.

  4. ECA says:

What I find ABIT Upset about…
Is that 10.1 is ALMOSt the same as 10…
10 had options to turn certain things ON..for the game companies..
10.1 YOU HAVE TO have ALL the options, otherwise it wont work.
I THINk the game companies are going to be PISSED more then the gamers.
Thats what was explained on DL.TV..

Im wondering if Open GL will work in vista? OR has MS totally BANNEd OGL…

  5. jlm says:

Time for OPENGL to take over again, it may not be quite as good as directX, but it can run on any OS

  6. Lauren the Ghoti says:

    Ah, pedro?

As I told you on that ancient thread over there yesterday, it is, and has always been ‘the Intel / M$ Axis of Evil that deliberately ups the ante to keep forcing Windows users to keep buying hardware. Billyboy makes sure certain Windows ‘features’ require Intel’s latest chips’ Well, that also goes for vid cards.

I ALSO pointed out that my ORIGINAL, UNMODIFIED, 1999 350MHz G3 RUNS THE LATEST VERSION OF OS X. Funny how you can just keep repeating lies as if you never learned anything different.

Honestly, pedro; as I say, after we give you an enema, we can bury what’s left in a shoebox!

  7. soundwash says:

i havent been paying attention to who MS’s s in bed with currently or the status of the hardware industry…

however, on the surface, this looks like a ploy to simply sell more hardware and further stimulate chip sales of all types..

all the spec seems to do is “garuntee” that current hardware will have a harder time rendering because everything is on, including AA…

i seriously doubt they this was the only way they could approach whatever reason 10.1 was formed.. i’d also wager that they new about the “need” for this revision before they released 10.0.

-desperate gasps from a monolithic company completely missing the ball, again.

  8. Awake says:

It’s always funny to hear ‘early adopters’ whine about how their brand spanking new hardware becomes obsolete in the first year that they own it… specially when they didn’t get to use it at all because there was no software available that even supported the earlier spec.

Next whine on the horizon (Christmas?): First run iPhone buyers that don’t have hardware support for 3G and hence have utterly obsolete phones that nobody will want as soon as Apple releases the ‘new and improved’ version. They will be ashamed to be seen with the current model because it will make then look ‘old’ and unfashionable.

If you ‘upgraded’ to a DX10 card this early, you get no pity from me that your expensive ‘early adopter’ device is not quite up the final spec that ended up being used.

  9. Deinonych says:

    From the article:

But these gamers shouldn’t fret too much – 10.1 adds virtually nothing that they will care about and, more to the point, adds almost nothing that developers are likely to care about.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

  10. iGlobalWarmer says:

Anyone who buys a PC to run games deserves what they get.

  11. Simba says:

#!. So whats new Microsoft screws us again. Think I buy a Mac now.

Typical lobotmized iTard thinking….go buy a mac, see if any game works without running emulation of windows.

This is completely sensationalist reporting and am looking forward for Dvoraks iTards to offer a retraction tomorrow.

  12. steelcobra says:

Well, looks like I’ll be running my BFG Geforce 7900 GT OC 512MB for a little while longer then.

  13. Tanqueray says:

One more update that you don’t need, oh well.

  14. TIHZ_HO says:

Back from a business trip…first thing I do is check out this site – never fails to entertain! Like the following…LOL

#8 LTG: I ALSO pointed out that my ORIGINAL, UNMODIFIED, 1999 350MHz G3 RUNS THE LATEST VERSION OF OS X.

Ah Lauren, do you actually ready what you type? What does that prove other than according to you the CURRENT Mac line up is a waste of $$$$$$$$!! LOL! And what hardware options would you have anyway? A new mouse?

Really I want to know what is so special? PCs do that as well – maybe you didn’t know that.

I had an old PIII 550mhz, 128m x 133mhz memory (Circa 1998 OEM Win98) running Windows XP sp2 for the longest time as mainly network storage until the power supply quit. It wasn’t a speed daemon but it was a happy camper for office apps.

Hey, Lauren the Ghoti….want to impress? Try doing my 10 point Mac “Fear Factor” challenge…if you dare.

  15. moss says:

TIHZ-whatever just doesn’t read English well, I guess. The answer to pedro concerned an out and out lie about hardware.

Pedro, I spent over 2 decades with OS other than Apple. I’m certainly qualified to evaluate the 2 Mini’s in the house – 1 PPC, 1 Intel – and they run exactly the same software.

Debating software/hardware performance is useful, occasionally productive. But, the poor buggers who make a religion of it are as laughable and futile as the religionists who attempt to justify their crutch with junk science.

  16. RSchewe says:

    Screw video games.

Why is everything with a PC so video game centric? Get an XBox and play it on a nice big 60 inch True HD 1080p TV.

Anything that you can only play on a PC and not a console is for nerds.

If you gotta spend that much on a PC to supe it up and spend that much time playing games on it, you need to get out more.

There is something OUTSIDE called life. Experience it.

…and for the Mac bashers. Stop being such MS-fanboys.

  17. TIHZ_HO says:

#17 Moss – No, I got it – I wasn’t continuing with pedro’s line. LTG seemed to be extolling the virtues of old Macs that can run OS X like it is something special.

BTW I can read English well, I can even speak it too – gawrsh!! BYW, “OS” should be in a plural form. 😉

    Cheers

  18. TIHZ_HO says:

I have a lot of TYPOs though LOL!! BTW not BYW!

    Cheers!

“LTG seemed to be extolling the virtues of old Macs that can run OS X like it is something special.”

No, I was pummeling pedro with reality by disintegrating his fantasy that Macs go obsolete faster than PCs. I simply let him know that, as per usual, he’s full of it, since a Pentium 300 (not a PII, PIII, Itanium, Xeon or any other goddamn thing), which is the contemporary of my G3/350, cannot run the latest, most demanding version of Windows, Vista Pro w/ Aero. And it can’t. Which makes his “Mac early obsolescence” schtick yet another denial of reality, something he’s well-known for. 🙂

pedro!! Just talkin’ about you, d0oD! Whatta co-inky-dink, eh?

“Name a card or external hardware from that same era that still works on a current mac? Let me help you with that: None.”

I see you’re still smokin’ those ‘shrooms. I’ve got an ancient 8×10 Wacom ADB tablet plugged into my dual G5; apparently it hasn’t read the same propaganda leaflets you crib from, buddy, since it perversely insists on working just fine, even though it predates my prehistoric G3… Oh, I had to buy a $6 ADB-to-USB adapter. Big whoop. No driver installation, it just works from when it’s connected, like just about any othr Mac peripheral. Something you PC fanboiz have always fantasized about, Plug & Play that actually works…

Tell ya what; why don’t you name one peripheral that can’t be used on a current Mac? Just one, don’t strain yourself…

  20. Lauren the Ghoti says:

Incidentally, maybe one of you PC guys can tell me – is installing DirectX still a one-way, irrevocable street? Are they still doing that “once you install it, you can’t revert” shit? I always saw that as another dirty game, since there has never been any conceivable excuse for an installer than doesn’t log what files are replaced / added / deleted, and archive the old ones and therefore is able to easily reverse the install… Correct me if I’m wrong…

  21. traaxx says:

DL.TV said that 10.1 was backward compatable, it’s just that version 10 cards won’t be able to use the 10.1 instructions. That’s no different than when version 10 came out and version 9 card couldn’t implement their instructions.

The real question should be what was so messed up with version 10 that they came out with version 10.1, if it was negligent then maybe MS should payout a little more to compensate Nvidia and anyone that bought a DX10 card.

This is what comes of being an early adopter, bless their greedy little techno bent hearts and their consistently empty hearts. More and more it seems it’s better to be at least one off the techno edge if not two or three generations off of it. This of course should be good for manufacturers, but it’s their fault.

  22. Mr. Fusion says:

    #8, Lauren,

I’m not taking sides in this debate. Having declared that, however, this is a classic.

Honestly, pedro; as I say, after we give you an enema, we can bury what’s left in a shoebox!

Nothing personal pedro, you’re a good guy and all, but damn that is a good put down.

  23. RSchewe says:

    Hehe. Pedro, Pedro, Pedro.

    1. I don’t own a Mac.
    2. You are an MS-Fanboy
    3. Who cares about games that much?
    4. Hi res only does so much on a small screen. (Which will never be close to a be as big as a High Def TV).
    5. Don’t be grumpy.
    6. Vista sucks. (I stuck with XP)
    7. Get out more

    Have a nice day.

  24. Mike Voice says:

#21 Did you read the one about mac stopping support of the mini’s? I bet you haven’t. Here, let me help you:
    http://www.i4u.com/article9142.html
    http://tinyurl.com/2yueh6

Why would you possibly be posting those links on Aug 12th, when Apple updated the minis to have Core 2 Duo, and slightly-larger drives, on Aug 7th??

  25. Lauren the Ghoti says:

Mike Voice – I’m not altogether certain pedro appreciates people exposing his trolling techniques… 🙂

  26. GregA says:

    @22,

First on your plug and play question… I haven’t had an issue in some time with plug and play… On my POS terminals I plug all sorts of devices into the USB… Omni directional laser scanners, touch screen monitors, customer displays, scales ,receipt printers ,hard drives, Joysticks, usb microphone head phone combos, and digital cameras(these require a driver and software suite if you want to access anything more than the pictures from the computer, like remotely take a picture or access the zoom features of the camera).

One of my side projects used a USB digital and analog IO interface with 10 amp relays. That did require a driver install..

Other than that, the only time I ever install a driver is when I upgrade the video card, from the main board integrated video card.

As I understand people who upgrade their sound card (audiophile voodoo magic) also need to install drivers.

I find your statement ironic, because currently the only thing holding me back from buying an iMac is the lack if integrated sdram card reader. Otherwise Im there in spite of the Jay Leno Chin that features prominantly on iMacs. They even got rid of the apple key on the fancy keyboard for me:)

    @23,

You know, I have never encountered a case where I would ~want~ to uninstall a version of directx. I didn’t even realize that it wasn’t possible until you pointed it out just now. Time for an acronym that I just learned the other day. PIBKAC. Problem Is Between Keyboard And Chair.

Perhaps you could enlighen us as to ~why~ you would want to uninstall directx?

    @24,

They have released a new version about once a year for almost as long as I can remember now. So I don’t think there is anything particularly new here. As 10.1 isn’t out yet, and wont come out until sp1, nothing new here at all…

Leave it to the open source and mac community to try and spin a new feature as a liability.

  27. ECA says:

    13,
No retraction, as its been reported on Many sites..

    18,
and What did WOW start on…How many Mods for WOW, that work on the console? HOw long until they STOP making programs that WORK on the console? How much you willing to PAY for your NEXT console??
AND you LIKE BACKING MS and SONY??

    23,
After Version 9.0 of DX, its one way…you cant backtrack without SOME SERIOUS reprogramming..

    24…YEP..
Iv warned many about ‘BEING the first on the Block’.
I show’d one that IF he waits 4-6 months from a console release, he can buy 2 games insted of 1, FOR THE SAME PRICE…

  28. GregA says:

    #32,

Wow, I gotta disagree. Since I got my xbox 360 my pc gaming time has dropped to zero. And I gotta say, It has been nice. I haven’t had this much fun gaming since I purchased mechwarrior for my 286-25 all those years ago. I even have a EBGames fanboy card, and sell my games when I am done with them and buy new games with the credit.

From the people I talk to in the scene, people who use only microsoft products, the biggest barrier to Vista adoption has been the XBox. The gamers don’t see what Vista offers them over their xbox, so they don’t upgrade from xp.

The only area in which xbox games suffer over their pc equivalents is in MMORPG. I don’t think the xbox will ever make much inroads there, but it has nothing to do with the technical capabilites of the xbox. It is the lean forward vs lean back gaming experience. People get on the xbox, then they play for a couple of hours, then they do something else. While on WOW, at high levels you are looking at some quests that take 18-24 hours to complete before you can log off and take a break.

    I don’t see the problem…

  29. Lauren the Ghoti says:

If I personally played anything other than the Myst series, the various Sims and Tomb Raiders, I’m sure I’d be more critical of the Mac gaming situation…

Hey don’t feel bad, PC gaming sucks, and anyone who will bitch about the cost of a mac computer, then talk about PC gaming is a liar or and idiot or both.

The reason I switched to the Xbox for game is this. In January I wanted to play the latest splinter cell game, double agent. I pop the dvd in the drive, and whammo, refuses to play because I don’t have the latest omega graphics card. I tell myself, fine, I’ll go get a card that supports that feature.

I start looking at cards… The minimal card that will run the game is $200, it is some ati card. The salesperson says he would would get the geforce card. and Gasp… $300 AND my computer would need a new powersupply. Well fuck, how much is the new power supply? That fucker was special order, $100.

Ok, are you following me here? I am out almost $500 and guess what the game works!! woo hoo. I have fun play the game and move on with my life. About half of my time investment in Double agent was building a computer that can run it(I actually don’t care about the financial cost that much).

Then comes early march. My wife gets me an xbox for birthday. Woohoo! Having the time of my life. I am at ebgames and see double agent on used on sale for $20. Holy cow, It costs less, looks better and works better, and this is the critical part, is more fun on the xbox.

Moral of the story, I have a half generation old video card (that is not dx 10 complaint btw). It works amazing on games that are more than a year old, but the latest offerings… it works so so. At the same time I havent purchased a single game for my pc since my xbox. I look at them on the shelf and say, I wonder if there is an xbox version?

At the same time, this computer would absolutly rule at something like WOW. A WOW player would find this computer to be WOW nirvana. But then so would an iMac(running either Vista or OSX).

I don’t think the gaming scene and MMORPG scene are the same thing. When I play a game it is to have fun an get away from the stress of life. For that goal, a little bit of time playing crack down jumping around the city beating up bad guys suits the bill perfectly.

Judging from the people I know who are in guilds and play WOW, it is not about having fun, something else is going on there which I can’t explain.
