They’re likely to want a large landscape screen

Google Inc has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in its cell phone project and is courting U.S. and European mobile operators, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Anian, a Reuters company that tracks industry trends for institutional investors, reported last month that Google had engaged Taiwan’s High Tech Computer Corp to design a Linux software-based phone for launch in the first quarter of 2008.

The Anian report cited industry sources as saying T-Mobile, owned by Deutsche Telekom, would likely be Google’s U.S. partner with France Telecom’s Orange selling the phones in other markets.

The most interesting aspect is – like Apple – here’s another company coming from the world of computing – challenging the citadel of dog-in-the-manger corporate stodgery, the Telcos.

Could be entertaining. Maybe even benefit a few ordinary human beings.

Are they really challenging the Telcos? I thought they were making a mobile phone… and thereby challenge the mobile phone manufacturers.

As for Google expanding its tentacles… no thanks. No Google phone for me. I just don’t trust their motto anymore.

Phone mfg and Telcos are about as distinct from each other as were, say, AT&T and Western Electric.

bah… imo…this is just a big cover to have a phone number/address database to correlate with all of google’s search and gmail information which will no doubt become the most sought after database in marketing history…

-and i’m sure few other “peoples” will want to access to that db too…

    food for thought..

    Ok,
I, and a few others have chatted with a person or 2 on development of Cellphone, on a Site I visit…
first thing we ALL wanted was a DECENT phone…
    then we discussed adding Modules.
It would be Cool to add Options, AS you wanted them, WHEN you needed them…
.3mb quick cam, or a 3mb Better cam.
Internet, Slot a card that works for the system you are ON, or slot a card to use your OWN INTERNET, rather then ATT,Vorizen, WHOMEVER…
Want BT?? Add a card…BT changes, GET a NEW card.
    Storage, FINE add MORE.
Adding a PDA/mini comp would have its OWN battery source, and integrate into the phone…
Cant send Wifi to a friend, CHANGE the wifi to match..
the modules are so small, that you could add 90% of them and still have something reasonable in size, BUT still afford a PHONE.

The more interesting aspect of this story is that Google is bidding on a new wireless spectrum being auctioned off by the FCC. Chances are the phone is an extension of that move.

It’s going to be interesting to see how extensible Google makes the software, since it’s a software company (unlike Apple).

It matters not to Apple, chances are that they will seize the moment and continue brainwash consumers with their “Our iPhones are expensive because they are luxury items” campaign, what better way to do it that to demean Google’s phone as a cheap item if you can’t afford an iPhone.

    It’s that plain and simple.

I got a samsung phone. have always had samsung phones. Never had a single problem with any of them

Everyone I know that has any motorola phone has had problems with it (except for the StarTAC devices, made in the late 1990’s). I used to have to support them so I know.

    Moto phones suck hard.

My family has three Motorola Razrs. Never had the slightest problem with any of them. Had ’em for over two years.

#8: Agreed: Samsung good, Moto not so good. Not real impressed with Noikia either, considering my mother in law’s not so good experience with one that she used rarely as an emergency phone.
