PROSSER, Wash. – Turns out, even beheaded rattlesnakes can be dangerous. That’s what 53-year-old Danny Anderson learned as he was feeding his horses Monday night, when a 5-foot rattler slithered onto his central Washington property, about 50 miles southeast of Yakima.
Anderson and his 27-year-old son, Benjamin, pinned the snake with an irrigation pipe and cut off its head with a shovel. A few more strikes to the head left it sitting under a pickup truck. “When I reached down to pick up the head, it raised around and did a backflip almost, and bit my finger,” Anderson said. “I had to shake my hand real hard to get it to let loose.”
His wife insisted they go to the hospital, and by the time they arrived at Prosser Memorial Hospital 10 minutes later, Anderson’s tongue was swollen and the venom was spreading. He then was taken by ambulance 30 miles to a Richland hospital to get the full series of six shots he needed.
When it comes to rattlesnakes, you have to be very careful. Check out this article on Snope. Dead rattlesnakes biting people is not all that uncommon. |
Hilarious!
And what exactly did the snake do to earn the death penalty? Trespassing? I think the guy didn’t even get what he deserved.
who does this guy think he is? crocodile dumbdee?
Evolution at hand.
It amazes me what passes for news these days. Supposedly it’s common knowledge. Please DO NOT touch a snakes head for at least one hour. Snake heads have been documented as capable of biting and injecting poison an hour or more after decapitation.
So why is this news; because, it’s news to the moderator and it’s sensational. I wouldn’t mind it, if it was reasonably educational.
Without using Nonames sarcasm, I will say that it is pretty much common knowledge here in the Southwest that you don’t mess with the snakes head for a long time after killing it.
We have a no kill policy at the ranch and farm…..if at all possible we remove them to the open desert. My Mom does not adhere to this policy….she says if it’s stupid enough to scare the crap out of her when she’s in the garden, it’s life is in her hands, and she’s an excellent shot.
#7 – joshua – … she’s an excellent shot.
She sure is…
The picture on Cage Match for the same article is pretty darned funny. And there’s nothing like having your grandfather gunning down a water moccasin that’s 10 feet from you while you’re swimming in a creek!

Jägermeister,
Did you think the granny in that video looks like Dick Cheney?!?
#11 – ethanol
I didn’t think about that, but now that you mention it… yes, it looks like Dick Cheney in drag… 😀
#8, Jägermeister, my Grandma used a shotgun and could darned near outshoot me! Nobody messed with her, either!! She lived to be almost 100. Come to think of it, she may be the reason I’m so cranky…
#8….lol…yep…thats Mom in about 20 years.
Why did he reach for the head anyway?
I thought that was a cool article. The fact is 80% of the people who have been bitten by rattlers are drunk. Rattlesnakes don’t really mess with you unless you mess with them. Some people step on them and get bit, however this dude thought he had to get rid of the rattler when he should have left it be. The best way to get rid of snakes is to get rid of the places they like to hide and then they will seek out alternative living spaces. What this guy did was pretty foolish.
when I was a kid (growing up in Nevada) there was a school outing and week long special study course called “surviving in the wilderness” (we were surrounded by high desert, sagebrush, and rattlesnakes). I guess they presumed that one of us would become lost, eventually.
It was like a worst case scenario thing, and very, very impressive for an 8 year old. The one thing that stands out was t he whole thing about rattlesnakes. They can be run over, flattened like pancake (tire marks) and dead by an hour, and still bite you. So, in short, don’t play with rattlesnakes — dead or alive. They ARE shy creatures, though. They don’t want to bite, they want to run away (er, slither) and hide. Some are more excitable, some are calm. As all snakes there are “personalities” that vary among them. Babies are the worst as you can’t hear their rattle (not developed yet) and the venom is more potent.
Too bad schools don’t teach the things kids need to know when they are still interested in learning. Would have done these bozo’s a world of good. Ahh, well, schools are just to bore the kids and make them learn that rules cannot be broken, now. And, to give the parents a free child care system so they can work. A shame.
seriously….rattlesnakes are deadly…if one was on my property i’d kill it too. i mean hello, could kill his horses, himself, family, children! people and snakes dont coincide with one another, so something has to be done. yeah poor snakey, whatever.
uh…hello…how f(*&^%^ stupid is this guy???He of all people should have known better since he lives in rattlesnake country…Even I know better than to touch the head of a freshly killed rattler….and I grew up in Washington D.C. suburbs…I remember that they specifically told us in school that when you kill a poisonous snake…you cut off the head and tail…then bury or burn it…of course you don’t touch it since the muscles may still be alive and it could be a reflex action…you push it in the fire with your shovel…cmon..is this guy really this stupid???….Hmmmm..can we say probable candidate for the Darwin award??….
For me naturally i hate snakes with passion and sometimes i even wonder why snakes were even create but you can’t question God bc he knows more, but sometimes i just wish that all the snakes in the world should be killed for safety reason.
