Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive

Could this be a reaction to all the announcements from the Blu-ray camp or something related to the high level of defects of the Xbox 360 consoles?

Microsoft Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Drops to $179 – Daily Tech: Microsoft introduced its HD DVD player for the Xbox 360 last November for a price of $199 USD. The Xbox 360 launched without a high definition disc player, so the USB-based HD DVD add-on gave Microsoft the additional firepower necessary to combat the PlayStation 3’s standard Blu-ray disc drive.

Effective August 1, the HD DVD add-on will retail for $179 USD. In addition, customers who purchase the peripheral between August and September 30 will also qualify to receive five free HD DVD movies.

A US$20 reduction doesn’t seem much, but the five free HD-DVD movies make this offer seem more attractive.

I’d be WAY more impressed if they dropped the price on the HDD addons to something within reason.

  2. ECA says:

And watching bruce lee, for the 1000th time in HD isnt what I want to see

  3. edwinrogers says:

Does anyone know whether this USB based HD DVD drive works on PCs?

  4. undissembled says:

yes it works.. with the proper software and a POWERFUL pc.

  5. Phil says:

I wonder how the movies will be given out. When they started offering the PS3 with five free blu-ray movies it really got me interested. However, it was a list of a dozen or so to choose from, most of which I already had or didn’t want.

Also, it has been bundles with King Kong. If that continues you’re getting six movies. at roughly $20 each you’re only paying $59 for the HD-DVD add-on. But then you just paid $400 plus on the console that has a decent chance to be a brick right out of the box.

  6. James Hill says:

…and the mainstream yawns. While the console price drops are interesting, as a whole this doesn’t impact the majority of technology buyers.

When the next generation iPods get more attention than HD-DVD/BluRay this holiday season, what are you going to do?

  7. ECA says:

I wonder at the USB connection….
Its only good for 400mbits…And I thought TRUE 1080 was Larger then that..
    Please,
    remember on a PC….
With a KB, Mouse, printer, Scanner, and all this OTHER STUFF on the USB port…..anything that take MAJOR bandwidth, will not work to well with other items fighting for contention.
