Congressman Denied Access To Post-Attack Continuity Plans

Constituents called Rep. Peter DeFazio’s office, worried there was a conspiracy buried in the classified portion of a White House plan for operating the government after a terrorist attack.

As a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, DeFazio, D-Ore., is permitted to enter a secure “bubbleroom” in the Capitol and examine classified material. So he asked the White House to see the secret documents.

On Wednesday, DeFazio got his answer: DENIED.

“I just can’t believe they’re going to deny a member of Congress the right of reviewing how they plan to conduct the government of the United States after a significant terrorist attack,” DeFazio said.

Now, add in this latest, delightful development. As you’re reading it, don’t forget Bush’s opinion of the Constitution.

Bush Executive Order: Criminalizing the Antiwar Movement

The Executive Order entitled “Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq” provides the President with the authority to confiscate the assets of whoever opposes the US led war.

A presidential Executive Order issued on July 17th, repeals with the stroke of a pen the right to dissent and to oppose the Pentagon’s military agenda in Iraq.

The Executive Order entitled “Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq” provides the President with the authority to confiscate the assets of “certain persons” who oppose the US led war in Iraq:

“I have issued an Executive Order blocking property of persons determined to have committed, or to pose a significant risk of committing, an act or acts of violence that have the purpose or effect of threatening the peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of Iraq or undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people.”

In substance, under this executive order, opposing the war becomes an illegal act.

Are these items just preventative steps gearing up for what this Ron Paul fansite outlines may be coming? I especially like the Eisenhower quote about preventative war under Paul’s picture.

Will this be one of you 15 years in the future: “I know you won’t believe this, children, but there was once was a time when we were a free country. I’ll deny saying that, of course, if you tell anyone.”

  1. JPV says:

I believe that nothing will happen ’till about this time next year. There “next step” will need to happen closer to the elections, so that they can better justify suspending them.

  2. Smartalix says:

We need to impeach Bush NOW.

  3. Ibee Wrong says:

In the event / when of a terrats attack, real or ?
congress gets dismissed, call ya back when ‘its’ over, heh
an we’ll have a dictator dubyah for life,

an it’s too late to stop them.

  4. gquaglia says:

Maybe he was denied because they felt he would somehow leak the info to the press in an attempt to discredit the administration. Its not like that is beyond any sleazy politician to do so.

  5. Ron K says:

Everything this administration does is self serving, whet ever happen to for the people by the people?
One way or another all need to demand that our leaders start following the will of the people.
We are the ones who pay and employ the losers, and I don’t know where you work but they would be in jail or the welfair line if they worked anywhere I have.

Well if they are moving the Enterprise in position to pull a Gulf of Tonkin maneuver and it goes down.

Presto every geek in the world is on their side.

  7. malren says:

2008 elections cannot come fast enough. Then we can laugh our asses off at these…”interesting people”…who swore a dictatorship was coming under GWB.

#2: Impeach away, if you want to guarantee a Republican victory in 2008. You have no idea how much the right welcomes the idea of the 16% approval rating Democrat-led Congress trying.

  8. noname says:

It’s really unfortunate that pictures of tortured “enemy combatants” (what ever that means) will probably be hanging in the Louvre and other museums around the world for decades to come.

Gone are the days of America being represented by the statue of liberty and of justice.

I guess when people believe in theory and stories more then the practice and the facts, this is what you get, a Bush Dynasty.

I guess, dumb as America is we are likely to vote in a Clinton Dynasty.

  9. RSweeney says:

I guess this means I don’t have to pay my New York Times subscription any more.

  10. Higghawker says:

What makes me nervous about the White House arrogance is when we elect somebody else. Will they pick up where these idiots left off? With no checks and balances we don’t need Congress and have a dictatorship.

  11. I read the entire PNAC report and did not come away with Ron Paul’s nutball interpretation.

  12. ECA says:

    OK,
    any Lawyers out there??
I want to know if, after taking our RIGHTS away, if we have to pay TAXES for this?
I think its time to pull the Plug on these folks…NO MORE TAXES…Take AWAY their wages…

  13. malren says:

What makes me nervous about the White House arrogance is when we elect somebody else.

That’s one of the reason I fear Giuliani. He’s a big fan of authoritarianism. Sure, we need a person with a strong will in that role, but the more I research his SPECIFIC policies in NYC, the more I worry. Thanks to Bush’s executive power consolidation, the next President will have an awfully large amount of federal power.

I want to elect a candidate that tells me all the things he ISN’T going to do, but isn’t batshit crazy (*cough*ronpaul*cough*).

  14. Mr. Fusion says:

Relax people, relax. There ain’t gunna be any takeover by Cheney or his White House. They don’t have the support of the Generals in the Pentagon or the troops in the field. The National Guard units won’t respond either. Local law enforcement won’t back him. So how the hell would they take over? There would be too many people willing to take up arms against them.

Americans know just how slimey and despicable Cheney and Bush are. I can’t envision anyone supporting them. Right after 9/11 the President’s approval ratings reached 89%. I suspect that 80% of that was for the office and 9% was actually for the man. If his approval stands at 29% today, that is still only 20% for the office and 9% for the man.

  15. Mr. Fusion says:

    Malren.
We know Congress’s approval is even lower then the President. That is why impeachment would be in the best interest of the Democrats. It is the low opinion of the Republicans in Congress that bring down the entire institution’s approval. Currently nothing is being accomplished because of stone walling by Senate Republicans. Many of whom will not be Senators in another 18 months.

Impeach now. For the good of the country.

  16. neozeed says:

Well I’ll see you all in the REX84 Camps… With any luck the ‘food’ will be brought to us from Wal*Mart, loveingly tainted from China.

  17. ECA says:

2, bush should have been done with 6 years ago.

    5. yes and this country has been doing it for the better part of ?20 years?

    7. a few things…
I want all Votes counted. If 100 persons VOTED, and 20 voted for 1 person and 0 voted for the Other, that still leave 80 Against BOTH.
I want ALL states to run 1 person for pres… Then a regional/group voting to get the number down to 5…then let the people decide.

  18. Mister Mustard says:

    >>Maybe he was denied because they felt he would somehow
    >>leak the info to the press in an attempt to discredit the
    >>administration.

Yeah, I guess that’s why he is a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security with security clearance, eh, Einstein?

Nobody has to “do” anything to discredit the administration. They’ve spent the last seven years fine-tuning the art of discrediting themselves.

  19. Dauragon88 says:

Damn, I guess I can’t walk down the National Mall with my anti bush t-shirt anymore…………….

  20. Cinaedh says:

Jeeze, I can remember prior to 9/11 when almost everyone realized Bush was a moron and we were all laughing at him.

This is a little spooky, especially since politicians who oppose such measures in opposition rarely reverse them when they get into power themselves.

I wonder why the mainstream media hasn’t done a study on all these Executive Orders to determine where they all lead?

  21. Hey, Mr. Fusion (#14) –

‘ They don’t have the support of the Generals in the Pentagon…. ‘

They didn’t have the ‘ suport of the Generals in the Pentagon ‘ for their continuing occupation of their Iraqi Colony either, so they just changed Generals in command, more than once.

‘ There would be too many people willing to take up arms against them.’ I agree: waay too many civilians dying needlessly, as happened in Iraq and continues to happen today.

‘ Relax people, relax ‘. That’s neither good advice for rape victims nor for civilians in the Bush Kingdom.

    Allen McDonald, El Galloviejo®

  22. Mr. Fusion says:

    #21, Allen,

The difference is the Iraq War is “legal” in the sense that it is authorized. A government takeover wouldn’t be.

The threat of civilians rising up would give pause to even those who do support Cheney (and Bush).

People should relax. I don’t suggest becoming complacent, just relaxing. Getting overly excited only leads to people jumping the gun and making mistakes. A shrill scream never solved any problem.

  23. Julius Scissor says:

    gquaglia –

um dude. do you know what discredit means? it means the administration did something wrong!

  24. Molon Lave says:

When in doubt, get ready to vote from the rooftops!
