More than 190,000 AK-47 assault rifles and pistols distributed to Iraqi forces by the US are missing, feared fallen into the hands of insurgents, a congressional watchdog warned.

The highest previous estimate of missing weapons was 14,000. A new report from the government accountability office (GAO), however, said US military officials did not know what had happened to 30% of the weapons the US had given to Iraqi forces since 2004.

Although it is the state department that usually operates security assistance programmes, the Pentagon is managing the equipment programme for Iraqi forces.

The defence department said the change allowed for more flexibility. But as of last month, it was unable to tell the GAO which accountability procedures, if any, applied to arms distributed to Iraqi forces.

Isn’t it a bit naive to rely on the Bush Administration for accountability in any aspect of their governance?

  1. Jägermeister says:

Or perhaps they’ve been bought by an arms dealer

  2. moss says:

#1 – I checked your link. 1st quote to catch the eye, “The plot synopsis is empty”.

So was the plot. I believe that’s why I only made it halfway through the flick, the other week, Even in HiDef.

  3. Dallas says:

Time to order a new batch of AK47’s from Russia.

    Place orders here:

  4. Misanthropic Scott says:

Perhaps U.S. planted them in the desert and is watering them regularly hoping that they”ll grow into WMDs to justify the damn war.

  5. Angel H. Wong says:

It makes me wonder if the Pentagon is going to charge the American troops for that mistake too.

  6. RTaylor says:

The Russians would love to have these arms destroyed. Between them and China giving the things away, they now have few markets for their weapons. Russia makes some excellent combat arms, but can’t sell the things.

  7. grog says:

so what? just send some more — apparently america is just made of money to be given away to anyone connected to the white house cabal

ah yes, i remember dick cheney on the news in those halcyon pre-iraq-war days telling the interviewer that the invasion would be cheap, that the iraqis would welcome us as liberators and that the whole thing would pay for itself with oil revenues.

his exact words were “we can afford this war”

4 years, thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars later, i sure wish he had and been anywhere close to being right on any of those accounts

    what a mess

  8. Browning says:

Guns are the most prized possession in that part of the world. More important than cars, homes, or other ‘stuff’…

If you’re seen with a gun there, you’re a target for armed robbery – not for your money, but for your gun.

“Gee, Wally, all these people are shooting at us!”

“Yah, Beave, because we gave them guns…”

Some people have the stupidest children…

  9. Sounds The Alarm says:

Lil’Cheney has them all and he’s killing children as we speak with lil’Jeb, lil’Condi, lil’Rummy & the littlest of them all microscopic’Bush.

  10. Misanthropic Scott says:

    #8 – Browning,

Simple way to avoid having stupid children: vasectomy. I’ll never look at my kids and shake my head. And, my kids will never have to deal with the problems created by wackos with guns here or there (or wackos just breeding out of control for that matter).

  11. Raff says:

Thats about 260 guns lost a day or one every six minutes for 2004 and 2005..

Wouldn’t it have been cool to take all the money spent on the Iraq war and use it for public heath care instead?

  12. snharden says:

Forget the weapons that are missing, what about all the Iraqi figher planes the Iraqi air force had. There were over 800 of them and they mysteriously vanished before the US ever landed there. I wonder what fundamentalist group is sitting on those waiting for a opportune time to launch an attack somewhere. Also what about the 3 747 decommissioned passenger jets that mysteriously vanished in desert of Africa a few years back. You can bet these morons hell bent on jihad are assembling quite a nice collection of toys to play with.

None of these stories were ever picked up by the mainstream press and most recieved only a mention elsewhere. Folks there is something going on and what ever it is 9/11 will look like a picnic in the park on a sunday afternoon. Oh and don’t forget the 150 or so small suitcase nukes that also vanished in Russia some years back as well.

And lets not forget when the US was overthrowing Baghdad the jihadi’s were in the desert burying tons of Iraqi military hardware and every bit of it was covered up by the gov, thats right! Good ol Uncle Sam. And if you think they know where it is, Guess What? They haven’t got a clue. It could be right under their nose and they;d never know!

For the life of me I can’t understand no matter how hard I try how so few can lie to so many and get away with it time after time after time. Over and over and over. I’m just baffled by it all and no one says a word about it. It just blows me away!

  13. doug says:

I propose that treason against the United States be redefined to include gross incompetence of the sort involved in the conduct of this war.

We can call it the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld Amendment.

  14. Jägermeister says:

#12 – snharden – Forget the weapons that are missing, what about all the Iraqi figher planes the Iraqi air force had. There were over 800 of them and they mysteriously vanished before the US ever landed there.

Here’s one Iraqi MIG… From the text below:

What military search teams eventually found at al Taqqadum, in July 2003, were remnants of the Iraqi Air Force as pictured above: a reported 30 to 40 planes, including several MiG-25 and Su-25 ground attack jets, buried more than 10 feet beneath tons of soil and covered with camouflage netting.

And that took me less than minute of Googling.

  15. ECA says:

    190,000 Guns??
    HOW big is this force??

Where are the checks, to make SURE these folks KEEP their GUNS…CLEAn these guns, MAINTAIN these weapons???

  16. Deployed soldier says:

Ok im in Iraq right now and What I see is We supply The IA and IP with weapons, radios, ammo, Armor, and Chevy trucks out the yin jang. The problem is when they get stuff from us the checkpoint or IP station mysteriously gets attacked and overran. There are no casualties to speak of but all the equipment is gone. Blame bush if you want.

  17. snharden says:

    #14 Jägermeister

30 to 40 planes……..That leaves several hundred unaccounted for….I’m aware of the article you site….I can google too…

  18. Awake says:

Those are just the missing guns.
Don’t forget that we are also intentionally arming all three sides so they can ‘defend themselves’ against each other.
Those weapons don’t count as ‘lost’ because we actually put them into the hands of militias intentionally.
But all is not lost, since according to the White House, the ‘surge’ is working just fine. There was less US soldiers killed last month than the previous month. Too bad they conveniently forget to tell you the full story:
    US casualties:
    July 2003: 48
    July 2004: 54
    July 2005: 54
    July 2006: 43
    July 2007: 80

And to think that there are reasonably intelligent people that still believe ANY of the malarkey that is presented by our now utterly contemptible presidency.
