The Daily Show reports on the latest developments of Alberto Gonzales’ House Judiciary testimony.

    THIS

    IS

    PRICELESS

    LOL

  2. so you get your news from a comidy show?

  3. hhopper says:

That was funny as hell but also pitiful. Gonzales is a certified idiot.

  4. bobbo says:

2–What was the most incorrect piece of information one would get from watching that video on that comidy show?

    ——————I’ll wait.

  5. BubbaRay says:

“What keeps you in this job, Mr Attorney General?”
Gonzales: “That’s a very good question, Senator”

Oh, Good Grief, Charlie Brown!! Hop, where are you keeping that Ultimate King Kahuna Moran award? This is an opportunity that should not be missed!! 😮

  6. Kevin says:

This is all deep politics and a waste of taxpayer time. What possible productive use will ever come of this whole process?

  7. Elwood Pleebus says:

    funny!

but somehow sad. Congress must be a real mindfvck.

  8. Awake says:

This is exactly what happens when you use the “buddy system” to put people in charge of things in a company, instead of putting the best interests of the company ahead of your party buddies.

In this case the company just happens to be America.

    Bush Government motto:
“Friends first, Political Party second, America a far behind third.”

Maybe it’s really the truth that these people can not recall many facts… with so many “talking points”, lies and diversions to memorize, there is little room left for the truth in their heads anymore.

  9. Mister Mustard says:

The drill sargeant is right; the best part of him DID run down the crack of his momma’s ass and end up as a brown stain. But that pretty much applies to the whole “administration”, so at least he’s in good company.

  10. rasco says:

    Funny!

I haven’t laughed like that since last night when Stewart said one of the Tour de France riders was kicked off the tour for smuggling plumbs in his shorts (you had to see the image of the guy with odd-shaped bulges).

This show is one of the funniest shows out there. It’s too bad that this is also one of the best news shows.

I’m glad I can laugh at all of this; it’s getting ugly.

  11. hhopper says:

Telling lies all the time is tough. You have to remember all of them. That’s why he “doesn’t recall”. He’s afraid of getting caught in one of the hundreds (thousands?) of lies.

BubbaRay – The Ultimate King Kahuna Moron Award is reserved for DU commenters.

  12. Guyver says:

You gotta love Stewart’s commentary. Hilarious.

But I have to ask, why is Bush firing 8 attorney generals more newsworthy than Clinton firing 93? And on top of that , Awake correctly points out that attorney general appointments are given at the leisure of the president (aka buddy system).

  13. Dauragon88 says:

Back in 04′ my english teacher told us to write a single comment about what we felt of Bush’s re-election. Everyone’s reactions were pretty much “It sucks” “It’s sad that the country would vote for him again”,

Mine however, was “Hey! look at the bright side, this means four more years of the Daily Show being HILARIOUS!”

I don’t live in the us but even I know that a new president routinely sacks all attorney generals when they get in to office, thats what happened in 93.

This gonzo thing is different because these guys were sacked at a odd time, no substantive reasons can be given and the mounting evidence points to political non-compliance with stuff that was in the interest of the white house and republicans.

I actually think you know that, and don’t need someone from the UK to lecture you in us domestic politics. But you have to comeback with a feeble “Clinton did it” counter argument because that is the best/only defense you can find in the bottom of this barrel full of republican pus

You fail to see the whole story.
Making a mass replacement of ALL employees during an administration change is very, very different from changing just a few employees for personal benefit. Mass changes are often done to bring new blood into a system, to rejuvenate and revitalize a system, and often result in more balanced operations than the system that it is replacing… as long as qualified people are placed in those positions. Nobody ever complained that the changes that Clinton did were purely politically motivated, and nobody ever complained about the change resulting in a biased system. In fact, is was very well balanced and performed very well.
You say “attorney general appointments are given at the leisure of the president” to justify the “buddy system”, but that does not mean that the president can hire and fire those employees for pure political or personal gain. Once an attorney is appointed, he is expected to be completely impartial and blind to political affiliation, enforcing the law as required by his position.

What Bush has done with the attorney general in this case can be compared to the following scenario:
Imagine you have a Mafia Don that becomes mayor of a city. That Mafia Don then appoints his personal ‘consiglieri’ as chief of police. The chief of police then refuses to investigate any actions on the part of the Mayor, just because the mayor says he should not do so. At that point if is up to the city council to have the chief of police replaced.
That is what we have here: The president has appointed his personal lawyer as chief of police, and told him not to interfere with ANYTHING he does, regardless of what the law or ethics or anything else says is correct. The Attorney General continues to be Bush’s personal lawyer, while refusing to act independently in the position to which he has been appointed. We need an Attorney General that behaves with honor in the position he has been appointed, instead of just continuing to do the bidding of a man that he is supposed to oversee and prosecute if necessary.

  16. Mister Mustard says:

    >>But I have to ask, why is Bush firing 8 attorney generals
    >>more newsworthy than Clinton firing 93?

Uh, how about this? Clinton “fired” 93 at the beginning of his term, because he wanted to (as is his right) replace the entire squad of AGs with people of his own picking. Many of the 93 would have been ardent supporters of his administration; many would not have been. There was no secret political agenda.

Dumby, on the other hand, waited until half-way through his second term, and then dumped the ones who didn’t have their tongues up the administration’s ass. You know, they were prosecuting Republican criminals (gasp!) or failing to bring hoked-up phony cases against Democrats (the horror! the horror!). And then he got his intellectually challenged Attorney General to go before Congress and lie about what went on, who knew what, and when they knew it. If ‘berto had just said “yeah, Dumbya wanted to get rid of the fuckers because they weren’t doing what we told them to do”, he’d be back in his office spying on Americans as we speak. Instead, this excruciating effort to extract the truth from that lilly-livered liar is going to go on for the next 16 months, and then he’ll be gone. Just like Dumbya. And just like the Republican party.

  19. joshua says:

Just to clarify….not use as an excuse…..what Clinton did in *93* was unprecedented…..no incoming President had ever done that before.
But, the job is one of those political plums that Presidents can hand out to loyal folks, always has been, though it may not always be, thanks to this bullshit. Presidents usually fire several(or the Attorny General does it for him) during a term….and if they hadn’t tried to act guilty of something and started lying, then the Democrats could howl *foul* until the cows come home and no one other than those in Washington would have cared. But the Bumbling Bushies, who seem more and more to not know how to do ANYTHING according to the law or precedent, decided to try and *cover up* something that didn’t need to be covered up.

It simply continues to amaze me that people this incompetent are believed to have some grand conspirosy in the works to *take over* America.

By the way….how many members of Congress, Republican members especially, have been indicted, and found guilty and gone to jail in the last 6 years??? A lot, and only 1 Democrat has been indicted for corruption….it kind of makes the arguement that the Justice Department is NOT doing it’s job because it’s run by the Republicans a little hard to make dosen’t it? Think about it….they are accused of firing Federal proscutors for going after Republicans yet….DeLay, Ney, Cunningham, Doolittle, Plambo, 2 more in Penna., and a couple from the New England states plus others that I can’t even remember anymore, have all been indicted, or found guilty of various charges of corruption, fraud and other offenses by this so-called *biased* Justice Department.
I don’t know about you, but it seems like it’s doing it’s job to me. If anything makes me suspicious, it’s the fact that only 1 Democrat has been found to be corrupt……sorry, but that just isn’t possible…..it’s part of the Democratic Party oath to be corrupt in office, always has been. 🙂

Not really. The Republicans are so much more shameless, so much more inept, and so sure that Charlie McCarthy Gonzalez won’t dare to send his minions after them (lest they be fired, like The Nine), that they go beyond even what corrupt, immoral, and degenerate right-wingers are willing to allow happen in public.

If there had been a Fair And Balanced(r) prosecution program in place, maybe 2 Dems would have gone to jail, and about 200 Republicans.

If you want immoral, illegal, and unethical, join the Republican party. Too bad that after Dumbya’s 8 years of infamy, it will probably be about 100 years before they’ll have any significant political power again.

And so it was, a valiant Michael P. O’Connor saved the day for conservatives across the United States as he keenly swept in for his well-planned attack on liberals! Yes, the world was never the same after he completely demolished the opposing forces after pointing out the obvious: the Daily Show is a comidy (sic) show!

The damage done, the heroic Michael P. O’Connor quietly slinked back into the hole from which he came, smugly aware of his stunning intellectual massacre of the opposing forces. Will this be the last appearance of “MOM!-MOM!-look-at-me-i’m-so-clever!” man?

    Stay tuned!

  23. Mr. Fusion says:

    #21, joshua,

    Posting incorrect information again.

Delay, indicted by a Democrat DA in Texas.

Bob Ney, caught up in the Ohio Republican Governor’s corruption. Pleaded guilty to Abramoff connection. If it hadn’t been for Taft, it is possible nothing would have come out of Ney’s wrong doings.

Cunningham, Pleaded guilty to bribery. US Attorney later fired.

John Doolittle, accused in the media, no charges.

I didn’t find anything about Plambo. Did you mean Richard Pombo? Geeze, he hasn’t been charged with anything either. Accused in the media though.

And other unidentified people make it really hard to check out the facts. But, what are facts to Bush apologists. Just make up the bullcrap and claim it is true.

When was the last a President *didn’t* put his buddies in charge? Unfortunately, in the party system, you elect the schmo and all the baggage of their party specifically because of the buddy system.

Now, I can’t argue that Gonzales is a loser cause he is. But my impression is that he *fractionally* less of a loser than Ashcroft who was on par with Reno. Granted, this is like arguing that one pile of crap is slightly less stinky than another pile of crap.

  25. Mr. Fusion says:

    # 26, Thomas,

While Reno wasn’t the most gifted AG of all time; compared to Bush’s two AGs, she is. While still finding the executive washroom, she took responsibility for Waco. Her people also prosecuted Oklahoma City and WTC I. She was fair and consistant in her administration.

Ashcroft lost his Senate seat to a dead guy. He draped the “Blind Justice” statue because she had a bare breast. He held prayer meetings every day at the Justice Department. He started the dismantlement of the Civil Rights Division in the Justice Department. He oversaw the detainment of thousands of people on Material Witness warrants because they were Muslims. But at least Ashcroft understood the damage Bush was doing and bailed.

Gonzalas is just a lying twerp. Impeach the bastard and disbar him.

  26. joshua says:

#23…Mister Mustard…The Republicans have had control for 12 years, and have had a bunch of scandels…..before that the Democrats had control for 43 years and had several bunch’s of scandals. Neither party is going to be up for sainthood anytime soon. If you look back, it becomes apparent that the key is control, whichever party has it, commits the most scandaless behavior. So, if the Democrats hold control after 2008(maybe likely) I hope your ready to scream bloody murder when they start getting popped for corruption.

#25…Fusion…Ney was indicited for his money taking from Abramoff, not for anything to do with Taft.
Cunningham was indited and found guilty….
Doolittle is now under full investigation by the Justice Department. Pombo is also under investigation for illegal vacations on the tax payers dime.
Former Congressman Weldon of Penna. is under investigation for possibly helping his daughter with illegal lobbying while in office. DeLay was indicted by the local D.A., but found his position untenable when the Justice Department indicted and put in prison his chief of Staff and was probing DeLay himself. Senator Conrad Burns was being looked at by the FBI for Abramoff money going to him. He lost his seat because of the investigation, which is ongoing I think.

Most people in the Justice Department are good, honest people, who try hard to do their jobs fairly and honestly. Even when the leaders are idiots or near idiots. From what I can read on the 9 fired FP….a couple went because they refused to investigate or move faster in investigations of Democrats. While thats a screwed up reason to fire them, it’s not illegal.

  27. joshua says:

#27…Fusion….The least you could do is give a warning when your going to vomit up such a load of horsesh*t.
When the AG’s of the last 100 years are ranked according to their abilities, the only thing that will keep Janet Reno from the bottom of the list will be Alberto Gonzales.

I will agree about her taking the rap for Waco, when she had only just got the job and her boss dumped the crap on her to protect himself.

  28. Mister Mustard says:

    >>If you look back, it becomes apparent that the key is control,
    >>whichever party has it, commits the most scandaless
    >>behavior.

Not exactly, Joshua Tree. The dems’ “scandals” generally revolve around misbehaviour like putting a Cuba cigar someplace Fidel never intended, or doing the hokey-pokey with Marilyn Monroe. The repubs’ malfeasance is more like treason, selling out the country for the sake of the Halliburton stock portfolio, starting a misbe-fucking-gotten war so that Dumbya can work out his Daddy Issues.

One constant in the Republican party over the past 40 years has been that they’ll do just about anything for financial gain, and if they get to fuck over some poor people (or immigrants, gays, or Democrats, or anybody who’s not in their Fat RIch White Guys’ Club), that’s just icing on the cake.

If you want to talk sex scandals, why is it that the holiest-rolling, most Bible-thumping, family-values proselytizing right-wing neocons always seem to be the ones who get caught trying to blow some guy in the crapper, taking it up the kiester from a crystal meth fiend, or on some brothel’s list of freqenty shoppers? Hmmmm?

    Can I get a HALLELUJAH??!???!

  29. MikeN says:

All the incompetence from the attorney general, and that was all the Daily Show could come up with? What he said about the attorney firings made sense. Democrats have messed up. They don’t have the guts to go after impeachment, and instead pick on Alberto. They could just play up incompetence with the Attorney General being on the front lines, instead they try to make a criminal case that doesn’t exist. Now even Arlen Specter is backing off, and he’ll probably start fighting on Gonzales’ behalf the way the liberals are operating. There was no perjury, despite Sen. Schumer’s best efforts to create it.

  30. Smartalix says:

    Joshua,

If I told you I despise what the Dems have done in the past with their power would you acknowledge that this administration is terribly abusing theirs?

Gonzales, Bush, and Cheney all need to go to jail.
