Quite a sad event in the development of a space program by the private sector. We have previously featured Rutan in this post, explaining the development of a civilian space program.

Blast at desert spaceport kills 3 – CNN.com: A third person died Friday from an explosion at a rocket test pad operated by a private company in California’s southern Mojave Desert, according to the nursing supervisor at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.
The explosion, which occurred Thursday at the Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California, initially killed two people and critically injured four others

The six were employed by Scaled Composites, an aerospace development company founded 25 years ago by Burt Rutan, the aerospace engineer who designed the first plane to fly nonstop around the world without refueling.
According to Rutan, the blast occurred during a test involving nitrous oxide flowing through fuel injectors. A source said the workers were testing components of a new rocket motor for SpaceShipTwo, which is a spaceship being built for Virgin Galactic, Richard Branson’s space tourism company.

  1. BertDawg says:

Sad indeed. Rutan is one of my heroes and the last post about him brought out the worst in me in response to what in retrospect was a witty observation about him. Rutan (and those who work with him) is a visionary and we need all of those we can get.

  2. undissembled says:

All the Rutan haters will forget all of the problems NASA had when it was getting started.

  3. bobbo says:

Who in the world hates Rutan?

Jealousy is not nice, but it isn’t hate.

  4. Improbus says:

Sad to hear. I wish them better luck in the future.

  5. Nth of the 49th says:

Sad to hear about the workers. Hopefully this won’t stall them too long.
As someone who has experienced co-worker deaths I hope they get back at it after a suitable period, it’s what we did. We lost 9 people in one instance.

  6. Angel H. Wong says:

These kind of accidents will always happen, didn’t one of the Wright brothers died in a flight accident too?

I can’t wait for the relatives of these unfortunate individuals to sue Virgin for a hefty sum.

  7. Matthew says:

Isn’t this exactly the type of event that made NASA the lumbering bureaucracy of safety and inefficiency it is today.

  8. Atomic Bitchwax says:

Who in the world hates Rutan?

I hate his sideburns. They look RIDICULOUS.

  9. BubbaRay says:

#12, Pedro, Oh, OK no problem, but I hope you enjoyed the Buran and other links!
