A Georgia meat processor on Saturday expanded its recall of canned meat products that may be connected to a botulism outbreak.

Castleberry’s Food Co. of Augusta recalled more than 80 types of canned chili, beef stew, corned beef hash and other meat products in addition to the 10 brands it had recalled earlier.

The Agriculture Department said the malfunctions at the Augusta processing plant may have existed longer than initially estimated.

Thanx for continuing this posting. I had one of the recalled products in my cupboard – yeesh! I’ll stick with mustard and sauerkraut from now on!

  2. JPV says:

Who the hell is minding the store at the FDA these days?

Oh, I forgot, it’s probably some Bush appointee isn’t it?

  3. A Bush appointee with no experience in anything except prayer would be my guess.

  4. Rich says:

In the backroom of my local Wally World I saw Castleberry Beef Stew, Brunswick Stew, and the hotdog topping on a cart with a sign reading “Recall”.

  5. hhopper says:

I just ate a whole can of Castleberry’s Beef Stew four days ago.

    Gulp!

  6. joshua says:

I’ve used the hot dog chili…since I’m a lousy cook and desperatly wanted a Chili Dog…..but that was a few months ago.

They keep saying that Natural and Organic food isn’t any better for you than processed……..guess **they** are full of sh*t!!!

  7. prophet says:

Someone should write a book about this situation we have here.

Oh, wait a minute! Someone already did, it is called The Jungle and was written in 1906 by some upstart named Upton Sinclair.

  8. BubbaRay says:

Chli in a can, yeah. I’ll bet Eideard could get me some fresh dried NM red chile peppers and we could make a chili that would win the TX chili cookoff. Put that on your hotdog!!

[And no, I’m not entrant #4, that guy’s a wuss (beans in chili??) and I’m really honked that he has the name Bubba] Just for some good fun:

It wouldn’t be fair to not include one of the finest chili spots in TX, I’ve visited way too many times:

  9. Cinaedh says:

This is the first time I’m just a little bit happy I’m not allowed to eat any of that crap anymore. If things keep going this way, the only people left on the planet will be heart patients.

    Go figure….

  10. Ballenger says:

Having opened a can of this stuff once (I don’t know why) and immediately tossing it in the trash based on it’s rusty contact cement appearance and it’s McDonald’s grease trap smell, I’m not extremely surprised this happened. If you start with almost any chili recipe and tried to recreate this, the only way to come close would be to buy your ingredients from Pep Boys or dive a sausage plant dumpster. Even the non-contaminated version of this product is just too nasty to put on a hot dog. And that’s saying a lot. How bad does something have to be to not measure up to hot dog standards. That’s like drain cleaner that’s just too gross to pour into a backed up toilet. This stuff makes Spam look like a dish personally prepared by Wolfgang Puck. At least the expanded recall lists lets consumers know where cousins of this foul sludge may be lurking behind other brand labels.

  11. hhopper says:

Ballenger – Why don’t you tell us how you really feel? 🙂

  12. Ballenger says:

    It just got better.

Now the list includes dog food. Nothing says quality like sharing chili and pet food ingredients. Now you and your dog can eat from the same bowl and enjoy the same great taste! But you will still have to use different emergency rooms.

and yet more reasons to go vegan.

  14. hhopper says:

    Sure, just eat spinach.

  15. Kevin says:

This does not surprise me. I interviewed for a management job about a year ago. I ran from the plant when I was done. It was dirty and smelly. I could not believe that they processed food there.

  16. Rosemarie says:

Another reason to spend my money on cookbooks and fresh foods, cooking lessons when I need them. Last year I was hopitalized for three days after eating in a restaurant and ill for about ten days.

This latest report, adding to the list of dangerous foods for human and animal consumption, prompted me to throw out most of my cans and all food not made in the USA. I may have to take up gardening as well!
